Johnny Depp goes 'Public'
Actor steps up to 'Enemies'
By DIANE GARRETT, MICHAEL FLEMING

Johnny Depp
Depp
Michael Mann and Johnny Depp will make "Public Enemies" for Universal.

Meeting hours before the Hollywood premiere of Depp’s "Sweeney Todd," the director and actor shook hands on a deal that triggers a March 10 start for "Public Enemies" in Chicago.

Drama is set during the great crime wave of 1933-34, when the government’s attempts to stop Depression-era criminal legends such as John Dillilnger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd transformed J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI into the country’s first federal police force. Mann wrote the script, based on Bryan Burrough’s 2004 tome.

Depp will play John Dillinger, considered the most notorious gangster of the era. Mann and his Forward Pass will produce with Kevin Misher and his Misher Films. Tribeca’s Jane Rosenthal will be exec producer.

I don't know. A quick google shows that a lot of people are raving about this casting, but my first thought was -- WTF?

Swishy pirate Dillinger? Crybaby Dillinger? Sweeny-Wonka Dillinger? I just don't see it. But, it might be the first role in which, to me, Depp lives up to his hype if he can pull it off.

Christian Bale will be Purvis.

"people" would rave if Depp starred in a movie about the life and times of Carrot Top.

personally....I think they blew it by not selecting Billy Bob Thorton for the role.

I think Depp might do well. He's been quite good at adapting to totally different kind of characters in his past movies. Sometimes when watching his movie I've wondered if it's really the Depp I knew from another movie.

the appeal and charisma that dillinger had was not from being pretty or metrosexual.    depp can't help but let the metrosexual out.

It is a disapointing choice..  someone like lee marvin in his youth would have been perfect.

Marvin even looked like him back in "The Wild One" days.
Speaking of which, I was in a tobacco shop the other day and there was a young lady, about 20-22 with a Hollister Ca. T shirt on.
I was waiting on my change and she saw me grinning and wanted to know what was so amusing. I told her I was just thinking to myself about her Hollister shirt.
I told her history was made there. I got this blank Duh look. :)

Yeah. It was blown completely out of proportion by the media and the movie "The wild One".

I love this line from your link......................... ....................

Could be worse.
they could have picked the ultimate in over rated actors
Tom Cruise.

Depp I think is pretty versatile.

I've seen him in a few things that kinda surprised me.

Be intersting to see how he pulls it off

Donnie Brasco is a great movie, he plays an undercover cop working for Al Pacinio. While not a really a gangster, good gangster flick.

I certainly do not dislike Depp myself and have enjoyed a number of his roles. In fact, I look forward to seeing Sweeny Todd. Nothing has blown me me away so far though. I do think he's rather full of himself as an "Artiste" but I find his pretensions more amusing than off putting.

Still, the Dillinger angle seems to be a bit off to me.

Speaking of Pacino....does it seem that all of his characters in, oh...the past 10 years, come off the same or similar?  It does to me.

He is very versitile..  so long as he is playing a kind of metrosexual type.

He is about as far removed from dillinger as anyone could be.

It may end up being a good movie but it won't be a good dillinger portrayal.

Yeah, he done a good job in Fear And Loathing, but for Depp it about fits. :)
I`ll also have to say that I was talked into the pirate series of movies under protest as I wasn`t much of a Depp fan.
The swishing seemed to fit also though.
I can`t picture him as Dillinger.

Where did you get this assessment?  I met and got to know Johnny through a friend of mine, Chuck E Weiss, back in the early '90's when I was in LA doing some soundovers for disney.  He is not only a very nice and honest person but one of the most respected character actors in the business.   I would say he is as far away from a metrosexual type as anyone I met out there, but then again if you don't know him,  how would you know what kind of person he is.  Metrosexual? LMAO, that is so funny.  Knowing Johnny, he will emerse himself in every recorded aspect of Dillinger's life until he finds the way to play him as true to John Dillinger himself as possible.

By the way lazs, who would you pick to play Dillinger?

Any pupil of the great Hunter S. is far from a fairy. Depp is a great choice. Although, ascetically,  Bill Bob is spot on, not such a bad actor either.

skyrock.. I have not met the guy and you meeting him a few times does not mean that you know him either.

I am only going by the characters that he plays so far.. it is also his body type.. he has delicate features not course like dillinger.   He moved to france because the US was too mean for him..  Dillinger was not at all like that.

I would say that billy bob would make a better choice as would bruce willis.

When Dillinger was finally tracked down and killed, these are the guns the authorities found inside his hotel room:

Besides the Thompson submachine gun, you will also see two sawed off Browning Automatic Shotguns, and two Winchester Semi-automatic rifles.

Dillinger taunted J. Edgar Hoover repeatedly, mailing him cards, and making collect calls to FBI headquarters to chide him.

By the time of Dillinger's death, Hoover was so extremely obsessed with catching Dillinger, that one third of the FBI's total budget was being devoted to his capture.   It was a man hunt without equal in our nation's history.

I can just imagine the phone call, late at nite:

'Is this the FBI?'

'Please state the nature of your business'

'Hey, tell Bob he couldn't find his butt with both hands using a map'

-dead silence.. followed by a loud 'click' and a dial tone.

-evil grin-

What? Depp, metro?

He's an art-studmuffin if anything and I don't mean that in a disparaging way. He's not metro.

He is a good actor and it should be interesting.

Looking at the guy and his guns...  I would make a better choice than the effeminate depp.

Lots of actors could do it.   Dillinger was an interesting guy but his charm and looks are a serious missmatch for depps looks and charm.

I guess depp will be great for anyone who never knew anything at all about dillinger or the guys he hung out with.

oh.. the thing that looks like a long Luger?  that is a colt woodsman.   A 22.

I can completely imagine Depp with a collection like that.  It's possible that the essence of the characters he's played is not the essence of who he is.  He is, after all... "an actor."

I'm looking forward to seeing him as Dillinger.;)

for once I will have to disagree with you mom...

What men see in the guy may be a lot different than what you see.   He is simply not a good match.

I will listen to you about women tho.. I am often wrong about women.
