I just picked up Company of Heroes and Call of Duty2 from the wal-mart bargain rack. $20 each and well worth the $20.

CoH is a RTS type game while CoD2 is a FPS. I'm not a huge fan of FPS games, but this one was good. I'll be picking up CoD4 shortly.

I came in here ready for a spirited discussion of Matthew Broderick's second finest piece of work.  I guess that DEFCON game is close enough though.

If you like the Naval side of things:

http://www.navalwarfare.org/

and

http://www.harpoonhq.com/

I still fire up the old school harpoon1 now and again. It's kind of EZ mode, but its soothing death therapy for relaxation.

I've been playing Navy Field lately.  It's a ton of fun but quite addicting.

I'd get it, but I cant find it. Wally world only has 2 & 4. I don't go to the mall much so the software stores there may have it, maybe I'll check it out.

Is it worth getting?

Or are you screwing with me and there is really no CoD3?

I am currently finnishing off the US in Uncommon Valor playing as the Japanese.

Had lots of fun with that game.  Swoop will tell you to get the bigger version, name escapes me right now, but it was just too vast for me to be able to get my head around it quickly.

Unlike CoD1 & 2, were you have a health bar, it you're shot too much then your screen goes red. If you don't get shot for a certain amount of time then the screen will return to normal. CoD3 is also the last of the WW2 FPS games in the CoD series (for now anyways :) ). You get to play for 4 different countries (just like in the 1st one but one more): America, British SAS, Canada, and Poland.

Civil War Online (and Napoleonics too) (http://www.distance-simulations.com/cwol.html)

new software for CWOL, I really loved the original, no time to play new one.

BTW these are PBEM type games with software support for orders and such.  But they are a lot of fun if you let yourself get immersed into it.

The only two games that I have constantly had installed on my computer since 1999 is "Aces High (2)" and "The Operational Art of War".

It probably take a special kind of interest to get hooked on that kind of thing, but I used to play strategy board games irl, so this is much the same.
I spent just as much time on designing scenario as I do playing.

Actually, part of the exercise is a civil defense and mobilization exercise.  So yea, civilians do participate.  I'm not sure, but this may be one of the largest recurring civil defense and mobilization exercises in the world.  The Israelis probably do this all the time, but not many other countries practice mobilizing their inactive reserves on this sort of scale every year.  I don't know how many "real" civilians play, but the civil government has a big role and they actively practice what they'd do in the days leading up to a N. Korean invasion, what they'd do early in the war, and what they'd do when/if we "won", specifically with getting humanitarian aid up to the North before everyone starves.  The post-war casualties in the North would likely be about as great as the wartime casualties in the South, if the humanitarian efforts are not immediately effective.  If a potential resurgent Korean war dragged into the winter, it would devastate the population in the North.  We're talking on the order of 50% or greater casualties among N.K. civilians if it's not settled down enough to run massive aid convoys up North.

That's one reason why "the war" hasn't been settled already...  Winning the war isn't the problem.  Winning the peace without killing off a few million NK civilians through starvation would not be easy.

The annual military exercises are a big deal in S. Korea.  Add on the possibility of having a half dozen special forces helos plop down in your backyard at midnight and stay for a day or so, and it can get really interesting for the populace :)

"Uncommon Valor" by far my favorite in the last decade.

LLink -- also at Matrix Games (http://www.digitalriver.com/dr/v2/ec_Main.Entry17C?SID=45905&SP=10023&CID=0&PID=568426&PN=1&V1=568426&CUR=840&DSP=&PGRP=0&ABCODE=&CACHE_ID=0)

Incredibly detailed and accurate look at SW Pacific theater in 42-43. Tracks units down to individual transports and air squadrons, has air/ground/sea integrated very nicely. Depending on your taste, you can adjust the micromanagement required.

Does a great job of letting the tension build with so much in the balance...I'd recommend it to any wargamer with an interest in WW2.

Also have to bring up "Korzun Pocket" -- called by CGW the best hex based wargame of all time. Never played it myself -- anybody tried this one?

Call of Duty 2 was the first CoD to introduce the new damage system. Call of Duty 3 was created for consoles only. So for those of us who enjoyed the WW2 Call of Duty series, it ended with number 2.
