Title: 486th BG 'Libra' B-24
Post by: Serenity on February 23, 2008, 10:17:39 PM
Alright, keep in mind, im doing this skin from a single original WWII picture that feel out of a book, lol.

Notes:

1)The flaps are split in two colors. I cannot find a way to make the whole flap match the trailing edge, without changing the color of the bottom of the wing.

2) The right side of the belly has a strange green tint to that. Ive already fixed that.

3) I see the weird mottling of the skin, but I dont know how to change that. Anyone knows?

4) I dont have the nose art or weathering yet. I cannot do the weathering myself I dont think, I just dont have the skill even to trace over it. So, if anyone wants to volunteer I would greatly appreciate it!

Heres the Libra so far:

It's hard to see any detail in your pictures.

Update:

My first batch of weathering. Made some scratches around hatches and the like. Also put oil around the engines. I know I put a LOT. I think its just right, but some might say its too much. Also put a haze of black in random spots to 'dirty it up' a little.

The scratches are way too stark.

Drop their opacity or 'chip' the paint with a faded out shade of the colour you're chipping, mate.

Try to scratch it in areas that would have been scratched too... (walkways for groundcrews, around fuel hatches, engine cowling latches, debris impact etc etc)

Try using a slightly feathered brush for the scratches too. Unless the object doing the scratching was particularly sharp and small the paint would tend to scratch right through in centre and have a few upper layers of paint removed around it.

A feathered brush will give you this effect.

If I try to drop the opacity, I have SO many green layers below the scratches, that the scratch just looks like a green stain. As far as the placement, there really werent ANY visible scratches in my photo, so the only areas I can think of were around the flaps, ailerons, and possible the shoulder join on the wings. The area where the bomb doors pull over the fuselage as well. Should I move them somewhere else?

I think it needs a little work, if you want my opinion. It's definitely better than the first screenshots, but still needs more.

That's a problem. You need to MAKE some detail. You've already done a lot since you said that, but you've got to figure out how to add detail.

I think you've got a nice overall weathering layer (the "dirt" over all the OD) but you might need to blend areas together more smoothly. Like the exhausts behind the engines under the wings. Also there's a block of OD under the tail gun that might need fixing.

Don't forget you can also add oil leaks, gas stains, hydraulic drips/leaks and any other number of stains/drips/messes on the surface.

I'm not saying go overboard or anything, just giving some ideas.

See some of the oil thrown around some engines on this image:
http://liberatorcrew.com/06_B-24/USAF%20Museum/b24J-from%20464th.jpg
(interesting to note: Not all engines leaked the same amount)

EDIT: The de-icing boots on the vertical tails look kind of odd too. They have a strange border/line between the black and the OD.

I don't skin, but I think the panel lines should be somewhat darker.
