Hi guys,
My old machine that I gave (lent) to my girlfriend, under the condition I could spend quite a bit of cash on a new system last year needs some help.
The card in at the moment is a 256mb 9800XT and the operating system is win 2000. It has developed an odd problem ever since I stuck win 2000 on it where whenever she tries to play the sims or like minded games the graphics do not display correctly. The old XP I had on it worked fine but the thing died and I had to replace the mobo / processor etc.
I have played with the drivers already and whatever ones I try the same result even on bootup the graphic glitch is there but on desktop everything is fine.
I'm thinking on getting a new hard drive and dare i say it stick Vista on it. Is the graphics card in the title of the thread decent enough to have no further issues under vista? All the stuff i have read on the card so far implies that it should be fine. Plus if anyone has this card already are there any power issues?
Specs would look like this
Vista
2 x 1.6 intel duo
1 gig ram (can add more)
x1550 512mb gfxcard,
160gb WD HD.

your 9800 maybe on its deathbed ... ive seen several lose part of there graphic abilitys after overtemp or just age . test it out in dxdiag.

In dxdiag the spinning cube test it shows the dodgy graphics.
I think it is on its deathbed too. Its been great for me, then my brother used it for a few years afterwards, so it wouldnt surprise me.
Im going to sort it out this weekend a new card will be easy £45 without having to play around with anything else. Getting vista, a new HD and the card will be more like £150 which i'm reluctant to pay for something i'm not going to use ;).
Does the x1550 need a huge power supply though? It isn't latest generation but more than enough for her needs so i'm hoping the current PSU will handle it.

No reason to torture yourself with Vista, unless you are a masochist. Windows XP is still supported and even with its warts, it is a far better operating system in terms of performance and stability.

totally agree skuzzy hence my machine will remain vista free for awhile yet :)
However from a learning point of view it would be handy to have it just so that I can keep up to date with the latest operating system. Saying Vista sucks arse isn't going to cut it when people have it in offices everywhere and need help!

You can always help them by wiping out the Vista installation with an XP install. :)
Besides, saying it sucks arse, is stating the obvious.

well spent quite a few hours on saturday and it did turn out to be a fudged old graphics card.
I replaced it with a nvidia 7600gs 512mb AGP card, Bought a new sata HD and stuck XP on it.
Now that machine that i've spent around £300 - $600 on is really quick.
Could run AH quite nicely and of course the bloody Sims on max detail.
