Title: Please register my whine- I'm bored.
Post by: toonces3 on March 10, 2008, 12:42:17 PM
Hi all.
I'm coming up on a year online here (or maybe I've been on a year now- it's gotta be close).

I'm finding myself searching for reasons to stick around.  Why?  Because I am utterly bored with the gameplay.

For a while the complete newness of the game had me hooked.  Then, for the last few months I've been enjoying the game more for the folks I fly with on my squad than actually 'playing' the game.  But, unfortunately, real life has robbed me of my squad mates and more and more I find myself logging on, checking the .sr and if nobody's on I just log off and play Il-2 or Silent Hunter 4 or something.

I want to play the game- I've already paid the money so it's not costing me anything more to stay logged on and play, but the experience feels empty anymore.  Up, fly around, look for a fight, hope I don't get HO'd right off the bat, land, rinse, repeat.  There doesn't seem to be any driving reason to up again- there's no goal to be obtained, no purpose to the fight besides the fight.

I guess I see folks on here that have been playing since AW and I wonder what's kept you online for so long.  I think I'll be more of a combat tour guy, where I have a goal to which to work, but until then, I'm just finding myself sort of rudderless in the game, and not sure why I don't find it fun like everyone else.

Thanks for registering my whine, and any comments are welcome.

JADed in ONE year. Oh the inhumanity of short attention spans.... :cry  :uhoh :rock :pray :salute :devil

Lets see.....1987-88 my roomate is on his 8086XT dialed up to something with his very first mouse installed. He has to go to the bathroom. Here hold the mouse and keep that funny cross shaped thing going that away he says. As he runs out the room I yell....whats a mouse? Untill 1993 I borrowed his account and computer when he goes out. He was with the Damnd (slidr). I got my own PC with the release of AW2 and stopped playing AW in 1999. Picked up AH in 2003.

The importance of hardware and dialup connections in those dark old days...... :pray

Sooooooo.......how has it come to you burning out after ONE year young cartoon killer? This is flight SIM nirvana. Guess age and perspective has many advantages........ :rock

3 things in my opinion keep me coming back day after day, year after year.

1 Challenge, perhaps its time to master a different aircraft or style of fighting?
Or a totally different side of gameplay? Or perhaps switch from pure furball mode to more of a tactical game.
There is a lot to learn, always new experiences to seek out.

2 The company that you keep. I'll admit, I've been very very lucky. I have been flying with some of the same guys since  1996, and they keep me coming back. Meantime there are new guys constantly joining, new faces to put behind the names.  When my computer died back at Thanksgiving time, I couldn't replace it, just did not have the money. My squad mates put together a paypal acct, and chipped into it, how many, I don't know. But it had to have been quite a few, because it was enough to build a new system from scratch. How can I ever repay that? Well for starters, by being here, being ready to help anyone of those guys at the drop of a hat. Our squadron motto has come to be "A place where strangers become friends, and friends become brothers". I have 2 real brothers and a sister, and none of them have ever really understood me. Everyone of my squad mates knows the real me better than my family.  Take the time to find a squadron that truly fits, and remember, you get out of it in direct proportion to what you put into it.

3 Giving back to the game and the community. Different people do this in many many different ways.
Start by just being a good member of the community. Watch what you say, and who you say it too, and how you say it. Then gently nudge others in the same direction.  Give everyone you meet a little respect and courtesy, someday it will all come back to you.  Find something to immerse yourself in that helps the community.

CM crew is I believe always looking for good SOLID community members who are looking to give something back. Skins and terrains are another prime spot. Just a matter of time, learning the required skills and doing the work. There are ways I'm sure have not been thought of or invented yet. So, take a look, what can you find that fits what you have to give?

you should try out FSO's and AvA if you dont already, very fun and differnt then a regular sortie in the MA IMO. :devil

Sometimes when I log on and look at the map I have the same feeling.  What's the point.  It looks like it's going to be the same old same old.  But then I get up for that first sortie and the next thing you know I'm hooked for at least an hour or two.

It's kind of like going on a business trip.  While your packing you're thinking "I don't want to do this", but once you're in the air you're like "Cool, I get to get away for a while".

BTW, becoming a score-potato there for a while helped me out.  At least each night I had a purpose and that was to improve whichever of my stats were lagging.  I also keep 6 months of data on all the planes I have flown and keep a list nearby of those that I'm behind the arena average K/D in or that I'm behind a two month average of total kills plus deaths in (of all planes that I've flown... it happens to be 11 kills plus deaths right now across 66 planes and vehicles).  So when I'm bored, I grab my little list, pick a plane off of it that either I need to improve in or that I need to fly to keep it on my active list and go see what I can do in it.  At least chasing my score and chasing my plane lists gives me a sense of purpose when I need it and if I'm successful it's very gratifying.

Find another Squad.... that'll probably fix it. Always enjoyable flying with friends.

By the way.... that is no whine.... just a call for help. You'll be ok.

I'd say take a break, maybe a week.  Then watch a good WWII flying movie (your choice) or maybe Dogfights on the History Channel, maybe pick up a book on the subject or build a model of a plane you would like to fly. Don't come back early, pick a date to come back on and stick to it, you'll end up missing the action and will appreciate it more when you are back.  :salute

Either take a break (spring is coming up, with lots more to do outside rather than sit and get fat infront of a PC) or start to try different parts of the game. I started playing in late 2000 and have taken quite a few short breaks, several long breaks of which im still sorta on and have always turned first to doing different things other than flying a fighter before I take a break.

When you put yourself in a GV rather than in a fighter you are playing with a whole new set of players than  you were flying in a fighter. Its not the same game down on the ground as it is up in the air, for the most part. Sure you are still trying to take the same bases and some times you are "communicating" with planes in the air but for the most part, those other guys/gals in the GV's around you are the ones who you are playing the game with. Thus you get to meet new people/make new friends/enemies... whatever you want to call it. You get my point. Same can be said for flying buffs rather than fighters only to a lesser extent.

Lastly, fly in a different arena. I think now we are at two dozen or so MA's. Pick the early war MA and fly there for a change. Axis/Allies... You get the point. Mix it up.

Freelance, switch around, make new friends, find a good bunch to squad up with.

I used to set game related goals for myself to keep it interesting, but after like 12 years, that has run its course.  The friends I have made and the community keep it interesting and is what keeps me around.  What I've found for me, is that I have a sort of burn out cycle.  So, I pace myself and never force myself to play, or over do it...and I always come back even if it takes weeks until the urge hits me again.

Like ghost said, giving back to the community itself opens up an aspect of making it interesting.

try EVERYTHING in the game.

Furball
Toolshed
GV
meet people

theres SO MUCH to do... how can you get bored so fast?

i must admit i felt the same when my first squad VMF323/RAF1st died off and i was lone ranging... i took a year off, checking on a few times, then come back. Bumped into Serenity who dragged me into his 303rd bomber group for a few month, Then my dad had a heart attack and i got banned from forums, so i left again... a month later i rejoined (im addited) and bumped into biggles... and ive enjoyed a whole year with the 71st squad, the greatest squad ever.

so basically thats it... try and MEET some new people if your current squad is dying, hell be a country potato for a while, switching sides to meet the other guys out there. lately due to other things in RL if i log on and theres no 71st guys on id leave and do something else as part of the fun is being with those guys... Those guys, get me away from RL issues and cheer me up without even trying!

Reminds me of other MMOs where people burn through and max out their levels within a few days and then cry that there is nothing left to do.

yeah, you get so hyped up about a new game you play it constantly for a few weels before getting bored...

i must admit i sometimes play this 80-100 hours a month, but do also drop as low as 10-20... it totally depends on real life. This is the ONLY game i play at the moment... hell its the only reason i own a PC lately.

I'm in it for the friends I've known for more years than I have toes (got em all btw) and all the ones I haven't met yet.

Game is nothing more than an bar with a chair perfectly formed to my butt.  Most faces hang around, occasionally we lose "Bob" or "George", often some new guys walks in and buys a round, but the foundation of the hangout remains the same.  Once in a while, every 2 weeks or so, Dale tries a new beer on tap.  Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's sour, but you roll with it, cause Dale Tries.

Alot of the young ones come in, hang out a bit and decide they don't quite like the music or the fact that there isn't enough bubbles in the pit or strobe lights, and run off to find some quirky fad type club, bashing us old fogies on the way out.  It's ok, we were all there.  They will find the fancy places change ownership, and flashy lightbulbs, more to keep up with the next fad than to keep their customers content.  They will grow out of it, we did.

We won't miss em when they leave, heck, we won't remember their names, but a few will stick around and grow on us.

Those are who we are here for.  Those that want a home, those that want stability, those that their wifes know, and kids know.  Those who think it's great when HB555 comes to town because Dad talks about him and Easyscor at the Collins foundation air show.  Dad's happy, life is good.

Bored?  Your trying to hard kid.  Have a seat and look at what's around you.  With luck, it'll be here a long time from now, the resistance to instant gratification and fad is too strong in this group.  It's not out of stubbornness, it's out of experience.

Now, you say you are bored because your squad has moved on.  All what, 12 of them?  There are Thousands of people out there.  Trust me, not one of them are logging in to entertain you.  That's not our problem to solve.  But, feel free to hang out, see what a single year cannot, will not ever show you.

Toonces,

I've thought you been around longer than a year. Sure seems like it to me. Anyway, I've been in the same boat you are on (Figuritively). I would come on and no one would be on. Flying alone day after day. One day I just said this is enough and joined another squad. It's been great since. I always say I never left my squad, they left me. All the suggestions given are very good suggestions. Try out the AvA and the FSO. Try new plane types, try impossible missions, try to think of something that no one would ever consider. And if need be, there's nothing wrong in taking a break. Done that too.

Good luck!

well, sir..one cure is to make your own missions.....or if you don't want to join a new squad, then find one to fly with......there's lots that'll have a good stick without mking him join. if you're just looking for a fight, fly lower(i remember a night that i think it was you in a mosie at about 18k or so..and i know the alt because i was at about 14k in my JU's).......but from what i've seen, you're a dam good stick, and most likely don't need all that alt......fly down low.....5k and below.....tons of fun fights there as talked about in another thread..........or go to DA......if i can get my azzz back into the game, i think i might try that a bit to avoid the HOtards...or to learn to better avoid them in the MA's....but no matter how ya cut it, there's sooooo many ways to make your own fun in here. one of my favorites(when i'm bored and don't feel like flying a fighter) is to take lancs......climb out to about 14 or 15k alt......then just plan a route, and drop the dar on each enemy field you cross. sounds childish, and probably is, but it's fun when a coupel try to climb to ya as you're doing it....then they ALWAYS attack from your 6 low, right up untill you remove very important parts of their aircraft for them.
anyway, stick with us dude!!!!! you're one of the nicer guys i've dealt with in here.......can't afford to lose you from this game sir!!!!

Thanks for the replies.

I had started to post this before, but ran out of time before I could complete it.  I appreciate the sentiments, but I'm not interested in joining a new squad just now.  I really enjoy flying with Stoney and the rest of the gang.  While joining up with another crew might be a solution of sorts, I don't think it's the one I'm looking for.  Knowing Stoney and the 348th was out there having fun without me...it would be like breaking up with my girlfriend or something and then being jealous when she started dating someone else!   :rofl

[edit: major whine paragraph deleted]

But maybe it's really like ROC says.  And I suppose I've come to that conclusion too.  And that is why I still play because from a historical aspect I don't really get immersed.  But I like to crack a beer and joke on vox, and the best times are when it's midnight on Friday night, and Rockdog is convincing me to fly a zero on a capped base, just getting whacked like a fly and laughing about it.  And then joking on 200 with the other team, trading salutes and taunts.

There's alot of things I haven't done yet in this game, and so I'm going to keep trying new things.  One of my most fun (and lowest scoring) tours was flying a tour in attack in the A-20.  Maybe I'll work on that some more.  Maybe I'll fly bombers some more.  I've barely touched the light bombers in this game.

Alright, whine mode off.

p.s. I regularly fly FSO and I do poke my head into AvA once in a while.

You know, you see all the constant crying over the tollshedders, the furballers, the podunk GVers, ect. all the time. This thread really seems to point out the fact that this game really is more balanced than we whine it out to be. Telling people to go try their hand at ruining a different group of people's day (that's the whole point of this game, after all) instead of saying that only one group should exist overall really makes a point.

Up a GV and get some skills in those. I found it's actually nice to GV if you get a good battle going. SPawn campin is a beast, but it's part of the game... So up a GV if you don't already... As long as Dr7 isn't on the other end of the spawn.  :uhoh
