I was looking for one I saw online years ago that someone won a national competition with- it was silver and completely shredded with combat damage. the plane itself was incredible, and the diorama built around it with the ground personel crowding around it, ambulances, etc. was just incredible. But I haven't been able to find it for quite some time.

Is that bottom one one of the original 1970s era Sheperd Paine dioramas? Kinda looks familiar...
He's pretty much the father of model diorama making. Worked as a professional modeller, on commission and for museums, his entire career. When Monogram came out with a new line of models in the mid 70s, they contralcted with him to come up with these "here's what you can do" full color 4 page pamphlets with a diorama he built. They were incredible, like a whole new way of building models.
Actually got to hear him speak once. He said he had under 2 weeks lead time from getting the first casting till turning in the pictures and writeup. They'd use whatever plastic was in the line, so the B-17 came to him bright pink. There were tons of the things. (I still have a few of them in my basement, though the models I made back then havent held up at all.)
He also said that all those dioramas were disappeared. For a while they were at Monogram headquarters, but by the mid 80s no one knew what had happened to them. So they only exist as pictures now.

Found it. Here's another view, of Shep Paine's original. I think the second photo is either another view of the same model, or a more modern duplication of SHep's layout.

I also have the model set for that B17. It came with a booklet showing all the different details of that diorama. One picture shows an inside shot of the navigators compartment where the floor is covered in bullet casings from firing the machine gun. That guy was amazing with his skill in model building.

And that was done with tools and parts from 30 years ago. Just amazing.
If you have any interest in actually doing diorama design and building, you must read Paine's book. Verlindin does really good stuff, but Sheperd Paine has the best comprehensive discussion of the process (in Englsi, at least)

The monogram B17G came with a pamphlet from Paine about that diorama so I believe both those photos are from it.
All the Monogram 1/32nd scale tanks came with similar pamplets showing his work on their armor in dioramas. Still remember the hedgerow cutter Sherman diorama and on with the jeep as well as the M16.

I have several as well -- my favorite is still the tropical P-61 ripped open for engine change. I still kick myself for not taking them with me to the Chicago IPMS meeting some years back. I knew Paine would be there, and I attended his presentation. Talked with him a bit afterwards, but didnt realize what a blunder I'd made until the next guy in line had him sign the pamphlets...
Not sure if he's still around, because honestly he didn't look so hot from a health standpoint back then.

Man this thread takes me back. I used to be a serious model builder in my younger days. I loved Paine's dio's. I built the B-25H junked out in the bone yard and the Ostwind in the bombed out town. I was a member of IPMS back then too. Still have my thirty year old airbrush and tools. Seeing the pictures makes me want to go dig them out and build a kit.
