Title: SLI or not...hmmm
Post by: LePaul on March 10, 2008, 10:36:31 PM
I'm looking for some feedback on two nVidia cards  (not interested in ATI, thank you)

Which is faster/better:

A) Dual nVidia GeForce 8800 GT 512MB

B) nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB

I've read the SLI/dual setup is actually faster, but I've heard good things about the solo card too.

Thanks!

According to Tomshardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/us/ (http://www.tomshardware.com/us/)) the duaL 8800 GT superclocks beat the 8800 GTX and the 8800 GTX superclocked.

That was in the best video cards for the money, February review.  Not sure if it changed in March or not.  They also have very nifty performance comparison graphs there.

Just remember that you're paying 200% on a less than 5% ACTUAL performance gain. Apparently modern CPUs can't reach the data feeding rate of an AGP card, much less an SLI PCI-E setup...take that with salt though, just read it somewhere.

Interesting points

I know the GT is hard to find...Im pricing out a new Dell XPS system (I hear you groaning) and the options are the SLI, GTX or GTX Ultra.  SLI seems to have the bigger oomph.

I'd either settle for a single 9600GT or wait untill they release the rest of the 9-series. Getting a SLI now will be a very poor bang-for-buck solution the moment the new chipset gets released.

Even if you have to purchase now, think about it: With dual GT's your upgrade path is done for. With a single GTX you have a SLI option later.
I don't see any sense whatsoever to upgrade FOR SLI, it's more like poor-mans crutch when the old single card gets too slow.

OR.. A true hardcore players way to get more performance from two high-end cards. $1200 SLI setup.. if you have too much money.

That's an excellent point

The upgrade path is quite different.

So far the 9 series hasnt impressed many.  I may sit on buying anything for another month or two.  Just to see what happens.

I haven't heard too many bad things about the Dell XPS series.  I know, I can always build my own or recruit someone to do it....but I have gotten lazy in my late 30s   :)  Onsite service, warranty and all that sounds fine.  After years working in IT, the last thing I want to do is debug my PC when I get home.

Here my thought; Keep it simple.

SLI; more power, needs more psu, needs bigger case...

On a somewhat related note, where do you get the profiles to run the SLI in AH? I've looked all over the Nvidia site and can't find them?

Thanks!

People on the board have made their own. I'd try a search.

Yeah, that I have done.  The review sites are hard to sort out.  Some base their results on games I dont play.  So I was hoping to get some insight from Aces High players.

I think I'll just pause on the desktop system and buy the laptop with the 8000 series nvidia in it  :)

Well, this same website says Aces High comes supported from nVidia...but here's a tutorial on how to make your own profile.
