I thought about this a long time ago and was gonna bring it up but never did. AcesHigh Internet Radio Station. What do you think about that? How many of you would listen? I not talking about just streaming music all day either. I think it would be fascinating to interview the staff from time to time. Also would be a great advertising platform. This is only a thought. Hitech please chime in with your thoughts as well.

Gave me flashbacks :)
Back in Airwarrior a couple of my Nomads squaddies did a 'radio program' they called "Mad Talk"
Ask Lev about it sometime. He was one of the two guys who put it together although lots of us contributed bits. It was hilarious. The weather and traffic report comes to mind right now and still makes me chuckle.
Wish I still had it.

How much $$ would it be?
-
One of our members set up a bops radio station for a short time to try out the idea, worked just fine.
-
I used to run a variety of radio stations far back in counterstrike for tournaments and presently run a pair of radio stations, one for trance and one for metal music.
http://www.powershout.com/
http://www.netrock101.com/
might have enough bandwith to setup a small station for 200 users, free of charge for anyone to DJ off. The only problem I ever had was accomidating everyones music list, I presently contain over 450gigs but in the hardrock, metal and trance area.

Well, I used to be a DJ for a few websites long ago and it was free. I do know that there was a big ta do about them last year. They tried to pass a bill to ban them but it failed. Now I am not sure about Hitech Creations haveing to pay royalty rights. I remember it not being that expensive for the license. That was years ago though.
-
I like the idea. I would check it out. :)
:aok
-
Each show could always just be an mp3 file that you could download and listen to. Keep them to an hour or so in length to keep the content interesting and the file size down.
-
I'd check it out too. :) :aok
-
Sounds interesting - i like.
-
What about the idea of having every night a 2-3 hour episode of what goes on daily, i.e AVA arena how's it going, the new developement etc
People in spare time can go download it when at work and listen, could be posted live every night around say... 8-12 eastern time.
(throwing some ideas out there)
Can have interviews with various players get an insight in them, where from, what inspired them to fly planes they do etc
-
anyone wants, contact me in private would love to help out donate anything I can to the idea.
-
I'd vote for it...as long as we had periodic voice commentary from a Tokyo Rose type, who mentioned particular members' exploits and taunted Knights, Bishops and Rooks often...and you could listen to it in your cockpit radio.
Could be very cool!
-
I've heard this idea before and still think its GREAT!!
Goooooooood Morning Aces High!!!
Boner
-
Very good idea! I support it completely!
Oink
-
Great Idea!
Anyone who heard the Mp3 stuff from the conn would have to agree!
A live show where you could call in and ask/ get answers to pertinent questions would be fun to listen to. Pick their brains kinda thing.... History... Future ... all of it
Who I'd really like to talk to is Waffle! That dude's been a very busy man!
4XTCH
-
I'd rather it was live and not downloaded.
Might be nice to have a 2 hourly war report on the map situations in both LW Arenas on how the war effort is going!
-
Sounds OK to me as long as we don't have Channel Squeak :rofl
-
Gimme three things.
1.) Something to drink
2.) AH
3.) WMP with Pink Floyd in the background
Wait, this is what I do currently.
-
You could also have a real-time video/audio stream on the station - maybe a weekly, hour-long interview with HTC staff (See http://www.ustream.tv). My buddies and I currently have a 'fake' internet radio station, full of stuff that's of interest only to our 'gang', but plan on expanding it. We use the ustream.tv for video & audio streams from our 'fake' studio.
It's simple to set up, the cost is zero, and it keeps us off the streets....

I would definitely listen to an AH station. Maybe HTC could put a webcam in their office so we can watch them coding the next patch!
-
Great idea.
Any of you guys heard/seen the Tales of Heroes show about Company of Heroes? Something of the sort would be really interesting with hosts talking about strat, the art of dogfighting, news etc. A monthly/biweekly/weekly podcast/video would be nothing short of amazing.
http://www.gamefire.com/content/blogsection/6/65/
(the insight of Adam "Bridger" Ruzzo is invaluable to anyone looking to up their CoH game).
Btw, I have collected 902 mp3s (2,12GB = 5 days of continuous play) of 1940s radio.
Everything from Churchill's speeches over news reports to German propaganda etc etc etc. Some are over an hour long, some are a minute or so.
I can add a bucket load of 1940s contemporary music as a cherry on top of that.
I use it sometimes when I fly to get "in the mood" (pun intended), it really adds a lot of flavor.
A new server is being set up at the moment, Adonai what's typical bandwidth usage? I may be able to run it for free.

Idea of it being downloaded for those that can't hear it live during hours its recorded live.
I.e its live from 7-12 but when shows over it can be sound edited and made available for download of those that missed the show. popular way for people to "stay in touch"

Hmmm thats a interesting idea.
-
Wouldn't be hard to edit up the sound file in between commercials and break it down and zip, however I dont know about dialup users wanting to download it, smallest format ive ever recorded in was 1 meg a minute of air time, 60 megs per hour, long download for them.

Useless radio chatter drives me further insane.

WWII online had something like this.I think it's a great idea. The possibilities are limitless. The hard part will be organizing and funding.Hope it works out.

I'd help fund it without a problem, but would like to get 1-2 guys from each country, to help keep it fair and together.

I'm pretty sure sponsorships deals will be straight forward on this one. Even 12-year old CS geeks can get free friggin' tshirts and hardware for their little clans....
-
would we be able to listen while we play??
-
absolutely. Most likely, it could run via either a browser or through your favorite mp3 player, ie. iTunes, winamp etc.

its little more involved then that, getting sponsors arn't that hard, in any event, its not that much money, were not paying 100 bucks a month for a cs server to begin with but just a winamp broadcast server, which is generally 25 bucks can get 100 listeners at decent quality
-
Come to think of it, getting sponsors so we could give away a piece of hardware once a month wouldn't be a bad idea, think I could wringle some of those up, for example we could get an nvidia video card for someone to upgrade with, or sticks of ram, that sorta thing.
I used to have a gaming clan in counterstrike was sponsored by nvidia and AMD, had a ball with the stuff they would send us after winning a major tournament, think with this community be easier to ask for sponsors.
-
That's what Im talking about! :)
ANyways, you seem to have full grasp of the tech side of things. Let me know if you need any help - or the 2 gigs of 40s radio shows and/or 40s music. Graphic design is my game 10 years+, so I'll put in work when and if needed.
-

It won't be run off a home computer connection, maybe for 5 listeners at max
Generally speaking I would start off with 25 person connection with a GOOD audio rate, cant remember i think 47000 was good rate of playback.
Price range for that generally varies, would recommend paying for a good solid connection, generally they are 1-2 dollars per listener, i.e 25 listeners 50 dollars, it all depends where, I prefer Virginia area (most stable for me I host 2 internet radio stations up there) so far only been down 1 day of last 5 years. impressive!
-
well banshee is one came up with idea, you need my info w/e shoot me a line in private Banshee
-
I was doing some calculations earlier on.
56 kbit streams = 25 megabyte per user per hour
=
2.5 gb per hour @ 100 users = 60 gb per day
=
1800 gb per month
I estimate a server and bandwidth cost @ ~ $200/month. Correct me if I'm off the mark here.
But if I'm right thats nuffin.
-
50 users, 60 gigs traffic, probably around 25 a month. Its generally around $2.50 per 10 gigs of traffic. It all depends the users and Bandwith you use a month.
I would say start out on something like that and test it per month, i.e if server gets 50 right off bat you can always add or take away some listeners. Was looking around its quite cheaper today then when I origionaly started lol
-
Id deffinately listen. Sounds great!

internet radio has been screwed over by U.S. congress...
a law they passed about over a 1/2 year ago made it that web radio stations would have to pay a royalty for EACH SONG PLAYED to the respective record companies...
the law killed my favorite station-Shanty Raid-io (it was a fan-created radio station for Three Ring's Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates)
so unless you gots a lotta money or if people accept perks as currency it my be hard to do

Most of the people who made these songs are dead, and I doubt anyone bought them since then. In fact, one of the most popular big band names of the time, an Air Corps favorite (Though his name escapes me at the moment) was killed by a Lancaster's UBER cookie during the war. I dont think we'll be paying royalties.
-
ah.... forgot about the whole dying thing....
-
well on my stupid squeaker opinion, it should have music playing and after every song or 2, announce who landed kills for what squad. :lol
Also, if you gonna make it live, put it on like satalite radio.

That would require a Radio DJ for the duration of the day, and dont think it would be good idea.
You don't need Sat Radio if its streaming on the net, it can be accessed anywhere, any time, in a stream format.
Meaning if your on dialup or even in space you can still get a stream live.

Well that is a kink in the plan, only bands that have not agreed or refused the law can be played freely on the air, but its according to Bandwith used, for example 50 gigs you will pay 12 dollars per month.
-
Has anyone looked into "Shoutcast" as a starting point for this.......?

Heh, just don't "air" it from the US...

No put it on sirius satalite radio, and just put like a list of songs for the day or have like a 1 hour show where they play music, discuss tactics, and announce who lands kills and what not.
-
I think it's a neat idea. Here is a link to one I use for Flight Simulator X called Sky Blue Radio.
http://www.skyblueradio.com/index.php
Once started, you tune a Com radio to 123.45 and the radio plays in game. You can also just play it without the game running. It's free.

An excellent idea. Maybe we can get an interview with SkyRock and he can name all the people he owns...:aok

That would take an entire day just to list all the number guys in order.
-
no no adonai, like when they announce them between 2 or 3 songs 1 or 2 hours of the day when some1 themself is there, they announce who lands kills during those 1 or 2 hours. Not for the whole day. Then everyone has a chance to land kills, but they need to change the time up so ppl dont try to land kills during that time. It would be cool like if some staff members did that like from the game. And when announcements came out, it would be announced on the radio. I think Sirius Satalite radio is cheaper to use for stations than regular satalite radio. (from what i heard.)
-
Sirus is Holy expensive compared to running shoutcast.
-
I would have to agree that the SHOUTCAST method would be the most cost effective (apart from being free).
-
i think it is a kool idea! i listen to xm radio 40,s on 4 during the summer after d-day all the time, they do the original broadcast from nbc radio for days, the music and news as it comes in. check it out sometime.
would it be possible to hear on say channel 225, or something in the game, running a loop of two or three hours rebroadcast from the live show for that day?
-
How about a BK documentary.
