Title: LGM Films Presents...The Thousand Mile War
Post by: Kermit de frog on March 14, 2008, 06:34:21 AM
Thank you ShaunBN and Strip for helping me film parts of this film by flying very nice and giving a few ideas on Wednesday night and thank you Hornet36 for loading the Aleutian Map right after your Snapshot event was done.  <S>

The past three nights I've been working on making a film for this FSO event.  I hope it educates and entertains many FSO pilots.  If I had more time, I'd make it even cooler with more detail, but time is never on my side.  I did my research on this event rather quickly, but I hope I got everything correct.

Although I was involved in some scenes and knew what you planning I was still moved. Your choice in music was perfect in my opinion. I thought the F4Fs buzzing the carrier, then transitioning to flying near the mountains in a nice formation was stunning.  I loved it all in all.....nice work up with maps and timeline by the way.

If your up for it I would love to do a Frame 2 preview using the successes and failures of Frame 1.

PM me when youll be on next if ya could sir. :salute

hahaha i showed the film to my dad (retired navy F-18 pilot) after explaining what an FSO is (he used to play fighter ace, and we had similar reinactments) and he got all fired up, he's on his macbook right now looking at building a PC so he can play too :P

cept hes like... ohh man i gotta have the 28" monitor, and the FORCE FEEDBACK joystick (we used to have sidewinders) instead of that crappy pos you have blah blah blah

and im like... dammit! (waits on tax return so i can build a new cool computer.... better than his)

Hmmm, using the Aces High Film Viewer sounds like work to me...

I could give it a shot.  Events that you all think are interesting such as, vox converstation :)  , fights, formations, landings, patrols  whatever you think would make a good story.
Hell if you have a story of your own and would like to share it with me in text format, post it here for all to read!  Hell post any ideas for the film that you might have.

So email me your AHF films from Frame 1 already!

Remember to make sure the file size is low otherwise email will not work.  If you are handy with FTPs, then I could give ya access to my server for uploading large files that email doesn't like.  I can start working on this by Tuesday and hope to get something done by friday.  That's not much time so a 2min video would be something I'd shoot for again.  This video wasn't easy to make or even film!  Ask strip about not being able to see the CV or him discoin' 15 times in an hour!  I told ya the CV was there on my screen Strip :)  This won't be easy for me.  We'll see if I can make something wtih the film viewer, as I didn't use the Film Viewer to make this film.  If it turns out weird, I'll stick to one film per FSO event.

Oh and I guess it's now "Over 400" people in FSO.  Wow!

<S> CM's  This frame btw was the "coolest" I've ever been in.  Excellent tactics by many squads.  Many working and talking together throughout the frame.  It was awesome.  Stoney, AKDogg <S>!

Edit:
Thanks for your feedback.  Hopefully you'll have your squadmates who don't fly FSO, rethink their decision after you show them this film.
the4ork, that's cool of your father to do that!  lol.

Kermit,

Just getting into video editing.  Not very good I'm afraid.
Just made one film using Windows Movie Maker.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKDMO-mvk5U

I really want to learn how to do this as its a major deficiency
in my skill set.  Can you tell me what video editing software you
used?  I'm on a Windows XP Pro machine.

Anyone else with tips or recommendations, please chime in!

Thanks!  <S>

Delta,
I'll try to be brief.
I bought a book on amazon called “Inspired 3d Short Film Productions” a few years ago.  Ignore half of it as it applies to 3d animation software, but the other half is perfect!  It will REALLY help you out in short film making!  I tend to go back to it every so often to refresh my mind on many topics.
I use Sony Vegas 5.0.  Don't use Windows Movie Maker, it will hold you back!  Get yourself a sketchpad so you may write down your ideas!  Always have a goal.  There's more to it than video so add sound effects, music, voices, or anything that serves a purpose to the story.  Always ask yourself, why would someone want to watch this film again?  Think big picture, then work your way to the smaller details.

I WILL help you out, but via email, PMs or just another thread if you are willing to go out and buy a book.
<S> 96Delta

I'll pm you more info tomorrow such as some drawings and how this project progressed over the 3 days of "production". From the original idea to the final version.

P.S. if you have any tips on using the Film viewer, I could use some right about now, Delta.  :)
<---Aces High Film Viewer scares the crap outta me!

Hi Kermit,

Thanks for the reply.
I just ordered that book!  :aok

Can't wait to get it so I can start reading and experimenting.
As far as the AH Film Viewer is concerned, I'm at a loss.
I'm guessing that there isn't a manual for that available.  There should be.
Its not very intuitive.

My experience with it consists of about 30 minutes of cursing
at it and struggling with it.  Like you, if there are any tutorials
on how to use it I would love to hear about them.

How are you capturing the video you're using in the
'1000 Mile War" video you did.  The camera movements are
all very realistic.  I was playing around with FRAPS but maybe you
are using something superior.

Thanks again for the offer of help.  I'm sure I will be taking you
up on it!  :)

Kermit is using Track Ir to film those awsome shots :). He records with Fraps while in game and zoomz in and uses his head to aim the camera :D lots of neck work but dont worry kermits got a strong neck from his years of working the corner when he was younger

Kermit,

Got that book.  Its a substantial volume!
Gonna have a look at it this week.

Found these videos on YouTube.  Pretty well done.
Nice transitions, dubbed in game sounds and nice
musical selection.  Title and Credits pages look nice
too.

Here they are for your continuing edification. :D

I would love to learn what video editing software he
used to create this.  It isn't included in the credits. :(

I would also love to get a copy of these in the original MPEG
format.  YouTube compressed the things to death.  :huh
