Title: "Wings"
Post by: Rich46yo on March 14, 2008, 10:11:21 AM

I was getting ready for work the other AM, and had the TV on, when I noticed "Wings of the Luftwaffe" was on featuring The Butcher Bird. It made me realize I havnt see this great show in years and I set the time to record the episode.

This was a terrific show and Im going to start looking for the DVD box set. My favorite episodes were probabaly, "Wing of the Red Star". You fellas remember this show right?

They had some inaccuracies, but way better than most History Channel stuff these days.

I really loved the original footage they used, even if a lot of times they re-used stock or used the wrong plane to illustrate a point.

They use a lot of footage from training movies made at the time. I love any training materials, posters, movies...ect from WW-ll.

I think they run the show every day now on the military channel.  I comes on mid day here on the east coast.

I was less than impressed with the "Wings of the Luftwaffe" episode on the 190's.

They spent way to much time discussing the use of the Radial Engine, there was a whole segment used on the Japanese use of the radial engine.  Most of the wingcam footage was of 190's being shot down.  Very little time was spent on the success many Geschwader had in the 190's and the pilots that excelled in them.

Like many "documentaries" of this type, most of the time was spent discussing the futility of the Luftwaffe against the juggernaut of the Allies.

Just plain old annoying...  Just discuss the aircraft and the people who flew it....leave the damn bias out of it for a change.

I guess i got somthing different from it. I loved the shots of 190 construction and development. And I dug the segments of the different engine types. You just dont see that kinda stuff that often.

But yeah it would have been better had they spent more time on how the machine actually fought, and the men who fought in it.

Is it me, or does the narrator sound a bit like Patrick Stewart?

The guys who narrates Wings of the Red Star is great. Wasn't it Peter Ustinov?
