you are exposed to many different things. some great, some you'd rather pass (like a guy who posted a ton of rap lyrics somewhere buried in there)
In general though, you may be introduced to something you have never heard and may have interest in....
So how many of you actually look up and listen to samples, or whatever of the song by XXX you don't know?
Amazon and similar can be a real PITA some times, as the sample doesn't give a good representation of the song. With the RIAA and such I can understand someone not going out hog-whole and downloading full songs at will, but at the same time what exactly is the point of a thread like this?
When I started the first thread it was all about introducing others to music they may not have heard, or known about. Yes some get wrapped up in the 'game' of it all and just want to post something ridiculous to continue the 'game'. that kind of bugs me, but anyway, lets get to the point of this thread:
Many of us here are partial to either a certain genera, or band. This is EXTREMELY Liberal of me (if you know me) but hey open your minds! I have looked up quite a few songs posted in there just to see if either I didn't know it, or missed something the first listen. Now honestly 80% of the songs posted I have either heard and know, or just heard partially. If I were to just choose a 'key' work in the song I'd guess 90% of the time I can think of a song with that word in the title, and simplly post the chorus to continue the thread.
What fun is that? Every time I post in that thread I am listening to the song I quote from, and I chose that song for a reason. I'd guess the reason is to get others to listen to something they may not have heard in the past. I could easily reply with "Genie in a Bottle" by that Christina A. chick, as the word 'Bottle' sticks out, and besides the Barbara Eden reference sorry to say that's the first thing that come to mind. Blooz, I'm not picking you out I am picking ME out as a first thought kind of thing.
What I guess I am asking is I make a point of matching the lyrics to a song I may be hearing and am playing for a reason hoping some other may say 'whoa 73 thanks for the great song to listen to!' :aok

Any others out there just totally sick of what the music industry puts out to try and spoon feed us and look to the internet and recommendations for something 'new' to listen to? My personal tastes involve almost anything except hippity-hop / R&B made after 1990, and I know there is a Ton out there I just never have been exposed to. A great example a select few may understand where I am coming from is Ray Charles. I dismissed almost all his music as my 'parents' generation, knowing most of the songs because as a kid I heard them, but generally giving a finger to that old stuff... Then I watch the movie, with a better audio mix, and some basic knowledge I started looking into it. Yeah I 'knew' 2/3 of the songs, but I dismissed the tonality, and musicianship involved with many of them.
Maybe I am being a music snob, thinking I know and listen to more that you all do :lol I do listen to everything between The Carpenters, Megadeth, Clint Black, and Paula Abdul. I am a fan of first off well structured songs, great talent on the instrument, and production quality. A Great example is The White Stripes. I haven't found more than 1 song I can stand by Jack White. Lately he is the second coming according to the RIAA or whatever, but even Jimi Page had more proficiency dead drunk in '72 than that jerk does. Does he have to use the up octave effect all the time?
Anyway thanks for listening, and I was just curious as to what you as a music fan were looking for out of the interent and threads like the one mentioned!

I have really been into Radiohead since about 1995. There have been no greater musical revolutionaries (in my opinion) since the Beatles. I have also gotten into a band called Dead Meadow. They are kind of a punky cross between Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin (circa Physical Graffitti).
A great way to find new music is Pandora (http://www.pandora.com/). Just punch in your personal taste and it starts playing music.

Oh I have a pandora account going back 3 years... just wondering if others have done anything similar....
guessing from your post I would say mid-to-late 20's, maybe early 30's?
35 here and I have to say Radiohead isn't the second coming, but quite experimental in their life. Kind of like Talking Heads of the 90's/00's (Mind you they started in the 80's, but were "unknown" in mainstream until about 1988-1990)

i cant say i did it often, but youtube almost always has something...
really you cant get a feel for whether or not you would have any interest in the song from 1 - 4 lines of lyrics...but it did make me want to listen to some of the stuff i havent heard in a while

yes...but i dont listen to much that the music industry would try to spoon feed to me anyway.

I have a wide and varied taste in music.
I was brought up on classical music and easy listening of my Parent's style, Neil Diamond, Seekers, Sonny and Cher, Beatles etc. Then when I was at school there was the Monkees' and Meatloaf, Suzie Quatro, Jon and Vangelis, Sky, Air Supply (don't ask) and more. I've always have been a keen listener of radio. I did go through an easy listening phase when I was caught up in the whole Christian anti-rock and roll hype of the mid 80's but soon after I left the fold I branched out into more forms. I began to listen to hard blues and classic rock during my short army service and subsequent civilian transfer of my apprenticeship. I then got into heavy metal and thrash while I was at uni with a mixture of folk.
When I moved to Adelaide and began to get deeply involved in the wrong side of the law, hip-hop and other alternative music styles including techno found their way into my collection. When the evil one and I separated she maintained her evil grip on my then substantial music collection :cry
I'm just beginning to recoup some lost memories, mostly in MP3 format these days as it's somewhat easier to store and we can just take the I-Pod into the car and not have to mess with dozens of CD's.

The art of the thread was to take a word or words from the last posters lyrics and post a song that included the same words. Simple huh?
But Nooooo... some just blatantly posted some lyrics that had nothing to do with the rules of the thread.
Simple. Post maybe 4 - 6 lines that included the last persons words and finish it with the Artist name and Song name.
Example:
Mary had a little lamb,
Little lamb, little lamb,
Mary had a little lamb,
Its fleece was white as snow
~Sarah Josepha Hale~ Mary Had a Little Lamb
Next could be:
Ziggy really sang, screwed up eyes and screwed down hairdo
Like some cat from Japan, he could lick 'em by smiling
He could leave 'em to hang
Came on so loaded man, well hung and snow white tan.
~David Bowie~ Ziggy Stardust
The joining word from both songs would have been: snow .... see you got it.
It was all spelt out in the first few posts of the thread.

I had a blast with Mac yesterday, ripping off the diddy's just as quick as we could. First I started tapping my feet, and humming tunes, then singing, and whistling, and finnaly plugging in and ripping out some Mighty Met! A fun, upbeat thread. .

You might not like rap, but I do, I like all music, if it has a good beat to it I like it, I like everything from rap to classic rock, alternative, & metal. I like music, I don't limit myself to one music style. Now there are bands within each style that I don't like, just like there ones I do. By far my favorite band of all time would be Sublime, I also like Tupac, Eminem, Eazy-E, Black Crows, Beatles, Tom Petty, Linkin Park, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Tool, Led Zeppelin, and more just to give you a small sample. People tend to put rap down without really ever listening to it, most of the newer stuff I don't care for, I'm more into the stuff from the 90's.

<<-- 40. Musician. Radiohead started in the late eighties as a college band called "On a Friday". They lifted the name "Radiohead" from a Talking Heads song. They were unknown until 1994 - 95 with "Creep". OK Computer is easily the best thing to come out of the last part of the last century.

I don't ever look up anything just to find something fresh. My husband & sons do though. If I see something posted on here, then I may look for additional pieces. If I hear one of my sons listening to something, sometimes I'll look for additional pieces (he likes the bubblegumrock: 30 sec. to mars, kill hannah, my chemical romance)

It was a Great time Stampf!!! I was bouncing all over Utube listening to some of the songs being posted. Brought back alotta old memories...That's good for an old fart. :D

On the way into work for the morning, I listen to the rock channel on the radio. On the way home from work in the afternoon I listen to the country channel on the radio. In the evening at home while cleaning I listen to classical channel on the radio. On Sundays I listen to the big band special on the radio.

you should look into MP3's txmom. get a 20gb player, and rip all your CD's on to it. I use my PC now since I am head of IT, but before that some simple cheap PC speakers plugged into the MP3 player was my tunes at my desk. I had them all in 1 place, and would just set a shuffle.

I think I've got one of those gadgets, or something similar. They store music and videos/movies. I use a program to buy CDs (or individual songs)off an internet site, which stores them both on my computer and on the gadget. I don't think it's an mp3 player though. My kid has one of those & it looks different than mine. Mine has a video player. An mp3 player is just for music, but does the same thing, right?
One of my kids got the thing in his room. Haven't seen it in months. I bet when I get it back all of my Craig Morgan & Ella Fitzgerald is gone. :)
Those gadgets are such a good idea though. There are some folks that I like only ONE song from, and don't want to suffer through their whole CD just to hear the one song.

Well I'd definitely say you have a wide range of music you like, just like myself. I like just about everything from rap, classic rock, to metal. I find that people usually try to pigeon hole you, and if say you like to listen to Metallica, then you can't listen to Tupac, and vise versa. I like just about all music and don't allow myself to shut out one type of music just because other people don't think I should listen to it. I'm guessing you find the same happening to you, like with listening to Slayer, I'm sure people can't believe or don't think you should listen to Slayer just because of who you are.
