Title: Engine Fires.....
Post by: Hazard69 on March 07, 2008, 08:26:49 AM
I would love to see engine fires modeled in the game. I believe they were far more common than fuel tank fires. Would like to see the tank fires become less frequent (and engine fires more frequent), except for aircraft like the zeke, which would be easy to ignite.
I think we also have the tools required. Visually relocate the inferno we see on our wings to our engines. Simulate it just like a radiator hit. Engine temp rises at a very rapid rate and will eventually kill the engine. If left uncorrected fire would spread and result in a fuel tank fire or in case of forward engines perhaps a pilot wound?
Corrective action required would be to kill engine on fire (cut off fuel supply). High air speeds (I'm thinking maybe over 200mph) sustained for maybe 15 sec would stop the blaze only if engine was shut down. For aircraft which had fire extinguishers, maybe we can even add a bottle discharge option?
Just my 2 cents... :)

waits for the people to whine about frame rate, and others saying it would be too complex to code...

Sounds cool. What about climbing to a higher alt? Would that help extinguish the fire?

Engine fires would be great, atleast one could shut it down and feather the prop then have a chance (dare I say it...Actually have fire supression equipment).  Rather than oh look my self sealing fuel tank is burning...BOOM!  :aok

If bombers were igniting at 30,000, I doubt it.

It would suck on frame rates, and probably be to complex to code.....

But I LIKE it     :rock :rock

I always thought it was an engine fire as thats where I see the flames coming from.  I feel kinda silly now.

Expanding the fire thought a little....... if you get a bomber fuselage on fire, shouldnt its ordinance go BOOM if not dropped immediately.  :D

No really most High Explosive needs to be subjected to the heat for a while before detonating. Could be anywhere from a minute to 10 minutes depending on how hot the fire gets. But dropping the ords would be a good idea in that situation.
