Title: What needs more skins?
Post by: JeepinAZ on March 14, 2008, 11:14:00 PM
Under the advice of a fellow skinner, I've decided to branch out & do some skins for aircraft that are in need of some diversity....

Suggestions?

Anything USAAF that served in PTO.  We have 1 total non-"N" P-47 skin for PTO.  There's only 2 P-51D skins from PTO (basically the same).  1 P-51B skin from PTO?  The P-38 is best represented in this regard, but overall, USAAF PTO fighters are lacking.

Although the P-40 may seem like wasted effort eventually, there are quite a few nice PTO P-40 skins out there.  And, of course, there will be lots of new LA-5, LA-7, and P-39 skins to do soon.

I always thought a USAAC SBD would be nice, but I guess that falls in with the P-40, since its an older model.

Actually, there are 7 skins for the Boston - Boston III Skins (http://www.netaces.org/skins/boston3/boston3.htm)

You probably already know this, but the La-5fn and the Ostwind probably won't be good choices, as they'll be updated soon (I'm assuming that skins for an old version of a plane won't work on an redone one).

Anyway, good luck!

I don't know how correct the skin is on this plane how ever it is very colourful. It is a Vichy French Boston.  (http://www.picburst.com/uploads/e012392147.jpg) (http://www.picburst.com)

Anyone up for an M-8 skin?  Little guy has been with us for awhile, and only has the default atm.

A few months ago I looked at it and I have the utmost respect for those who have skinned the older stuff.  I don't think I am up to it.

Just posted about the KI-67, been here a while and still only has the rather boring default "putty" skin.

Alrighty, I'm almost done with my Jug skins that are in the works & I'll be fixing my current in game ones after that. I'm gonna try my hand at fixing a Pony skin that is in game as well but I'll get started on the list hopefully in the next month or so. I can't fly right now due to graphics issues so I figure I'll have pleanty of free time to do skins now. As for the M8, I'd be up for giving it a shot to see if I can do it. That Boston skin looks pretty tempting too if I can find some other info on it.

No skins are "needed" -- they simply are there.

The skins are here only for player enjoyment, and keep in mind the game also has an option to not display any of them, should players choose.

You can't just look at a plane's skin list and say "oh, that needs more skins!" because it's not always the case.

Granted, there are some I'd like to see, but just skin what you like to skin for. I started in 109s because I liked the plane itself. I also did some 190s because I liked the markings. I'm doing some other stuff lately, but I still want to go back and do more 109s/190s for those same original reasons.

So, skin what you like. If it strikes your fancy to do one plane, do it! You don't need to spread out until you *want* to do a new (different) skin, and then it's just a matter of learning as you go.

It's not like you are building a resume or anything  :D "Yeah, your USAAF stuff looks good, buy you're lacking in navy planes, and your bombers are just nonexistent!"  :rofl :aok

Thank you Krusty for another useless post. I didn't ask for what needs to be skinned because the game won't work without them. I just wanted some suggestions for skin ideas. So I'm sorry my title was incorrect.

New thread title.

What skin (if you don't have them disabled because we don't need them.) would you like me to do as my next skin. I'm trying to build a complete resume of all aircraft used in WWII & I'm starting with Aces High II. Thank you for your time & I hope you have a splendid day.

What I think Krusty was saying was skin what you enjoy skinning. Otherwise it becomes boring and tedious... like work.

While some might think Krusty sometimes deserves a harsh retort, this was not one of those times.

I believe his post added nothing to this thread other than pointing out a flaw with my title and pointing out of the obvious.

Maybe we can dig up some M3/M8 skins?

If you can supply pics to give me a general start, I can do the rest of the research. I'd like to try doing a vehicle skin.

Well, I can't, I don't know what to search for pics wise, but someone on here must...

EDIT: BTW - Where's my Mexican jug?  :D

Almost finished. If you check the Viva Los Jugs thread, you'll see the latest revision. I've just got to blur the stripes on the fuselage & it's ready for submission. Honestly, I didn't want to do it at first, but I think it's the best skin I've done so far, if I don't say so myself  :devil

The one thing I would suggest, in regards to skins.

There are times where it feels like folks are racing to put out skins as fast as they can.  I don't know if that's because they fear that the slots will get filled, or they're just cranking them out off one template.

Note the quality of some skins vs others.  The masters in this forum take their time and get it right.

I'm not one doing skins, I just try and help with the info, so take this for what it's worth.  But as one who pays attention to how the skins look in the air, you can tell the good from the fair to middle of the road crowd real quickly and the skins that get used are the ones that folks have taken the time to get right.

Again, just my 2 cents.

Understood completely. I've actually gone back several times on my Jug skins & fixed stuff. I usually let them sit for a while & come back to it & see if I've missed or messed up anything. I actually went back & re-did my first two because I wasn't happy with them and the way they were constructed. Coffee's Pot has been in the works for almost 2 months now (maybe longer because I don't remember when I started it.)

It IS the best skin you've done, probably the best jug skin of the bunch!
