Only a matter of time, thought figure the US PC Gaming market declined 6% last year. Compare to consoles growth 31% will be interesting to see what it is each quarter this year.

I've been noticing it for alot more then just the last year.
all you have to do is walk into any electronics store or a store that sells computer games.
Software Etc for example used to be 95% computer games and 5% consoles.
Now your lucky of you find 1 section on 1 shelf the has computer games.
and half of those are marked down
-
Similar here, small shelf for PC New Releases, rest are in the bargin bin. I wonder how much longer Microsoft will keep up with Flight Simulator, as in the past that's always been one of the biggest sellers for a PC based game.

Something else the PC games drop in price pretty fast meanwhile Xbox PS3 and other console systems prices stay more stable. That likely has something to do with it on the retailer end.
-
you can thanks the affordability of large flat screen tv's for this....was bound to happen.
so how does this bode for aces high?
-
I'm sorry guys, this is my fault. I'll start buying more games when I have more money.
-
So HT
How long before we can play Ace's on the Xbox or whatever that console is that connects to the Internet?
J/K
Actually not kidding, what does it take to convert a PC game to something like that, could be a whole new market.
-
Also, its argueably easier to pirate games on PC than it is to mod your Xbox etc.
I own a Wii, which is fun especially when having company over...but it would be a long time before I turn it in for another console system.
-
Thats too bad too, because a lot of the console games of the last year or two would be much better served as PC games- the specific one I'm thinking of is that awful Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire for the PS3. If that had been a PC game (and they'd let fans mod it and make campaigns and missions like Il2 does), and if it had been made for a HOTAS setup instead of a handheld controller... but alas, it was a complete flop as a PS3 game. Might have done very well as a single player PC game/MMOG.
-
I think there are several factors involved in the decline of PC gaming. One of them they mentioned, the constant upgrading of your pc to play the next game, memory, video cards, motherboards, cpu's... it gets expensive and tiresome. Also when was the last time you bought a PC game and didnt have to immediately download a patch to fix something or search for drivers to upgrade your system to solve issues?
And another thing is playablility, there just nothing really out there thats all that different from the games you played last year or the year before. The only thing that changes is better graphics, more levels, now has multiplayer online.... Half-Life 2 was the last game I played that I really enjoyed.. and C&C 3 I liked but I like real time strategy games and I like the interface with the game, otherwise its no different than the other C&C games that came before.
And finally, Money. I'm paying more for gas, food, utilities than I was two years ago, that eats into my game buying funds. When I do get a game I search for used or bargin shop. I just do not see a need to rush out and buy the next game for $50-60 when I can wait 6 months and get it for $30-40 or a year and get it for even less
-
I figure we will see them marketing them online. Pretty much like Aces High has done.
-
I think the biggest factor is being able to play these games online. I got bored with my PS2 air combat game, the aircraft were easily outflown and always did the same thing. Aces High has not gotten boring for me because it is never the same, although at times it does feel stale, there is something that will shake it up.

Any way to get COD4 for the PS3 to work with a mouse? Joystick sucks for that game.

Interesting. Thanks for the tip, I'll likely buy one.

I hate all those little hand held games (including xbox, ps, etc). I can't work the controls AT ALL. My kids get on cod, halo, etc & can really tear it up. I get on the thing, and I end up staring straight up at the sky while running in a circle after getting stuck in a corner.
I know how I want the toy character to maneuver, and theoretically I understand which "buttons" are supposed to translate to which movements, but I absolutely for the life of me can't connect one with the other.
What's the nerdy computer talk for 'they suck?'

Meh. Shooters are meant to be played with Mouse and WASD.
It's a cycle, guys. Remember back in the early to late 80s when consoles dominated? Their technology was just much more advanced than PCs at the time so you could just DO more for gaming on consoles.
However as the 90s rolled around, PC capabilities began to outgrow the consoles, so the PC became the real high-end gaming rigs.
Now we're seeing the technology advantage shift heading back towards the consoles again.
Consoles will also ALWAYS have the advantage of standardized hardware, whereas PC game manufacturers have to allow for a wide variety of hardware configurations.
But consider this:
Consoles are getting EXPENSIVE, in fact, the latest generation consoles are costing nearly as much as a low-end PC. It's not going to be much longer before console prices aren't going to be much lower than that of a good gaming rig. Also, whereas you can often upgrade your memory, video or CPU to meet more robust system requirements without necessarily replacing the whole thing, there's only one way to upgrade your console: buy a new one.
Give it a few years, and I guarantee the pendulum will swing back to the PC gamers again.
-
IF the PC gamer market goes, so does game advancment, at least at the rate it has been going.
Consoles are restricted by the platform far more then PC based games.
There will always be a market, it may be small though.

Agreed. That or a VR device making it even more natural. Joysticks, even if they are analog rather than '70's digital controls are a step backwards when it comes to look, point, shoot.
I've watched kids who are pretty good with console controllers still look mechanical compared to someone good with a mouse in an FPS.

Some of us, the minority of the FPSers, find Arrow keys > WASD :p

I guess that distinguishes between an FPSer and an RPGer. WASD is closer to the function keys. ;)

yea I gotta agree here big time.I cant play a fps with a consol.Just cant aim.Given the ability to mod games....Read all the ones that came before that people modded....I cant see consols putting up a serious challenge in the long term on pc based games.

I've noticed a lot of the new games are cross platform...Xbox, PS3, PC. If you buy the PC version, its not set up to really take advantage of your PC's hardware like a dedicated PC game would.
I imagine from the perspective of development...making a PSP or XBOX game is way easier, especially via Tech Support, as the consoles are close to identical. That alone must be a huge savings, adding for more profits.
-
The PC gaming market has been "on the verge of extinction" for well over a decade now. Still going strong. It never had and never will have the mass appeal of the consoles. But it does most things better, and some exclusively. It still makes plenty of cash, but the bigger houses will generally shift to consoles. Thus leaving more room for new, fresh and hungry developers.
I just played through the console inspired COD4. It was OK. I am replaying Stalker now though, which is excellent. About the only real excellent part of COD4, IMO, was the AC130 side game :) The rest, the health system and combat scenarios and save system were all too arcade and too console, though it was fine light entertainment with a neat theatrical flavor. Not to mention games like Rome/Midevil Total war or CIV 4 or AH or SH3-4, etc..

I miss going into the city to EB and stuff, making a day at the mall, spending hours looking over different pc games. I would get one or two games and most times was content to sit and play it. Once I started AW back in the 90s I bought less games. I have an xbox but going to buy those games isnt the same for me.
-
Since I like the strategy style games I don't have much interest in a console. The games the consoles have just don't compare. If things like donkey king and other arcade games are your cup of tea a console might be the best bet.
I agree with Sax on the longevity of the PC vs the console. The PC just has more versatility than a console to help justify the cost. Buying a new console every couple of years just doesn't interest me at all. What happens if the console is not backwards compatible, you lose all the previous games the old one used to play.
-
again I ask.............
what about the future of aces high?
do you think there are more members in aces high, then say, five years ago, or a year ago? or less now?

I wouldn't say that contributes to much. In the past 2 years there hasn't been that many interesting games for PC. Most of the games are way too simple for my taste, or should I say excessively repeative. Arcade airplane games, arcade FPS with simple maps (yawn), games released almost a year too soon....
I wouldn't even pirate the crap.
-
Exactly.
Todays game are made FOR xbox and PS's
THEN PORTED, to computer.
Thus we get a short dog crap game with bad graphics and bad controls, no configurability and ultamitly nothing new.
Sorry, i dont buy games anymore, and like stated above, most games arent even worth pirating anymore.
CoD all of them, full on horse crap.
If duke forever, turns out to be another raped sold out PORT from the xbox or ps's im quiting (gaming) all together.
Dont even bother arguing, i dont give a rats arse how much you like CoD or how hard the models get you, its still just a steping stone of every one before it.
Show me the modifications for it (oh thats right they wont release the source code)
Show me how i can bind my keys to whatever i want ( oh thats right, the keys are exstentions of CONTROL IMPUT COMMANDS)
Show me where i can change my graphic settings & screen res.
Show me..no..you know what, dont show me...you couldnt even if you want too.
Your consol games have nothing to offer.
-
While it's true that pc game revenue has tapered off in the US - that is not so for the rest of the world.
Europe appears to be the biggest pc target at the moment.
It's just that the console technology has finaly caught up with the pc. Mind you, the way prices are going, a mid range pc is gonna cost the same as a console soon.
What is so attractive to developers is the standard of a particular console... and so many big names are focusing on the big bucks.
You know what - fine by me - leaves the pc in its niche as the true gaming machine --- give me independant developers churning out stuff that's pushing the envelope.
Consoles can have the Mc EA's ....
Me... stuff like Crayon Physics Deluxe, Spore, Tower of Goo, Armadillo Run etc means that the console will always be the arcade in your home. The PC will remain cutting edge, pushing the envelope - dictating what the console will have in a few years time... or maybe not, face it - consoles are about sales - pc is the spirit.

I have a friend who is getting married to an AC130 pilot this fall and according to him that part of the game was dead on the nuts to what they see on the screens when they are on a fire support mission.
I wish that someone (PC GAME MAKER APPLY HERE) would make an AC130 type game. One that would be similar to that last B-17 game where you could man multiple stations from the bombadier, navigator, co-pilot, etc... If they did that in an AC130 (NO NOT BF2 or whatever it was that had one.) then I can guarantee that I would spend some cash on it. Even if it was a add-on to Lock-On or something along those lines.

Geez I hope not. Phones are meant to talk to people and smart phones are meant to talk and email people. Not play games on or at least any bigger game than what my wife has on her blackberry with the pong style game or what I have on mine....golf.

That will never happen, because the consoles are sold for under the manufacturing costs of a single unit. It's all thanks to the monopoly over the consoles - the real profit comes from the games and accessories.
-
PS3 was what, $500-700 depending on the version?
You can almost get a bargain-basement Wal-Mart branded PC for that.
Hell, I could put together a respectable, even if it's NOT mind-blowing, gaming PC for that.

Was the first combat sim I played back in the day. It had the AC130 with the different gun cams. Of course this game is circa 1997 and you'll need a fast Pentium 100mhz or so to run her. However, the coding for the game doesn't like newer processor. I remember trying it out when I built my P4 system about 5 years ago and it ran about 10FPS.

That was a great game and a great book by Dale Browne.
I also miss F-15 strike eagle and F-19 stealth. Those games I played for hours.
I also Played Secrete Weapons of the Luffwaffa (what turned my love of WW2 air combat)
There was also a game with helicopters and you could pick the blackhawk, Apache, and cobra but i cant remember the name. All those games gave me countless hours of fun when I was younger.
Now you need to read 709 pages of readme files, and 40 hours of flight time just to figure out how to take off in Falcon 4.0
-
(http://www.migman.com/ref/1990_combat/AcesPacific/pics/box_AcesPacific.jpg)
Still the BEST air-combat simulation ever.
-
Got to remind you all that PS3 has a supercomputing processor. It's yet to be used to full potential. This console is good for another ~8 to 10 years.
I've yet to see new PC games that can be run in full high def mode like PS3s (1080p)
-
The first aerial combat simulator I flew was a DOS game called JETFIGHT
It would fit on a 1.44MB floppy :lol
I flew F15 Strike Eagle for a while which was pretty cool even though it became predicable after a while.
-
There is an online flight sim for the PS3. It's called Warhawk.
http://www.gameshark.com/reviews/2742/Warhawk-Review.htm
It's obviously recycled Planetside code. You can do aerial combat, but also jump out and run into tanks and even be a foot soldier.
The MP limit per server instance on the PS3 network is 32, which doesn't approach Planetside's code.
There are no realistic physics, no historically accurate flight dynamics. But there is also no lag, and it supports voice.
It is downloadable online from the PS network, and I played it at a friend's house. It's not something you "get into" like AH, but it's alot of fun. Now that UT is out for the PS3 network, I doubt it will catch on, but it's more of a real flight sim than any of the Battlefield games are. When you get a Warhawk, you actually have to "fly" it, it's a plane with some flight dynamics, unlike the spaceships of most FPS games.
-
Good, I still remember flying "Super Huey" on my C-64 and thinking that was simply awesome :)
-
I still remember that neat space game on Atari that had mother ships you had to use reload and full 360 degree movement.
Best early PC game I had was BOB Their Finest hour. I played that thing for months. I finally got it down to being able to make a kill with 8 rounds total from the guns.
What switched me from Apple to a PC was the difference in games. The PC absolutely owned Apple in the game department. I've never had any inclination to switch back.
