This is going to backfire. Last time they tried this (with smaller refunds, albeit) folks used it to pay bills because they were so in debt.
I've already spent most of mine on a single car insurance payment. How sad is that?

I don't know if debtors paying of debts is exactly backfiring. It is still putting money into the economy andproviding more capitol to businesses.
For my part, that is exactly what I am going to do. I am taking what I get for me, my wife and my children and throw it at my debt. Yeah for me! :rock
My only concern is that our government is borrowing money in order to provide this stimulus package. So, the feds are going further in debt to try and shore up an economy in trouble because of debt :huh :noid

Why not...umm...save it? You know...put it in the bank, let it earn interest and have it later when you might really need it?
Foreign concept I know, but not a bad idea.

If you're getting money back, you're bad at managing your money and accounting in general. If you broke even, good on you. If you owe, you're bad at managing your money and accounting in general.

If you owe money, then you are good at managing your money. It's better to keep all of your money, then pay it at the end of the year rather than paying the government to hold it, interest free, for the whole year.

I believe your thinking the thread is about your tax return, but it's about the government rebate check were all getting. I believe it's $300.

Actually I believe it is $600.00 for adults, $300.00 for each child.

Ah! Okay. Sorry. I don't qualify, dammit!

Well since my social studies teacher told us about this im gonna make sure my mom will give me half of she gets because of each kid gets like an extra 100$
-
Actually I believe it is $600.00 for adults, $300.00 for each child.
Is there a cap on that? If not then I am going to get back $1200 for two adults and $600 for three kids.
Thats a smokin $1800 bucks....not ever gonna happen for me. I bet the states and the feds tax the crap outta that money just because they hold the cash now and they don't want to let it happen that way.
If they do happen to let me get $1800 then I am going to buy a new rifle after paying off the last of the credit cards.

I'm gonna wait and find out if it's simply an advance on next years' return, like the last time they did this.
If ya'll remember, the last time wasn't simply a gift. It was merely an advance on your next return; All that happened was I got $600 less at tax time.
-

3 Kids at 300.00 = 900.00.....which means you'll get 2100.00 if all that was stated is right.
2 adults @ 600.00 = 1200.00
3 kids @ 300.00 = 900.00
Total get backs from China...err I mean the U.S. Gov. = 2100.00
Getting a new Calculator? Well not priceless..... :lol..But Cheap!!!!!

That is not at all true. All he has to do is contact the Emperor's Club. Governor Eliot Spitzer of New York was only paying $1,000 an hour for a really high class chick. So he could easily get two really high class ladies for an hour for only $2,000.
Of course, if he has much lower standards than the Governor, he could get by with spending a lot less! :lol :lol :lol

Ah, OK, I get it now. I had forgot about that scene from "Office Space".
That movie is a true classic, but it has been many years since I last watched it.
I was wondering how it was that you knew that his name was Lawrence. :lol :lol :lol

Well crap I typed that one out wrong and RedTop just jumped on it like it was a trampoline....oh well crap happens.
I seriously doubt they send me that cash and if they do another thing I am going to drop it on is making two extra car payments as well. That will help me pay off the ride this summer instead of next at Christmas time.

Course you all realise its more of a loan then a rebate.
Come next your your gonna be taxed on it as additional income.
Which means you will be paying taxes on money you've already been taxed on
-
seems odd that no one knows how much we will get.. I had heard 300 per adult and 100 per child with a 1200 cap.
if it is 300 I will get back about a fourth of what I now owe them.. that is fine.. any money that they give back to me.. or anyone else.. is a good thing.. any money they don't have to spend is a great thing.

buy gold !
(http://www.usadiamonds.net/images/gold_ounce.JPG)<<gold hit 1000$ /ouce,
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7294040.stm
Since the beginning of the year the value of gold has increased by about 20%, after it rose 32% in 2007.
If i would have borrowed 100 000$ from bank with 10% and buy gold in january 2007, could make 52 000$, pay 10-12k interest, and still could make 40 000$ profit.

I got the thing from the IRS today telling me about the rebate. Looks like I have $600 coming, my gf $1200. She wants to put it towards the summer vacation plus some odds and ends.
I'll stick my $600 in savings, for a new gaming PC. Heck, that should cover the video card at these prices LOL

Ah Earned Income Credit. Isn't it great?
I agree...I do not comprehend this free giveaway system we have for folks who don't pay taxes. Its a cheesy "feel good" for them...because those who dont pay get offended by those who do pay in and get refunds.
:huh

Think i'm gonna buy me a new sight and scope for my bow. Thinking of moving up to the open class in 3D. Not sure yet though.

yep.. I had heard wrong.. I went to the gov site and found out.. it is a little complex but... everyone who filed and paid taxes gets $600 to start with so long as their adjusted gross was $75k or less..
after that you get less all the way down to $300 which is the minimum.. each child is worth $300
"Basic Amount of Payment: Taxpayers who had a net income tax liability will receive a payment, unless they can be claimed as dependents on someone else’s return, are high-income individuals or do not have a valid Social Security Number. The payment is equal to the taxpayer’s net income tax liability, but no more than $600 for a single person or $1,200 for a married couple filing a joint return. The minimum payment is $300 for a single person or $600 for a married couple filing jointly.
People with no net income tax liability will usually get a minimum payment of $300 for a single person or $600 for a married couple filing jointly, as long as they have qualifying income of at least $3,000. To figure your qualifying income, add together the following amounts:
*
Wages that are reported on Form W-2.
*
Net self-employment income.
*
Social Security benefits reported in box 5 of the 2007 Form 1099-SSA, which would have been received in January 2008. People who do not have a Form 1099-SSA may estimate their annual Social Security benefit by taking their monthly benefit and multiplying it by the number of months during the year they received the benefit.
*
Certain Railroad Retirement benefits reported in box 5 of the 2007 Form 1099-RRB, which recipients would have received in January 2008.
*
Veterans’ benefits received in 2007, including veterans’ disability compensation and pension or survivors’ benefits received from the Department of Veterans Affairs. People who weren’t required to file a tax return can estimate their annual veterans’ benefits by taking their monthly benefit and multiplying it by the number of months during the year they received the benefit.
*
Nontaxable combat pay if the taxpayer elects to include it as earned income.
Extra Money for Qualifying Child: Eligible taxpayers who qualify for a payment may receive an additional $300 for each qualifying child. To qualify a child must be under age 17.
Phase Out: The stimulus payment –– both the basic component and the additional funds for qualifying children –– begins to phase out for individuals with adjusted gross incomes (AGI) over $75,000 and married couples who file a joint return with AGI over $150,000. The combined payment is reduced by 5 percent of the income above the AGI thresholds.
Here are two examples of how the phase out works:
*
An individual with AGI of $80,000 and federal income tax liability in excess of $600 would qualify for a basic rebate of $600. Because this individual’s AGI exceeds $75,000, however, her rebate is reduced by $250 (the credit is reduced by multiplying the amount of AGI over $75,000 by 5%). The taxpayer receives an economic stimulus payment of $350.
*
A married couple with two children, AGI of $160,000 and federal income tax liability before the child tax credit exceeding $1,200 qualifies for a basic rebate of $1,200 and an additional qualifying child credit of $600 for a total rebate of $1,800. But because the couple’s AGI exceeds $150,000, their rebate is reduced by $500 (the amount of AGI over $150,000 multiplied by 5%). The couple receives an economic stimulus payment of $1,300."
