Title: 1st almost kill!
Post by: jimson on February 19, 2008, 10:46:51 AM
I was flying around up high, mainly just to observe the battles and see how the vets do it, when I saw an unescorted flight of B24's.

My 1st experience with these bombers had me getting creamed by the tailgunners, but this time I had altitude and couldn't resist.

I nosed over and went screaming down, guns blazing on the lead ship, scoring several hits before slicing through the formation (somehow without colliding).

They probably had a good laugh when I couldn't pull out of the dive and "noobed it" into the drink.

I'm in serious trouble. This game almost gives me a woody.

Hello Jim,

Everybody has been there at least once.  As a word of advice, never resist the urge!  It's more fun that way!:aok

congrats on your almost kill :D

Remember, the bullet stream is like a hose.  Keep the water on 'em for as long as you can.

my first ever kill was a niki that i hit with a rocket from a p38. i spent the next 2 weeks trying to figure out why my 'missiles' wouldn't lock on anymore... :huh

welcome to the addiction :)

A tip for ya Jim, anytime your nose down to dive on something, and your gonna be diving for a few thousand feet, drop your throttle, otherwise you compress like you did, see after your plane gets to a certain speed the control surfaces on your plane stop working and you end up hitting the ground like you did.

I've been flying flight sims for over 10 years and still make noob mistakes. It's one part of the game that you will never lose. :D

My best one was when i was in a 262 over a nme base, flew around for a long time never seeing anyone. I finally got bored and dove on the base to straff a building just out of bordum. Right when I got ready to fire, Knits upped a huge mission. About the time I was ready to turn toward them and line up on them I got pinged by ack. It startled me and I ended up augering right in front of them. Man did I get a lot of 's and LOL. Think 30 guys got to watch me auger my 262 in front of them.....LOL...Well at least my sortie accomplished something....Gave a lot of knits a good laugh....LOL...Was great getting 30 at once too. :D

If you really want to learn how to attack the bombers then first fly the bombers. And Im not sure lawn darting in fighters a few times to begin with is all that bad a thing because you have to learn the limits of the airplanes. The thing is to try and not do it twice in the same airplane.

I rocked some 24s the other day in a Spit-16 which is a far better bomber killer then I knew it was. It has really good flight characteristics and decent firepower. Its climbs great, is pretty fast at ALT, and dives well.

On B-24s shoot the engines.... they start burning easily. Once burning wait for it to explode before dropping in again. That way there are less guns to shoot at you. Never come in on their 6... angles angles angles.

First and formost have fun!!!

Welcome to the addiction.

(We are not kidding.)

I still remember the details of my first kill, almost 4 years ago. (Not a natural sim pilot, came to the online genre and haven't looked back.)

Don't hesitate to look for help. Ghosth (one of the trainers) has a particular knack with brand new guys, getting them up and doing OK with a great deal of support and patience -- give him a PM if you see him about!

Welcome to "The Game" Jim and let me be the first to welcome you with a "Check 6".

The more you learn the more there is to learn ;)

Have fun and hope to see you either on my wing or wingless.

To add on to shuffler's post, a better target against B-24s is the wing between the inboard engine and the fuselage. The engines light up easily, but that part of the wing goes up like a brush fire during a California summer. Come in with a vertical drop, just watch your airspeed.

Haha, we all have been at that stage, and sometimes I'm still there...

But how could you not pull out from a dive from that high?

Congrats on your almost-kill!

Greetings,

Once you compress (i.e. no matter what you do the nose ain't coming up).  As stated earlier, pull the throttle all the way back.  This gives you longer to scream into the ground as only gravity is now pulling you down.  You will note that you still aren't slowing down.  Next use the manual trim up keys to pull the nose up.  Once the nose is up and you have regained control, auto climb or level to reinstate auto trim.

Just 'A Way' to get out of it - and often I wait to long to start and still hit the ground....

Regards,

You can go to the Training Arena and pick up a few tips from some of the Trainers.

It'll work wonders.

wait till you ram a set of bombers with a 262. that'll get you going (to the fridge for another drink maybe).

You reminded me of an F4U-4 flight not to long ago. I was escroting some B-17's at 20 K and had no luck getting a kill because the only thing that came up to play with us was a 262 or 2 that kept running away.

On the return trip I was making coments on the speed of my 4 hog when what do I see but 2 red guys fighting a single green at about 15 K or so. I roll over and dive in choping throttle but not really taking into account the speed I had already picked up.   I dove in and continued right on through the fight, my controlls having locked up.  My F4U-4 went screaming and creaking into the water at 500+ Mph but held togeather the entire way down lol.. :rofl

I just had to laugh at myself on that one. :D

Well I started out pretty high, but once I got down to them I wasn't so high anymore, and had a huge amount of speed and energy built up. Like Trax and MWL said compression might have occurred, that and the fact that I really don't know what the hell I'm doing yet would probably explain it.

I'm going to go ahead and pay for a subscription now that my 2 weeks are up and will put all you guy's tips and advice into practice.

Thanks to all.
Jim

Dont worry bud, we all do that! I still try to get D200 out in my spit 1, coming in at a severe angle against an M3 :rofl  Did that about 10 times last night HAHAHA!

I well remember my first kill, Id been playing for a while, about 2 months and I was starting to get depressed caus I couldn't hit anything in my Spit 1. Well, bumped into a mate in a B24 and he asked me if I wantde to go on a bombing trip. So off we went. On the return trip at 15K Niki sloooooowly comes up behind me, dead six. Well, I fire and I fire and I firer some more. Eventually he just peels off and spins! I didnt believe I'd actually killed him! As it was I crashed the 24 on landing! Such is life!

Welcome to Aces High and always remember if you go into a dive, you may want to check if the water is solid again. I still do :aok

Well I'll be damned if I didn't get my first actual.

Me and a la7? were pursuing a spitfire, I broke off a couple of times so as not to steal his kill when it looked like he had position. When I banked around a third time I found myself on the guys 8 o-clock, dropped in on his 6 and took the shot with cannons.

Hope the la7 guy isn't pissed, I tried to give him 1st crack.

Checked my stats and 3 kills listed, How is that?

Did I land some shots on someone else and disengage before I saw them go down?

jim,

Go to the training forum and ask for advice there or log into the training arena.  There are some very fine gents who donate lots of time to helping new guys over the hump.

Working on all that now but I still like to get in and fly a little now and then for fun.
