I had a sleep study that assured me I didnt have sleep apnea. But I do snore a bit. Since that study a year ago, I bought a new bed and my work hours improved...and life improved.
But man, this week, I sleep, toss-turn-toss-turn...and all day long I am just dragging. Working 3 nights a week makes this tough...but there is nothing I hate more than having a day off, slept good and STILL be dragging all day.
Me needs deep, REM sleep!
Anyone else deal with this kinda daytime sleepiness from time to time?

Yes...but I have cats..and a wife who loves them.

I work late nights and from time to time my sleep pattern gets outta whack. I had nose surgery to fix a deviated septum about two years ago and it helped tremendously cause it did effect my breathing during sleep. Before then and even now though I find I still get a fluctuation in my sleep.
I found the best thing that helps me is just taking some melatonin. Can be found in the vitamins section at the store if you havent already tried it. Your body makes it natural at night while your asleep, but my doc told me that there was a study awhile back that showed folks who worked late nights or grave yard shifts had a defficiancy in this chemical and it effected their sleep patter. I take it for about two- three nights in a row and I may not need it again for a good while.

All the time...probably due to my work schedule...2 10 hour days, 2 14 hour nights, 4 days off (first day off I actually get off work at 8am from the previous night).
-
Im tried melatonin with no real results...asides some really odd dreamery. I may pop some Friday AM when I go to sleep.
The funny thing is I've managed to make sure I get a good amount of rest, even with the Thur/Fri/Sat night shifts. Right now Im in the midst of changing my hours and one of my best friend's 23 month old daughter died in her sleep Sunday (autopsy found no obvious reasons, waiting for blood results).
So stress may be a good part of this for me.
I hope to be a day person again in about a month. And I cant wait. After 4 years of 2nd and 3rd shift work, I took "normal" hours...and sleep...for granted.

Sounds like stress to me.
I used to work weird hours, but always had the rule that whenever I was tired (not at work), I would sleep. If that meant I went to bed at 4 pm and missed dinner and evening socializing, so be it. Taking care of myself was most important. Maybe your wife or girlfriend wouldn't go along with that. But worked for me at the time.
More recently, stress from a job search has gotten the better of me. Dragging and no motivation to do anything but the most basic tasks during the day. Restless and worried at night. Toss and turn.
Melatonin worked for 5 days tops. Switched to Benadryl, generally works, but starting up in the AM is tough. Had some left over codeine cough syrup from a cold I had. I take 1/2 a dose (= 1/2 teaspoon) every night. Works. Wake up not feeling drowsy and ready to go.
Maybe get some prescription sleep aid? It's what I plan on doing once I use up all the cough syrup! :D

Maker's Mark always works for me.
I drink, I pass out and I don't care how loud I snore.

The nice thing about sleeping days is, like RPM said, I can snore away without complaint :) It must not be too bad, I usually wake up with 2 or 3 cats still in the room, snoozing too.
And I have the bed (queen size) all to myself. I really think its time for a king. My girlfriend sleeps like a skydiving accident :)
My Dr suggested avoiding the sleep meds, asides limited use of things like Advil PM. Just one usually puts me to sleep and keeps me there thru the night. Anything stronger, as you posted, results in the morning hangover...which is what I feel like I have all day as it is

I tend to stop breathing while sleeping... wifey kicks, pulls and slaps me to get me breathin again. I have to take her word for it...but I think she is seeing how far she can actully get that Life Insurance Policy...the one I cancelled years ago.
Is it normal for a woman to sleep with knives, stopwatch and a phone?

I seem to wake up at 4.30am every morning these days. Then my mind starts to mull over the various things I need to get done and I am in and out of sleep until I get up at 6.00am.
Very definately stress related.

I believe that you've been screweing with your circadian rhythms.
All animals are wired for a set sleep/wake pattern. Rotating shifts really bung up the bio clock.

If you stop breathing while sleeping, you need to see a doctor. Good chance you have sleep apnea.

It sounds like something I had years ago, LePaul. I was 35 then. I gave up drinking coffee (I was drinking about 2 cups in the morning, 3 cups in the afternoon then) and started excercising more. Sounds strange, but I wake up better in the morning without the coffee now. In the afternoon when that "drowsy" time hits, I have a cup of tea (and a rare cup of coffee). I sleep very fit.
:aok

The coffee is on the decline here, I used to sip it all day way back when. Now, a medium cup at work then all green tea.

Myself and Mr. Pain hang out together every night. We take it where we can get it. An hour or two here, an hour or two there.
On the rare occasions I make it to 5:30 or so I feel like Rip Van Winkle. Even at that, as mentioned above, it is usually when Who Hit John has came into play pretty heavy.
Some days it`s dynamite , some is more like a defective blasting cap, but it`s all good.
The alternative doesn`t appeal to me.

Either that or she's making good use of her pillow.
Seriously, you should get a sleep study.

For over 25 years, I have used a fan for "white noise" and the fact that I sleep better when It's cooler.

Got to agree on this one. A stable sleep schedule = a better sleep. It takes about 3 weeks to really adapt to a change in your rythm of more than about 3 hours. I hated rotating shifts when I was a rookie. Every 3 months a new schedule / days off and trying to sleep during the day was almost impossible for me.

Working the nights will **** you right up.
I work mostly nights but I work one day a week and that throws me right off. I spend half the week catching up after that.
If it's causing you that much grief quit your job. No money is worth the torment of sleeplessness.
-
Try this one, 6 10 hour days on 4.5 off 7 12 hour nights on 3.5 off and all the time their asking for volanteers for overtime on your days off.:huh
-
Seriously LePaul, cats have been the reason for many people's sleep disorders. They are just annoying enough to keep you from getting the sleep you need. Keep them out of the bedroom.
-
I'll do that...punt the felines.
See I got great sleep today...the breath-rite nose strips seem to help. And I even did the melatonin. Its just the "wake up from the fog" thing that seems to take forever (longer if you notice it!).
Lots of good input, I'm glad I posted
