1. I drive home on the interstate after work and set my cruise control for 65-ish.... all the way.
2. I went to the Post Office to start service at our new factory, the supervisor wrote the addy down on a piece of scratch paper and said it's done. WTF? He just trusted me?
3. All of my neighbors including the guy who has to walk across his 3 acres to my back fence have come over to say hi and ask how we were doing. I had neighbors in California for 10 years and didn't know what they looked like.
4. Yesterday my wife and I watched a group of kids riding their horses in the pastures behind our house. One was bucked off, the horse took off at a gallop. The kid just got up, went and retrieved the horse and started over again. Not one lawyer was contacted to my knowledge.

3% unemployment rate, tied for best in the nation as of last January. That's pretty nice.

Uh oh i'm seeing a potential potato farmer here. :rofl

Northern Idaho and western Montana is the most beautiful region of the country. The schools are good and the people seem to be naturally smarter and better spoken than average americans. Also shockingly courteous if you are used to living in other parts, it's almost like a different country. The least racists part of the country, although they do have some wacko supremecy sects who moved there from elsewhere. The vast majority of people there are disgusted by this but respect other's freedoms. A constitutionalist mindset is prevelant, libertarian types. Very low incedence of crime. But it's a pretty boring place if you are young and single. I grew up in that area, western montana, did my skying and most of my partying in idaho. Even a couple of highschool girlfriends lived in idaho. The fence at one of my best friend's houses was the state line. Great place if you are married with kids and you like the outdoors.
BTW, what part of Idaho?

Amazing how "nice" the world is when you escape the confines of Kalifornia, isn't it?

That's awesome MT. When did you move there? That's just the kind of place I'd love to live.

Its also where Duane Beeson was from, buku points in my book...

Near Boise
Ah, that part of the state is pretty skanky. You should move up into the panhandle. You're in Napeleon Dynamite country down there.
-
Boise is far from being the most scenic from Idao. Anyway, I fly to Boise quite often, PM me if you wish to bring your kids for "cockpit pictures" in my plane. I can arrange that.
I noticed a uge change in behavior with people even in places like SLC compared to L.A./Houston/Miami. It's also amazing to me to show up at the DMV in Pocatello ... not wait in line ... and having someone actually filling the forms for you while explaining stuff.
-
And if the car behind you flashes his lights it just means he want's to pass you, so move over a bit.

Howdy neighbor. Just moved to Meridian a week ago.

I was stationed at Mountain Home AFB, and just loved Idaho. Unfortunately I was not able to find a job at all when I got out, so had to move. I hear the job situation has taken a very large turn for the better since then (1984).
If it wasn't for the wife wanting to be closer to her family, I would be looking to move back, for sure.
I agree about folks being a lot friendlier up that way, and there was also a much slower pace of life when I was there, a lot less stress.
I really liked running around in the mountains when I had the chance, but I personally think the flats have their own beauty, just different. Not a big trip to get to the mountains from the Boise area, and for a big city, it wasn't bad, especially compared to L.A. and such.

Was wondering how the move went. Welcome to God's country. I'm in South Nampa. I say South Nampa, cause North Nampa is kinda crummy. Meridian is very nice.

I liked Idaho, for the most part. I did find that it gets nicer the farther you get from I-80.
-
I also enjoyed my tour at Mt Home. Idaho is nice. Boise had a teenager meth problem a decade or so ago, not sure if it recurred.
-
Far out!
-
Thanks for the invite Frenchy, but my kids are probably your age. I've lived here since just after Christmas Nuke, been commuting from California since the summer.
-
Well MT, I envy you.
I have been looking to move someplace more out of the way and quiet as well.

Welcome to Idaho, MT! :)
I love Idaho. Pocatello is a beautiful city. Ditto for many, many other cities in Idaho. My family and I were going to move to Pocatello when I was offered a job in Cheyenne, Wyoming. We intended to stay in Cheyenne for 2 years, then complete the move to Idaho. We are still here after almost 6 years. Wyoming is much the same way as Idaho. Friendly, courteous people, less stress, clean air, access to the Rockies (Cascades closest for you). Just a better lifestyle all the way around.
The Cascades are beautiful! The Tetons are beautiful! The lakes in northern Idaho are beautiful! My family vacationed about 6 months ago. Went through Jackson Hole, Yellowstone, across the panhandle of Idaho to Wenachee and Leavenworth (you have to visit there sometime), through the Cascades up to Bellingham, Washington. Came back through Boise, dipped down into Utah, up to Pocatello, and back to Cheyenne.
Congrats to you and your family all the best. Enjoy!

GOOD THINGS ABOUT IDAHO:
* Speed Limit for many of the major highways there is 75 MPH. You can set your cruise control to 80 MPH, and not be worried about being pulled over. I know, as I did that twice across the state last summer.
* Great hunting and shooting opportunities. Lots of places to go hunting all sorts of game. Gun laws are very friendly to gun owners.
* The State is very financially sound. Both houses of the state legislature are controlled by Republicans, as is the Governorship.
* Housing is very affordable. You can buy a big gorgeous home for under $200,000. I am talking a really nice home too, over 2,000 sq ft in size.
Here is a one year old 2,200 sq ft custom home that I looked at last summer there, that was just under $200,000:

The fully fenced and landscaped backyard was huge:

It had great RV parking:

Kitchen was absolutely gorgeous:

As was the Master Bedroom's Bathroom:

BAD THINGS ABOUT IDAHO:
* Snow and pretty doggone cold weather in winter
* High Taxes -- State has both income and sales taxes. The sales tax is even applied to the purchase of all food and groceries, which even the People's Republic of California does not tax. There are also no laws limiting increases on your property taxes either, like there are in some other states.
* There are virtually no minorities living there, especially in the more rural areas. The only city where I saw a few black people was Boise. I went to a Triathlon Competition in Idaho Falls, and every single contestant and person in the crowd watching were all white!!! Yikes, I thought that I had been time transported back to the '50's!! :O :O :O

I know a lot of people who live in Idaho.. they are friendly and mind their own business and have a big libertarian streak but...
their are a lot of very fundamental religious types. there is also a lot of racism in the rank and file unless you live very close to boise and resentment for people who come from other states...particularly kalifornia.. for good reason.. the things that kalifornians moved away for are the very same things that they try to change Idaho into. Most kalifornians can't wait to change Idaho into the same crap they escaped from.
The unemployment rate is low but so is the normal wage. truck drivers making $12 an hour and such.
I know what you mean about kalifornia neighbors tho.. and I am glad.. the best neighbor you can have in kalifornia is the one who you don't even know his or her name after 5 years.

I lived in Coeur d'Alene during a little incident now known as Ruby Ridge and during the height of the aryan nations complex in Haden Lake. Even saw one of those Nazi's in 7-11 in full uniform and holstered sidearm. Interesting times to say the least.
Aside from that, the Panhandle is one of the most beautiful places on earth. I used to go fishing on Spirit Lake and stay at my in-laws cabin there. You've definitely upgraded from Kali MT, that's for sure.
Heck, sometimes I even miss digging the car out of the driveway from 18" of new snow overnight.
-
Another bonus about Idaho is the plethora of hot springs. Plenty of opportuities to take a multi day hike in to the fishing spot and soak the ole bones in a natural hot tub the wilderness.
-
*little bit* jealous :) :aok

This was even kind of fun ...

Hi
All of of us here in Idaho need to find some place to get together for a beer or 2... maybe 20.
I am in Boise...
-
The Army sent me TDY to Pocatello 3 times. I thought it was pretty boring the first time. Once I had some wheels with me the second time I found out how nice it was. I flew myself the third time and beat the folks who went commercial by 2 hours. Not bad but then again I scheduled the layovers.
I loved the little Italian restaurant not far from the college. They had some fantastic homemade salad dressing there that they bottled and sold locally. I have no idea if that place is still there but sometime I plan to drop by the town again and see how it has changed.
Outstanding hot springs not far out of town too.

I was in Coeur D'alene monday, in Pocatello all this week.
