Title: Licensed pilots...survey
Post by: Brocster on March 16, 2008, 06:58:05 PM
I am just curious as to how many licensed pilots play this game.  Just a quick reply from those who are would be appreciated.  No real purpose, just curious....

I have 748 hours - Multi/Instrument rated.  However, I have not flown for about 5 years.  Favorite plane to fly was the Mooney 252.

I've been flying about 8 years now.
The funnest plane I've flown (and only briefly I might add-a little over and hour) was probably a Cirrus SR22.

I got my license back in 86. I took off and landed a plane as soon as I was big enough too see over the dash of my Dads plane back in 73 or 74. Have flown a 1940 something porterfield, also cessna 150,152,172,182,210 and the piper tri pacer. My favorite is probably the 1967 cessna 150 followed by the 172 any model year. Haven't flown for a few years now... Guess that's why I'm playin around here so much.......

Got my Private in '72.  Have accumulated just over 3400 hours since then.  Most "sh*# hot thing I've flown is a Mustang, most fun a B-17 or T-6, most satisfying the B-24.

Joe...  Do you have any idea of the distance you can cover at 140 miles an hour flying in a straight line versus driving a car?  Your choices are greatly improved over driving in case you can't figure that out wise guy...  Also being able to take passengers greatly adds to the fun of flying... kinda like the back seats in cars in case your not sure,... not to mention a few places I know of that you can only get to by plane or boat that have great restaurants and other things to do here in the North East USA..Your comment was neither funny or intelligent.
Also, When did you get you ppl?  That's what this thing is about in case your not sure of that.

Cherokee-180= 4 seats   rv-8= 2 seats   rv-8 much more fun to fly but there's something to be said for 4 seats and baggage room.

Began flying in 1994 at the age of 16, soloed at 17, licensed at 19. Private Pilot rating, bout 40-60 hours instrument, 250 hours or so total time. Ran out of money haven't flown since, 1999 or so.

C-152
C-172
Piper J-3 Cub (started flying in that one)

Fun planes have flown not rated in.

Boeing Stearman
Grob Glider
DeHaviland Twin Otter

It helps with the actual flying of these cartoon planes. Doesn't help at all with Dogfighting or simulated air combat.

Well, since my wife refuses to fly in anything with a prop (she is scared of airliners too,b ut for some reason she feels better in a larger aircraft... *shrug*) I don't get to utilize the 4 seats of the cherokee very often anyway.  So, I figured i might as well build something with a bit more "fun factor".  And, on those rare occasions that I do wind up flying more than 1 passenger, I can always rent a 172, or an archer at the local airport here.  Sure, more expnsive in the long run but, probably close to 90% of my flying is done either alone, or with 1 other person.

Thus... why im leaning towards building the RV8

Cool!  Man, I am envious of you.  Was the B-24 the "passenger" version that the Confederate Airforce has?

On another note...I had a chance to ride in the Kate (a modified T6 I beleive) that the Confederate Airfoce has.  It was one of the planes used in Tora Tora Tora.  I was just along for the ride, no stick time.  We did a few passes over the show at St. Paul, Minnesota in the early 90's.  We also simulated a intercept from a Corsair...That was sweet!

I completely understand that point of view sol.  I Know a few guys that can't even get their wives out to the airport to look at the plane.

WTG Oldman ...Congratulations to you.!!! :aok

You'll never be the same, and will view the world slightly differently. You've done something that few have done, or would do. In the history of the world there have been few, (proportionately) Aviators...

Quite an accomplishment!

im going to try and get my pilots license after highschool. it'll probably be really tough, since i have aspergers, and there are restrictions for those that need medications, so this summer i am going to try and live normally without them, and hopefully be done with them for good, with very little repercussion

PPL SEL in 1976.  Time about evenly split between Cherokee 140 and Cessna 172.  Funnest plane I ever rode in was a Stearman PT-17 - but just as a passenger.  Sadly, haven't flown (in real life) since I got married in '84.  Hoping to get back into it some day . . . For now, AH has to take it's place.

CONGRATS!!!! oldman :aok

Great feeling isn't it? I remember when I took my ppl exam. I've NEVER been so nervous in my life! I couldn't sleep the night before at all. It turned out to be a great day thanks to my examiner being a real nice fella that made me feel like we were just a couple of friends going out for a ride. When I got done I flew around for 4 hours just feeling like I was on top of the world. There is no better feeling IMO than flying by yourself on a clear, smooth day.

Bought an Ercoupe 415-CD (w/rudder pedals) in September 1978 - a friend and I flew it back to MVY from Indiana. Soloed in spring 1979 - PPL 160 hours later. Stayed busy operating Katama Airfield for a few years.

Over time flew (at least for a few minutes):

Waco Taperwing
UPF-7
Shinn
450 Stearman
Aero Commander - 500B and 500E
Piper 140 Cherokee's, Lance, Aztec, Arrow, Cherokee 6
C-150, 182 and 195
a Bonanza or two
J3, J2, Super Cub, Citabria
Bellanca - (triple tail) had to crank the gear up
jeez - lots, now I think about it

Met a very interesting man once - name of Robert Fulton. Met him cause I had previously met his son - also Robert Fulton. Anyway, one day the senior Fulton said he had someone he wanted me to meet - this very petite woman walked over and he said, "Phil, I'd like you to meet Anne".

My dad took me for my first airplane ride when I was 6 months old, in a J3. I've been around airplanes and airfields pretty much ever since. As much as I enjoyed the aircraft I had a chance to fly or ride in, the people I've met mean as much to me - perhaps more.

I could go on - but will spare you all the details.

thanks for the memories.....

Took lessons when I was 17, back in 1977.  Did my solo and the solo cross countries.  had a little over 40 hours in flying Piper Warrior IIs.  Had to pay for college, got married, had kids and have been poor ever since and never finished.  One of my bigger regrets.  Did get a chance to fly Piper Tomohawks a bit and later Cessna 152s.  Maybe someday when I grow up I'll finish.

It cracks me up hearing that from people because you know 99.99999996% of them are full of watermelon or believe what their lying recruiter told them to get them to shut up about being a military pilot because a .008 grade point average in high school isn't quit good enough. :rofl

I know (knew) a guy who washed out of the F/A-18 program when it was young and smelled funny because one eye went south on him.  Does that count?  Ok, I was all lined up for NFO but my eyes completely sucked (20/400 correctable to 20/20 in those days) and even if I could see retreads were banned.  I'm 20/13 now.  Amazing what the right surgeon can do with a laser...pity I wasn't born that way.

I was lucky.  I got the Navy to teach me to fly and after I got winged I got all my ratings by taking a simple 20 question test.

Ratings: single, multi, commercial, instrument.

Ironically, I have 1200 hours military and only a single hour of civilian time.  I don't even remember what kind of plane it was now.  A friend was working on his CFI and I bought an hour so he could get some time.

Good on you guys paying for flying time.  I'll stick to simming.

I'm currently working on my instrument rating--should finish by the end of May; just finished my multi add-on to my private.  My wife and I just purchased some property that has room for a grass strip and hanger/work space.  Hopefully while I'm working on my commercial this summer, I can also look at experimental/home-builts to dive into.  I'm semi-retired now, and since I'm a disabled Vet the VA is helping to pay for new career training.  Good stuff, 'cause I certainly would find it hard to afford to go through all this.  Heck, time in a BE76 Duchess (Beech twin-engine) for the multi is $240 / hour plus instructor time and a fuel surcharge.   :O

Ouch!

Getting my tail-dragger endorsement this comming week if the weather holds, then will be waiting on them to put the floats on the Super-Cub for my amphibian.

--->hey, networking is HUGE in finding a job out there.  I'm able to relocate if necessary.  I'm older (42), so a 30-year gig won't quite work for me with the majors.  After I build 500 or so hours multi while instructing after I get my CFI, I should be a candidate for some of the jobs I've seen posted in various sites--> I'd love to hear about jobs ya'll see out there with the Regionals or Charter/135 operations.  I've got a Bachelor's (BA, History) and an AAS in aviation science.  My current school (COCC) has an agreement with Embry-Riddle for CFI's, and a working arrangement for lower time requirements with Horizon and Alaska Air...

*edit* Hey HiTech, any chance of arranging a fly-in for our next AcesHigh get-together?  I could actually take a few folks from Central Oregon or places en route.  I'm sure others with planes available could do something similar...

Now that's a cool idea there. Fly in's are pretty cool even if your not a pilot or actually fly at all. I live 100 miles from chicago and a lot of the private airports and small public fields have breakfast fly in's all summer long. It's cool to go check em out and chat to the guys. Last one we had in my area they had a guy fly his ultra light from 45 miles south up to our field here! Was pretty funny to see the look on peoples faces when he told how he did it. He had scoped out farmers with flat fields and asked permission to land there, then his wife followed on the ground in the suv to refuel him. Forget how early he got up but was like right at the legal limit when he took off. Needless to say they towed the plane back in the trailer. :aok

Sol75,
I built my RV7 and It was simple, just have a lot of ear plugs on hand for doing the rivets or you wont be able to hear the sounds on this game. (Real loud lying inside the fuselage holding the bucking bar while a friend hits the rivet from the outside.) The instruction book is easy to understand. If you have basic knowledge of mechanics you should be fine. I started mine last feb and have 22.4 hours flying it now. So it was pretty quick. It was the quick build and I worked every week day from 4 until 9 with a friend and part of the time with 2 of my students. If you would like to see a pic you can go to www2.mayville.k12.mi.us and click on high school and select me, Nicholas Montei.

Le Sigh. No PPL here, best I got is my A-P...

On an unrelated note, are there any CFI's in Honolulu interested in a maintanence-for-training deal? :D

PPL,MEL,Instrument Multi,COM and CFI.  Haven't flown in three years because I got married.  Why do two people with two incomes still have less money than when I was single.  :cry Don't make a lick of sense to me.  Best flights were my aerobatic training in a T-34 and Stearman.  >

Sheesh... all these new liscences/endorsements.  I don't have a tailwheel endorsement but have a few hundred hours tailwheel.  My first SuperCub flight was from the factory in PA to OR with no radios - took bout 30 hours without flying more than 500' AGL. :D

PPL with about 90hrs total. Most of my time in C-152s and 172s.

Merlin III was the best ride so far on a maint test flight.

Saving for one of these because RVs cost too much. And GA planes cost too much to maintain.

I can build it exactly how I want for right around 30K. Cruise @ 150mph and still get 35mpg.

Guilty as well,

Current A/C is 1969 Reims Rocket

Pilot for 12 years, helps hardly none at all in MA, but I do "check 6" a lot more then most pilots.

I have also had a urge to get on the radio on downwind and call out  "base under attack" so help me God.

<S>  Frenchy,    still have the plane you did my BFR in several years ago, and I am still in Vero.

Yup,
I-80 all the way to Winemucca, Nevada then north east of the Cascades to the Columbia Gorge.  Funniest part was when I was asked how I would get accross the big mountains just west of Lockhaven, PA.  Those "mountains" are barely considered bumps in the Northwest. :D

Did you get your PPL/CPL before or after your A-P? Just something I'm curious about when I see people with both.

I have A&P, Inpection Authorization along with PPL.  Which one came first?   I took my PPL check ride in the morning, then went accross the field and took my O&P for my airframe.  Got both PPL and A on same day.  Three quarters later I got my P.  I guess you could say I got my PPL before my A&P (barely).

Neat! Never heard of someone knocking them out at the same time. Also, didnt mean to be potentially insulting in leaving off the IA. Was just for brevity's sake. :D

Think I was up through commerical and CFI-G  before the mechanic ratings then the powered CFI ratings then IA.  Are you going into aviation?

I already have my A-P, by going the 147-school route. No PPL though, as mentioned earlier. I just tend to be curious of those with both pilot's and technician's tickets, in particular the why's of it. But, I dont want to derail this thread too much  :D

Here in PA, there is a restraunt that has a landing strip and planes park out side next to the restraunt, lol.  BTW, thats in Reading, PA and I sure Murdr knows what field I talking about, hehehe.

Anyone who did any of their cross country time in Southern Illinois in the late 80's early 90's probably knows of a tiny little airport where  the Ground Service employed pretty young women outfitted in short shorts who would meet you on the tarmac and serve you milk and cookies while they topped off your tanks....

Don't know if they are still there, might have to fly down there to find out sometime this spring...  Good times...

Student pilot ..way out of current.

Best times: The hour over Florida in Crazy Horse with Lee Lauderback talking me thru the stuff I do in the Arena :)
His pre-brief question: 'how many hours have you had' ..answer: 'simulated? or actual?' ..ROFL.
His de-brief: 'You wear the airplane and did better than people I have seen with thousands of hours, you could solo in it right now'
He still doesn't beleive I only had 18 hours total, counting that one :)

The hour over the fields north of Madera after the warbird show in a PT-17 Stearman buzzing radio towers, I had 3 hours total ..then :)
You know the flying wires actually do humm and you can gauge flare speed by the tone change ..that was *cool* to learn.

The hour in my first 'stick' airplane, an Aeronca Champ ..and being left behind by a hawk (the actual bird) as he looked over his shoulder at me, and dove away.. ROFL!

I still only have 18 hours dual .. it was some of the most fun I have had on the planet with a machine.

Got my Private Pilot certificate in 1973 while attending Spartan School of Aero. Along with my A&P certificate.  I rented the Cessna 150 Aerobat for $10.00 per hr. and $15.00 per hour with the instructor.....oh that was the wet price (including fuel)  man those were the days lol   :aok

KTM520guy: Was just speaking with Jim today. I hope to get back in the air in about 3 weeks.

Also has anyone seen Master Blasters? It is filmed at 52F mine and KTM520guy Airport.
I was shocked to suddenly recognize the hangars.

HiTech

Hey Dale, I was asked to be in that show, passed because I was in Reno at the time and had no vacation. My rocketry club did do it.

Stop by, I'm behind the Cafe/Master Blaster Hangar, would like to grill you brats and shoot the chit, just for the AI alone.

I have good scotch and cigars.

PPL time way expired, My ex told me to stop flying back in '91. Foolishly I did and stuck with her until 2002. When we split she burned my logs  :O
I'm working on getting that all back now.
I have logged a bit of unofficial time since then and am currently building a Modified KR2S.
