Title: Prince Harry is fighting the Taleban in Afghanistan...
Post by: Dowding on February 28, 2008, 11:35:58 AM
It was the subject of a news blackout... until it was leaked on Drudge. Nice one.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/7269743.stm

He's been there for last 10 weeks.

And where exactly are the Bush twins passed out drunk at the moment?

He's just any other soldier, as far as I'm concerned.  No need to put him and his fellow soldiers at risk from some Taliban/Al Qaeda mission to make a point.  Freakin' sensationalist bastages.

Even worse, I think it's more than a bit disrespectful of all the "no-names" who serve everyday without getting recognition.

Bah. Slow news day I guess.

I agree Kamilyun. I'm sure Harry agrees too.

I've never had an image of him as a spoiled brat, maybe a young lad who has been harrassed 1/2 his life about his dead mother, but in no way did I see spoiled brat.

today the BBC ran a interview with Prince Harry at the fromt line.

This tour of duty has changed him in my opinion,he appears to have grown up and treating him normaly seems to have worked better for him.

Why does that matter?  Are you saying the Bush twins are going to inherit a kingdom or something?  That would be interesting.

It wouldn't be that strange.

Lets see it's been Bush, Clinton , Bush and soon to be Clinton again. :D Logically, it'll be a Bush's turn to be president again.

It comes from when one of the princes (can't remember which) went to a haloween party dressed as an SS officer.  Seems harmless enough to me but of course the media and weak of spirit busybodies freaked out.  Demanded apologies, damn near demanded he be hung.

It looked like a good historical costume to me, but some people need things to complain about I guess.

lol

A kid at a school I was at decided to dress up as Hitler one year for Hallowe'en.  Bad move on his part.  He walked across a friend of mine who was a very large and powerful guy whose family had been almost wiped out in the Holocaust.  He picked the kid up by his throat and suggested he go back and change.

Nevertheless, despite that particularly bad decision I totally respect Harry, and all his relatives, for not choosing to hide behind titles and get their hands dirty.

I'll bet he feels better having Gurkahs around.

One of Harry's ancestors was a Nazi and a great friend of Hitler's, BTW.

To be honest, I think Harry and William have had it rough since their mother died. Sure they have money and priviledge, but they have a media circus continually dredging up the whole Diana conspiracy thing - and the recent public inquest was appalling. They've never struck me as spoilt brats.

I'm not surprised he went to Afghanistan just to get away from it.

I have no idea where they are nor am I obsessed with their behavior.

Continuing on with the same kind of bovine scatology, where is the clinton offspring serving? How about any kennedy's. Has any of them served since WW2? This can go on and on but is simply pointless in the extreme.

Well not glad that he is in harms way but that he is willing to be there.

How long has it been since the last leader or major figurehead of a major country has been in battle?

Very Kingly

I went as Adolf Hitler for halloween. Yes Hitler is a bad bad man [whips hitler!!] but I did it just to prove a point that in America, I can dress up like anyone and have a good time. I went to a party and about 80% of everyone loved it and even won best costum. I don't see whats so bad about dressing up as a Nazi or even a bunny. Heck if people take it affensive then I just slap them back and say hey your devil costum affends me b/c the devil wants my soul and live in hell forever!!

News tonight indicated that Harry's tour may be cut short. It seems someone over there blew his cover and now since the press has puked the story up everywhere he's now a "bullet magnet" again.

I wonder if it was a "slip" or a way to get him rotated back early. The news did state that he was out on the lines as an air forward observer calling in air strikes. In his interview he said it was nice just being a regular person for a while. Perhaps the only time he'd ever have that.

I fail to see how Harry would make British soldiers more of a target - the average Teleban is not going to think twice given a chance to shoot an ISAF soldier...it would've been like the german fighter arm only targeting the 445th BG because Jimmy Stewart may have been aboard

I read that a German and Australian paper had the story and ran it.  Then Drudge found it.

Its too bad they decided to run the story.  The prince was serving his country, annonymously as he had so wanted to do.

So it was Drudge whom leaked it? What a bunch of A holes. I give that kid a ton of respect for going over there and being as much of a typical low level grunt as he could realistically be.

Granted they are never going to put him in "the action" but I still think it says a lot about the kid.

Harry's uncle, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, apparently had a habit of placing the Seaking helicopter he piloted in between HM warships and incoming exocet missiles in the Falklands.

You can say what you like about the British Royal family, but they have never shirked on military duty.

Who was that?
Now, not his dad, nor grandparents in the fathers line, and old Lizzie? naahh.

Hmm, so the mother's line? Di's granddad perhaps?
Still, young Harry also has the honor of being quite somewhat related to Hitler's absolute enemy, a guy with a middle name the same as his mothers surname :D

(You all know what I am saying right, and forgive me for mistakes, this is out of memory and I am not British....)

The ancestor in question had chosen to live in Germany prior to WWI. About half way through the Great War, the British royal family changed its name from Saxe-Coburg to Windsor to assuage anti-German sentiment. At this point, this relative was stripped of all his British titles and was effectively stranded in Germany - he fought on the Eastern front to avoid fighting the British.

In the inter-war years, the rise of socialism threatened his German titles (and maybe he lost them, can't remember). He joined the Freikorps and was a big supporter of Hitler's - who promised to re-instate the German nobility. He appeared on quite a few propaganda films and was pretty much used by the Nazis. He was also a key proponent of a brokered peace between Britain and Nazi Germany.

Dowding is referring to Charles Edward Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who was a grandson of Queen Victoria and not strictly speaking an ancestor of the current royal family but rather a somewhat distant cousin.

It used to be not that big a deal.
Most people recognised the difference between doing a parody as a gag and glorifying Nazi ism.
Example Arte Johnson From Rowan and Martains Laugh In
(http://www.rowanandmartinslaughin.com/wolfgang.jpg)

Even Jews did it
(http://personal.maths.surrey.ac.uk/st/P.Williams/ectv04.jpg)

Hell, Brooks even came out with  a Hitler Rap Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu2NqfISm9k&feature=related)

Everyone saw the goof for what it was. A goof.

But that was before everyone decided it was ok to start whining about everything.
I am convinced people will actually look for reasons to "be offended" in our politically correct word. because deep down. Many people desire to be wetnursed and pandered to.

Now we are damned near fearful over doing anything because there might be a chance of "offending" someone.

Which as Arte Johnson would say is

"Verry interesting...But STUPID"

I shouldn't have made any snap-judgements about little Harry. After seeing several posts here, I actually looked at some of the work he's done over the past years (especially in Africa) instead of keeping my previous assumptions. Quite impressive indeed. :aok    :aok    :aok

You know I really hate the media and how they just love to follow people around to get a story so they can make big bucks. If I was over there and saw all those media people standing around Harry, I would walk over there and punch every single one of those reporters and tell them to the F@#$ off the battlefield! Then when Harry goes to the front lines and those reporters have to stay back I'll follow those reporters with a big sign for the Taliban thats reads "Targets of Opertunity"
