Title: Ping question.
Post by: Wingnutt on March 10, 2008, 09:15:29 PM
since ive been playing, my ping in game has been around 30-36ms

out of nowhere, its now been sitting around 180-190..

If I ping the website (www.hitechecreations.com) i sit right at 32ms with a variance of maybe 2 ms..

I cannot find the link to the servers (to ping with plotter) I know its somewhere, im sure someone will point out its obvious location and make me look like a tard :D

no file sharing running.. nothing like that.

have tried bypassing router (wired) straight to modem.. etc etc the usual..

any ideas?

Hmmm,..pretty nasty.  Did your ISP change gateway providers?

Nope, we havent changed anything that im aware of.

though this company has a bad habit of making changes and then not mentioning them untill someone asks, So Ill do just that.

EDIT: called the backbone, no changes since December, when they opened a new pipe to Victoria for more bandwidth reasons.

Im stumped.

This is a routing problem.  I tried to go to your hop #5, and AT&T handed off to Level3, but it died in Level3's network.

So I tried to trace back to your hop #6 and AT&T handed it off to Glbx, but it died in their network.

Seems someone is not answering the question correctly as to where to find you.

so this is a middle man issue?

Maybe AT&T as mad because we have taken so many of their phone customers :D

so, what can I do?

EDIT: "Plutonium member" huh?

what comes after that Pepperoni?
Title: Re: Ping question.
Post by: Skuzzy on March 11, 2008, 04:55:13 PM
Suddenlink should be able to get this taken care of through thier ISP.

After Plutonium, I would think a melt-down would be appropriate. :D

I guess its easier to ask here than start a new thread so:
I have tried pinging the HTC site and get an average of 1481ms.  I have sattelite internet and have it wirelessly connected through the house.
70% of the time i don't have problems in the game, but every now and then people see me warp around really badly (even say I'm cheating).  However the days it's bad the internet is fine the weather is even good.  Also i never see people around me warping.  I would use Pingplotter but it says my 30 day trial is up when i've never used it.  The warping stops if i turn graphics down a little so could it be my graphics card? (i also get alot of "visual distortions" that only minimizing the game helps)

The latency on a satellite connection makes it difficult to do anything real-time.  There is really nothing that can be done about it.  It is the nature of the beast due to the extreme distance the data packet has to travel.

ok thanks, i figured the sattelite had a lot to do with it.

Update:

talked to backbone some more about the issue, they can see it too.

but since the problems dont start occurring till hop 9. (Me -> Server) its outside of our network and control. at least thats their explanation.

they told that this morning, so I was hoping maybe it was fixed..

came home now at lunch and tried to play and 10 min in got discoed..

ran ping test..

Im getting packet loss at hop 9  :frown:

OK, I find this odd..

I only get this massive 25 hop count trace when I ping the game server..

doesn't happen when i ping ANY other site.. tried over a dozen..

this doesn't make any sense.

why am I being redirected through these extra hops when I ping the server, but it doesn't happen anyplace else?

of all the places Ive pinged I think the most hops ive had was 15, then I ping the game server.. 25..

no good.

Suddenlink hasn't changed anything, and before my ping was always ROCK SOLID, and in the 30s..

I don't know if this new issue started after the game server upgrades..  thats the only thing remotely relevant that has happened in the recent past that I know of.

We cannot effect routes.  We have no control over the routers.  And if suddenlink is saying they cannot do anything, that is not true.  Any Tier 1 or Tier 2 ISP can file a problem report with any other Tier 1 or Tier 2 ISP.

Whenever there is a routing issue, all the ISP's involved are obliged to sort the problem out.

clearly you've never delt with suddenlink

Im gonna e-mail a copy of my trace to our backbone.

might aswell be doing a dance or sacrificing a chicken though..

the way this company woks.. if there is a problem.. .. unless a inordinate number of people start complaining.. there is no problem.

If i knew WHO to contact, i would do so directly.. as expecting my company to do so is wishful thinking.

I have already filed a trouble ticket with AT&T.  I just think it would get resolved faster if the other end of the pipe would pitch in.

Well to my amazement, they actually returned my e-mail and told me that *gasp* they were aware of the problem.

well, the first step is admitting there is a problem I guess.

Good.  Routing issues usually do not take long to clear up once they are aware of them.

UPDATE:

"No problem found"

they point to the fact that the ONLY time I have this routing issue is when connecting/pinging to the game servers.

ticket closed.

got discoed again 20 min into a squad mission :aok

Im out of ideas too...

the issue only occurs when connecting to / pinging the game servers..
tried pinging all of them same results..

tried pinging every other site I could think of, near and far..  no issue.

cant really enjoy the game anymore, afraid to take a up a perk plane anymore, have already lost well over 200 points to discos.

used to get 1 disco a month or so, now im suprised if I can fly a single session of 30 min without getting one..

AND ANOTHER THING..  last night I was flying and BAM "host connection lost" pops up.. but I could still hear everyone on vox talking.. until I clicked "OK" and was booted from the game.

I can see why you are frustrated.  If my ISP refused to do anything about thta, I would be switching.  That is one ugly trace.
Title: Re: Ping question.
Post by: Wingnutt on March 15, 2008, 12:00:46 PM
they wont do anything because the only time i get the ugly trace is when i ping aces high servers.

defiantly an uphill battle to convince them its their problem when the problem only occurs on one particular trace, and everything else looks great.
