Title: Me262 exhaust effects
Post by: oboe on February 24, 2008, 09:00:25 PM
I did a search on this topic but didn't find anything in this forum.

It would be a great effect if the Me262 trailed a thin stream of exhaust smoke from each engine when under load.  And a nice blurring effect of the air immediately following the exhaust cone.

Indeed.

Not to mention the massive exhaust trail left by the 163

:noid

I suspect both are too much of a FR killer

I don't think it would be as much of an FR problem - Me262s are generally few and far between, compared to bomber groups.

Flying Lightnings for the Headhunters, you get used to your a/c trailing multiple smoke, oil, and/or vapor trails from combat damage.   And I'm talking about an effect that is maybe only 25% of the intensity of those - just enough to hint at the exhaust.

Good idea, Motherland.

With the addition of this feature there should be a check-box 'Exhaust/Con trails On/Off'.

Then the problem would be solved. If your PC can handle your own and others' exhaust/con trails... you turn it on.... If it cannot you simply turn it off.

Similar to the ratos firing on the 234?

I guess this graphic is acceptable maybe something smaller that doesn't leave a massive trail?

I think the slicker two-sprite trail as we had in AH1 would look adequate for the jets.  The Me163 would probably look better with a fluffy-type trail of sprites as we have for all fluid leaks and fire/smoke trails in AH2.

What would be really cool are flame sprites, and some shaders..... Hint hint HT :)   How about some pixel shaders in the higher tier of graphics settings?  Not overdone crap like in eye candy games, but effects as subtle as they are in reality.  Not lego shaped bump mapping but just the right amount so that skinners can really pump up the immersion.
Reflective metal under chipped paint, heatwaves, etc.

Contrails don't time out. They don't go away. They stay there and gradually dissipate [hours later]. They are, in essence, clouds. It's going to just look like every plane has a gas leak if you do it in AH, not like there are really contrails.

The FPS hit would probably come from leaving contrails in the sky for a long enough time period for folks outside of dot range to see the trails and follow them to cons. On top of that al other planes have to create more trails, and even planes flying over their own contrails create MORE contrails.

It gets messy, fast.

Perhaps I should outline it with red boxes next time :lol

Has it occured to you that the jet exhaust would be real hard to model?

HT already models heat effects on the P38's just have a look back left or right on top of the booms.

Hahah, I just looked at the detail slider effects and saw them all at minimum and assumed that was the point of the post.

After I saw that I didn't read on any further.

Also, I think contrails would be a waste but I think that high-g air disturbance wing-trails would be fantastic.

Xasthur, I agree with the high G effects. Although Contrails and heat waves would be neat.:D

Looks like we have another search-policeman on our hands.:noid

Well, that truly shows how much attenion I was paying.

To my brain, far left = minimum and moving right from there = increasing.

Like reading left to right.
