Title: Pathfinder bombing
Post by: MjTalon on February 17, 2008, 08:12:29 AM
Last night, i hosted a bomber raid into knight land on a experimental bombing raid on there strategic factories in the south, since that is were majority of the war effort was focused.

Started out calmly, i informed the mission bombardiers that we were to be doing a different type of bombing, pathfinder bombing. Needless to say it worked flawlessly, the spread of bombs destroyed more % of the factories than having each individual bomber calibrating them selfs.

I will be using this method of bombing from now on since i have experienced it's effectiveness, glad the avengers squadron did this type of raid in the AvA, otherwise i would have never known about it.

To the avengers squadron! :aok

are you refering to the WW2 technique on all bombers dropping when the lead bomber does?

been curious as to how effective that would be in AH

Just a check of terminology, but pathfinders were lone/small groups of bombers/fighter-bombers that scouted out the area ahead to mark the target for the main strike group following behind them.

What you're talking about is saturation bombing, or the historical technique used by high-altitude strategic bombing.

I can definitely see it as being effective against targets such as factories, towns and cities if you have enough guys together. Could also be effective for clearing GVs off a base, or other targets where you don't need to concentrate a large amount of ordinance against an individual structure.

I don't see it as being as effective as targeted bombing for shutting down hangars, though, unless you've got a LOT of bombers with you.

Sax has it, in COD1 the first mission is "Pathfinder", basically you land ahead of the main para drop and set up radio beacons for the main force to look for.

Actually quite fun, I tagged along as escort in P47N and though I was separated for a short time forcing some knight fighters back down, I caught up to the group at the Radar production facilities and stayed with them almost all the way back, before suffering some damage and having to leave before I lost my engine.

The close order formation made it very hard for the fighters to effectively engage and the 3 escorts left were able to knock down some of the more tenacious attackers. I do believe a 262 went down to the combined efforts of an escort and the bomber formation.

From what I observed, many of the pilots (knight) didn't really know what to do at that height (24K+-) and it may have just been me, but no one appeared to  check six their comrades, because I literally was able to fly right up to 5 separate planes (30 -22K) and rake them before there was any action taken to avoid me, since at the time I was catching back up to the bomber formation in a shallow high speed dive from 30 K.

I knocked down three confirmed and damage several more, because if they peeled off or dropped, I didn't chase, because there was just too many enemy planes around to get into a dogfight and my intent was to protect the bomber flight as much as possible.

AATalen did a very good job as flight lead and kept the ball rolling, keeping the formation together and coordinating the gunnery within the group, and the escort leads did a very good job of providing protection and keeping the fighters together.

I don't normally, get involved with missions, but in the future AATalen missions will be looked forward too.

It was a fun mission, but the travel time was a little to long for me.We flew for well over 10 sectors.

Yes sir, that's it. Sorry for getting the names mistaken :o . Quite effective if the group is in the desired flight leads positions, & if the lead has good calibration.

Yes, we did saturation bombing last night, sorry for getting the name mistaken as well. it's very effective against factories, towns. This morning, used 4 B24s loaded with 8 1,000LB of bombs, set the salvo to 8, delay .6. leveled the entire town 98% in one pass. So yes, i will continue to use this method of bombing in the near future since it's a great way of bombing, and it takes up the time of the long flight of a bomber raid.

Sax, i'll be testing it out on Gv bases swarming with gv's on the ground as well, you gave me an idea :). Will try to saturate a entire base tonight :D .

Thank you sir for the wonderful compliment :aok . I always try to keep it historical in my missions, i don't run too many capture missions but ask any rook, i throw great bomber raids.

It does work. Sometimes better than others. Depends on the enemy op, formation keeping. Although its fun to try, I prefer assigning lanes thru the target. Overall its much more efficient.

Well, I'm a knight, and I'd just like to say that was probably the best raid I've ever seen.  It was organised, efficient, effective and completely caught us off guard.

However, I did have fun upping a Spitfire Mk I from whichever field it was you guys capped/vulched, and surviving for a very long time  :D :D

Anyways, nice work whichever team you are :aok :aok

I don't know about that. 100% and DT, throttle back and lower RPM's I could get it pretty far. :D

I think I'll go to the other side next time and make a intercept mission full of 190s and 109s. :t

Honestly, I don't fly the Spit enough to know it's gas details. I do know that it flies like a rock with 100%.

hmm I fly 100% in the 16 all the time and usually land 6-10 kills a sortie. Who told you that? :)

Yeah that was fun Talen

I never looked through my bomb sight, it was kinda weird. I Just stayed about 130 yards or so off Talens right wing and dropped when he dropped.

I hit quite a few targets. It was a Loooong mission, but was something new and was a good lesson in keeping a tight formation.

good times.:aok

Talen,
You should have told us. The 11th would have kept you occupied between targets in defense of the Reich if you know what I mean. At least 4 of us were on in LWO last night IIRC.
