drop gear while performing rolling scissors?
-
I can't remember the last time I dropped gear in a fight, rolling scissor or otherwise.
-
Depends on the plane i am in.

gamey :uhoh

A couple of weeks ago when I was fighting a P38 in my F4U-D. First time I have have, for that matter. I won too! :aok

drop gear while performing rolling scissors?
There's no benefit in dropping the gear
-
I might drop gear trying to get an over shoot in a dive, that's it. In rolling scissors I am trying to save all the energy I can for the snap.
-
There's no benefit in dropping the gear
The benefit is in the loss of speed causing your opponent to overshoot.

It's like dropping your pants.

Worthless tactic that will get you killed by any decent to above average stick.
-
Been known to drop em at the top of a loop - but thats only because my gear button is next to my flap button and I get all excited etc.......works tho (kind of) - helps you over the top (no, I still didnt win...lol)

I'd do it if I knew I could shear a gear off into Lazer's cockpit and rampwn him while only losing the gear.

Depends what altitude. If your on the deck and you see the ground getting too close while your inverted, pop the gear, touch and go on the grass, raise the gear, and watch the other guy auger. The only plane that i could see it being usefull in at an altitude above 1k is the f4u.

Wheels are for takeoff (optional for landing) :)

To correct myself (after reviewing the film) it was a rolling scissor that turned into a flat scissors and then a high G turn. I dropped my gear when we got into the turn, not during the scissor and I did it because he was getting around on me.
-
I was in a turn fight with a la7 in a c205, on the deck. I was turning left but he was closing. I was working the throttle, but he still was getting dangerously close to a firing solution at 200 yards dead 6 (I even took some hits). So I drop gear, already got flaps out, chop throttle more, and he literally passes outside my wingtip, 5 yards away, and because he's faster he keeps going. At about 50 yards I unload into his buttocks.
Won the fight, got away. That said, it's only rarely useful, and I suppose a rudder stomp would have slowed me down better, but I was trying to keep on the ball because I was slow enough as-is. I didn't want to spin out into the trees.
EDIT: Sorry, forgot to specify: This was just this past week. I might go 100 sorties or more before I drop gear in a fight, and every time but once it's been in an f4u only.

You can in a Stuka. Got into a fight a few months back with an La-5, was a little slugging coming over the top of a rolling scissors and my gear clipped his tail section and then I rolled really fast. Thought I lost a wing, checked and saw they were intact, hit Ctrl+D to see damage and it showed my gears gone which I confirmed later by belly landing on RTB. The other guy was a good sport about it, was laughing about how much the bill is going to be to remove two Ju87 landing gears from his plane.
One a side note, Stuka is a tad faster without its gears and maneuvers much better too ^__^
ack-ack

Yeah, I've ripped them off intentionally in a dive before so I could dogfight in it better. It's great fun to club seals in that bird.

We tested this a few years ago in H2H. Shooting off eachothers gear. Marked improvement in handling and speed.
-
Well, they're definitely draggy... But I wonder how much they weigh?
I don't suppose you have the weight readout in the E6B back then?

drop gear while performing rolling scissors?
Why would you want to?

I only drop gear to land, and sometimes I even forget to do that.. :o

It's more fun to wrestle polar bears! :t
But, ehm *Cough* Back on topic.
The only time I drop gear in combat is, well, never.

i dont drop gear while fighting, ive fought a bunch that did, i think most often in the f4us or better yet only the f4s sapposed to make the plane slow down faster.
-
i havent flown much this tour but i have a great story where flaps saved me in a fight...
i was in a F4U, and was 1v1 this guy in a hilly area, forget which map. but anyways, i looped, and i knew at the top of my loop that if i went the whole way, that i'd auger. so at that moment i dropped gear going 250 mph, it cut my speed alot so i only gained 50 mph at the bottom of the loop and then i drove up the hill while going 300 mph, and the guy augered trying to follow me.
got many a pm saying that i hacked being able to drop my gear at that speed. he obviously didnt know about the corsairs gear...

I run with scissors and drop my gear! <lifts skirt>
