Over the past 6 or 7 months 5point has been collection model airplanes. Everytime we go to wal-mart we have to run to the toy section to see if they have any new ones. I thought I would post pics of the ones we have now and see if you guys have any. We have about 3 more that we have to put together and 2 small ones also that are 1:100 scale size but cant get them to look right with the camera.
Here are the ones we pics of. We have a total of 12 model planes..

Thats just way to clean.Get some burnt umber and turpentude and make a wash to dirty up those panel lines for cod's sake.
The horror.Oh the horror.
-
we just laid that flooring on sat and we did it wrong we are going to take it all up and do it again. If your so worried about the lines why dont you come over and make your little mixture and do it yourself. I dont see me walking around my house in a maid outfit cleaning and doing everything. Your more than welcome to swing by and do it if you'd like.

lol... zooom!
He's talking bout the models. :lol
-
I saw those at Walmart too, I picked up a 109-G6.
Wish they would have had those toys when I was a kid... :(
-
Hey, MsB, I think Dea was talkin about the planes, not the floor :lol ... they need to look used and beatup...
-
:rofl I wasnt even looking at the floor.I was refering to the planes being to clean.I like to dirty em up a bit.Dirt in the wing panels and such.Grease on the wheels and all that just been used in combat stuff.Gives em character but bt all means, you bought em and you can display em anyway you prefer. Its just alot of fun to give em a used look.:aok

Good start, but they need weathering and proper highlighting no matter what. That's just part of modelling in general.
Highlighting, as its most basic, is fading the colors and making the edges brighter and shinier. It adds definition, and there's multiple techniques for doing it.
The quick way is "dry-brushing". For example, if you wanted to do the edges of your bombs, you'd paint them a darker metal color. Then, with your lighter color, get a bit on the end of your brush, and wipe most of it off on a napkin. Now lightly brush that over the surfaces. The paint will stick the the edges and brighten them up.
Highlighting by hand is very, very time consuming. It involves anywhere from 3 to 102983213 shades between the colors and requires an exceptionally steady hand. For my generic troops in warhammer 40k armies, I tend to do 7 shades, and 15 shades for leaders... but those are for competition and affect tournament point scores. I'm not very good at it :(
Inking is a "cheater" method imho, but it works. It's literally an ink, so make sure you cut it with water, then simply "wash" it over the model. The ink well settle in crevices, dry, and darken them up nicely. The downside is that sometimes it turns out too shiny (at least for my liking).
Black-lining would really make the colors pop and be a beautiful model, but you lose a bit of the realism. That, imho, is better for personell instead of vehicles, but I've seen it done before.
Weathering just makes stuff look used. I prefer mine in parade ground appearance, but iirc, a good technique is to use wall spackle mixed with brown paint. This gives a nice "mud" you can apply with a brush. Running your thumb over a toothbrush loaded with it can give you some really nice spray patterns.
Try this site. (http://www.dakkadakka.com) It's actually for miniature wargaming models, but the methods and techniques for painting vehicles are the exact same.
This is *not* my work, but it helps give the idea. Look at the skull on top of his banner pole. That's good highlighting between just 2 colors ("bone white" & some shade of brown.. forgot what its called), and then highlighted again with a touch of white. The results can be fantastic with a bit of practice.

Yeah Yeah, but I bet it's one o them French Maid Outfits tho. :lol

Oh LOL i thought you were talking about the floor. I never knew that you could do that kind of stuff to model planes. When you said turpentude i thought that was some kind of floor cleaner. LOL.. whoops.. Oh well i just wanted to post them and see if you guys had anything.
DieAz Your the reason not alot of girls play this game..

For future reference, you should display all your models on a clothes dryer.

because I laughed?
or said sorry?
or maybe some other reason?
please do tell. why am I the reason?
-
well it seemed to me that you made it sound like a girl cant post on here by the way you said "woman post comments and pics of planes, and thinks he is talking about the floor" like i said b4 i didnt know you could do that kinda of stuff to planes.
-
Very nice work on the models, very nice.
I like both immaculate models and those "weathered" to look a little war weary. Both styles can be appreciated for excellence in modeling, and the beauty of the aircraft design.
-
lol, you are one word off with that quote.
that one word can mean a big difference in how something is perceived.
the reason I was laughing so hard is in ( ). (usually, women sees things different than men do.)
or as Dux said "zooom!" {not going to explain that one}
you can post all you want.
I never said anyone couldn't post.
this is HTC's house and is their say on, who is welcomed or not.
by the way, welcome to AH.
:p don't get :furious , I am just :t sometimes. :aok

Nice looking planes. Thanks for sharing. It makes me want to finish that 190 thats been sitting in my closet for a couple years waiting for that perfect paint job.
-
its okay, i now get what you were talking about and when i told 5point about this today he had no idea either you could make the model planes look old. so sorry. and thanks for the welcome
-
I've got the mustang and I've been looking at the bubble top jug. I've also got a B stang in a smaller scale. These are made by Corgi and come fully detailed. For lazy people like myself they are perfect.
-
I didn't know that you're "supposed" to give them the battered look. I've got nothing but sons. I always harass them because their models look like crap after being tossed around, "flown" into the grass, off of the roof, into the dogs, through entryways & into bookshelves, through the ceiling fan.
Who knew!?!

That laminate looks awesome.

There is a person here who builds model aircraft a lot.
He always posts photos of the models on top of his washing machine. People complain that the models don't look 'right' if he doesn't photograph them on his washing machine.
It's an inside joke.
Those models look cool, I haven't seen anything of that quality in Australia... I just make my own instead.
-
Txmom,
Do your kids hang the models from the ceiling? I did that when I built models as a kid. I had 3 corners set up in 3 different eras of flight. WW1, WW2 and Korea. They were set in different angles as if in a dogfight. At least until my little sister got in my room with a pair of scissors.

Nope, they sure don't. Any time that my kids build the models, they're strictly for play-time... not at all for display. Someday they may get to the point where they display them... for now they're still playing with them :)

Ive seen the large toy airplanes at WalMart around the holidays.
I confess...the German-marked F-104G was too cool to pass up :)

It's Pipz :D

One thing about weathering, most folks go off the deep end overdoing it.
When I was in, the planes looked a little dirty sometimes real dirt magnet...the F4 Phantom>, but they would be washed and painted
regularly.
Some birds, like the Japanese ones stuck out on the islands for years,
could get pretty grimy. But most ground crew takes too much pride in their
birds to let it go as much as alot here seem to think.

Before I tow a plane at Morristown, I'm supposed to do a walk around and note
any damage to the bird before it moves. I swear there are some that come in
where it's easier to note where it ISN'T dinged up :lol

Since I don't seem to have the time for assembling plastic anymore, I've
switched to collecting diecast. Here is one that CorkyJr turned me onto
from Eagles International...a 1/48th scale Lee Archer bird Ina the Macon Belle.

Rino's a diecast fanatic. My first 38 came via Glenn. Conned me into 1/72nd P47s now to go with 15 Armour 1/48th scale 38s, including 2 80th Headhunter birds :)
Got two Eagles International 4th FG Mustang too and a couple of Corgi 1/72nd birds (Spit V and Hurri ) that I got for doing the profiles for them.
Diecast birds are addicting, and I'm an old model builder from way back.

My bedroom when I was 15 looked like the Battle of Britain...
Planes with holes in them, some with flames, some smokin, diving in a death spin minus a wing... all hanging from the ceiling with fishin line.
Had the ceiling painted blue with clouds and puff ack.
It was my room. Loved it.

I'm 36 and I have been known to hold a model at arm's length and make 'Vroom...dakka dakka dakka' sounds to this very day ;)

I had an awesome MIG25 model I made when I was in primary school (grade school for you yanks:lol), it was so good I thought it could actually fly so I cut out holes in the tailpipes for a pair of rocket motors from the local hobby shop. Lets just say it was a spectacular lesson in the mechanics of weight and balance.
I also had an awesome TigerII model that I later motorised and R/C'ed.
There were many others, but those two really stand out.

er ..
..as far as I know 'modeling' is not the process of buying something to look at.
Nice planes tho :)

When I was in the AF, I used to build alot of model aircraft. Most of
them were weird ones like the Saab J21 or MS 406s. I ended up with
72 models taped to the concrete ceiling of my dorm room. I guess it was
a bit unusual because they asked me if it was "ok" if Gen Creech inspected
the room. Since he had 4 stars and I had 2 stripes, I thought it would be
ok
About 6 months later, the pride of my fleet
decided to depart the ceiling and auger. This event got me fed up enough
to invite my roomie to a day out in the swamps of Georgia shooting
plastic models with .22 rifles. A good time was had, and it was better than
just tossing em in the trash :D
