Title: Gun laws (lazs will like this)
Post by: Vulcan on February 17, 2008, 05:15:02 PM
A few of my friends and relatives have been freaked out somewhat in the last week. You see I brought myself a new air rifle.

This year I've got a new workmate who has some farmland (she trains horses as a side business/hobby). Now my wife has been nagging at me to get out and work off my 'personal survival ring'. I use to love hunting bunnies and the new workmate said I can go shooting on her land. I can spend hours going over hilly wild country hunting bunnies whereas a gym has no attraction to me at all.

So I decided to get a new gun (I have a low power kamakuza/chinese air rifle and pistol already).

Now with firearm laws in NZ you need a license to own a firearm. Air guns however do not require a license, you merely need to be 18 years old or over.

Me being somewhat busy with work and stuff I couldn't be arsed getting my firearms license. So I started investigating some of the new higher power air rifles. There were some added benefits in lower noise (cow cockies don't like you spooking their stock), cheap ammo etc.

After much research I liked what I saw in the Gamo CFX. An underlever rifle, very accurate, up to 1000fps (yeah I know this is 'optimal'). Eventually I found one on our local ebay equivilant for
Wow am I impressed. I did some tweaking over the weekend, getting the scope lined up etc. I was shooting targets pinned to some standard 1 inch square solid wood garden stakes. To my suprise the rifle was penetrating these stakes fully (as well as the 1 inch fencing... luckily the neighbours weren't home). An air rifle? Penetrating 1 inch of sold wood?  :D

Anyhoo, I started telling friends, relies, workmates about my new toy... many of them are shocked that no license is required, especially given the power AND that there are more powerful (1600fps rifles available) that need no license yet if I wanted to buy a plane old .22 with ~1000fps muzzle velocity I'd need a license. Ironic isn't it :)

Bunnies here I come :D

Your going to kill helpless, defenseless little bunnies, that have never done anything in their lives to harm you???

"Follow. But. Follow only if ye be men of valour, for the entrance to this cave is guarded by a creature so foul, so cruel that no man yet has fought with it and lived. Bones of full fifty men lie strewn about its lair. So, brave knights, if you do doubt your courage or your strength, come no further, for death awaits you all with nasty, big, pointy teeth."

Someone already has: http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=9BXyHTYcpmg

Second shot is what it sounds like, theres more of crack though.

Dontcha guys think it's ironic though you can own an airgun so powerful without a license? :)

p.s. Masherbrum none of those knights would've been harmed if they had the relevent CCW laws in england.

I had a pointing dog that would work rabbits and pin them like they were pheasants or quail. No kidding, he would dance with them a bit and then go on point when they stopped running. Then I would walk up and see the poor helpless creatures shaking with fear afraid to move.

At which point I'd blow their heads off with my shotgun, skin them, quarter them, and eat them for dinner.

                      Boy....I miss that dog.

What is funny is that you can't ship pellet guns to kalifornia to private parties... along with things like lizard skin wallets and boots.

You can howerver... buy black powder guns.. including revolvers.   You need no license and no background check.. no anything.

You can buy an 1858 Remington revolver replica in 44 (.452 actually) you can then buy a "conversion" cylinder that shoots 45 colt ammo for it.  all with no hassle.

These all have dozens of times the energy of the most powerful airguns (save a very few specialty ones).

Airguns are fun :)

Thats my RWS 48 with my Drulov pistol. Your CFX might shoot 1000fps w/ 7.0 grain pellets but thats only about 15ftlbs of energy. A .22 rimfire is around 120-140 ftlb. Also, the ballistic coefficient of pellets is generally much lower than that of bullets. So they lose their energy much faster.

They can still be deadly but at 100 yards your CFX would barely break someones skin. Whereas a .22lr could still easily kill.

In the more powerful guns heavier pellets usually perform better. Not only more accurate but they retain more energy at range.

If you look at the chart here http://www.straightshooters.com/ourtake/ottest48.html

You'll see at 50 yards the heavy pellets are actually moving faster than the lighter ones due to thier higher BC. You might want to try getting some heavies and see how they shoot out of your CFX. I've found the Kodiak match pellets to be the best in my 48.

Enjoy your CFX and check out the forum here http://www.network54.com/Forum/479035/
Lots of CFX  info there.

But if that happens, then Vulcan can expect this sort of PETA protest happening outside his home:

They are very educational.   Most folks have no clue as to what really happens when bullets hit living flesh.

What you typically see in movies and TV is not what actually takes place.

Thanks for the info (yeah I know about the energy and the drop off in speed :)  ) . I'll check out those forums, the area I go bunny hunting has pigs and deer as well (a small deer kill with an airgun would be....ok yeah I'm dreaming :D  ).

In some parts yes (down the South Island in Central Otago it's pretty bad).

Guys you might want to read about how economicly destructive introduced rabbits are to Australia and New Zealand before you give Vulcan any chit.

Or don't you beleive in doing your bit to help save your ecosystem and economy?

I could give a flip how many bunnies Vulcan plinks.

We shoot the pidgeons who roost in our manufacturing building all the time. Use a one pump single shot pellet rifle. Works like a charm.

What I don't do is take great pleasure in the amount of damage the firearm causes, or joke about how they look so funny flopping around the floor.

Bustr,

That was the reason I asked the question I did. I understand the damage that released rabbits caused in Australia. Removing rabbits doesn't bother me a bit.

Just a followup, someone asked for pics so I thought it post my first 'kills' :P (yeah I know it's gross).

Sat morning I got up early and climbed the hill, its a big steep hill, so the exercise is perfect for me. The way up is steep and open, no cover, so I didn't bother looking for/shooting at bunnies though a few broke from cover.  At the top is a nice open field bordered but a pine forest, with patches of lush green grass, as I explored I suprised a few bunnies and never really had a shot. But I got the feel for the area.

So last night I returned, it was a perfect evening. Low cloud, light showers that cleared up by the time I reached the top. This hill was so high that the top was in the cloud :)   . Upon reaching the top I went to the corner of the forest to prepare, out of the corner of my eye I spot a bunny 'hull down' 20m from me - bugger I wasn't ready yet - so I slowly pull my rifle out from the bag, and reach for the ammo - but at that point he decided to do a runner. Nevermind.

So I get ready, as I load my first round and cock the gun I spy some ears in the long grass 50m from me. I'm uphill and downwind with a slight ridge between me and him allowing me to creep another 20m closer. I nailed him with a headshot - my first kill with this rifle.

Anyhoo, 3 bunny's in total, well actually 2 hares and 1 little teenage bunny....

ps for those PETA dweebs, this hill has a bad bunny problem, with holes all over that a dangerous to livestock, and hares that devour any sappling trees.
