What are the differences between an F4u1 and a 1a? Are they about the same?
I know the F4u1 is more of a dog fighter as opposed to the 1d/c models.
The both feel lighter. But in terms of performance in AH, what are the differences between the two?
-
Performance? Almost no difference. I thought somebody did tests and found them to be almost identical.
Not that I know why BOTH were included. I'm sure there was a reason.
-
Ok I think I'll hit the high lights.
1A has more power by 250hp
1A has spoilers on the outer edges of the wings
1A has a longer tailwheel leg
1A has a different canopy
Not sure if it's all modeled int he game but those are the major differances in real life
Of all the non-perk f4u's I like the 1A best...feels the best. I would rather fly it than the 1C. The 1C is only good for vulching and town killing. Think I'll take some flak for that statement. In an all out dogfight the 1A would kill the crap out of a 1C...provided the 1A survived the HO on the 1st merge.:p

Both aircraft are fairly close in top speed, though the 1A has a very slight advantage (couple mph at most). The 1A also has a small advantage in turn radius (few feet, so practically negligible).
However...
- 1 I believe has somewhat larger fuel tanks.
- 1A has much improved visibility due to the bubble canopy.
- As noted, the 1A generates slightly more HP out of its engine, comparible to the F4U-1D.
- The 1A we have I believe is a later block that also has the larger paddle-bladed prop used in the 1D.
- Because of the previous two points, the 1A has a SIGNIFICANTLY improved rate of climb and acceleration, and is superior to the Birdcage in any vertical maneuvers. This is the biggest performance difference between the two.
-
I like the F4u-1 mainly cuz of the fact that i like to see my six, if tha wasnt the prolbem, i would prolly be in the 1a or the 1d
-
simply put, the 1A is better than the 1 at almost everything.
-
I fly the -1 over the -1a. Why, I just think the -1 alittle more stable, espescially in the stall fighting. Another probably because I get the PM's saying, u cheat, there no way u can do that in a -1. hehehehehe
-
Dogg,
If that's the case then the modeling in the -1 is wrong. The stall strip to alleviate the Corsair's stall stability was first introduced in the 1A, so the birdcage SHOULD be more prone to departure.
Has anyone ever done a serious test to confirm whether the -1 is ACTUALLY more stable than the later models, or whether it's just pilot impression?
-
The most I could do, Sax is measure the deflection produced by the stick at certain speeds, essentially giving me a rough turning performance 'feel.' I would find the stick deflection in the Controls>Map Controllers section and look at the y-axis while turning without losing altitude. Then I looked at the E6B simultaneously to rey and grab the IAS numbers.
The F4U-1 began to hammer approximately 3 mph ahead of the A-Hog and departure was exactly the same. I couldn't find any sort of single wing stall as a result of low-speed stalling.
I couldn't feel much more stability vs. the F4U-1A (unless i left the A-Hog's wing fuel cells full/not empty) in which case the A-Hog would stall a little sooner.

I'd fly the -1 over the -1A any day. Seems more stable in fights and feels like it can turn sharper.
-
i personally find the a hog a lot more stable than any of the other hogs. infact i'd rather have a 1a than a -4 in a duel because it is that much more stable than any of the others, while the -4 is very wobbly.

you serious?
dunno which hog you've been flying and what fuel load you've been carrying....
-
I dunno, i dont fly hogs much, but the -1 just feels more fun for some reason :)
-
Yep, also the -1 doesnt feel like one of those rides that will just crap out on you.

That and the floor window is a nice lil feature... i like both but if i want to survive id stick with the A model.
