Title: Mini-freeze since update
Post by: Lusche on March 22, 2008, 09:54:03 AM
Since the last update, I get some mini-freeze when I first hit any enemy during each sortie. This freeze is big enough not only to interfere with my aim, but caused a few deaths by collision or by augering.
I had not changed any settings after updating. I had not  reconfigured anything on my system or installed any new software. I only defragmented harddrive after update.
I was running 1280*1024, textures (512) preloading in system memory. AMD 64X2, Win XP, 2GB RAm, GF 7600GT.
To help me identifying the problem I removed all custom sounds and changed texture size to 256, to no avail. Texture size 256, 512 or 1024 with high-res pack, I always get the same result. I shoot, the moment my shells are about to impact - freeze. If I completely miss, no freeze.
I have no FR issues in any way.

Out of ideas now.

(Interesting side note: I noticed that each time I now run AH2, some files (all stdshapes) in cache getting fragmented again. Something I dind't experience before - And I always used to do regulary scans & defrags with O&O defrag)

I was getting the same thing, but figured it was the servers working over time pushing out copy after copy of the new release. I hope it will settle down after a couple of weeks.

That's no server issue, as I get this particular freeze offline too. It's somewhere system related. First hit's on enemy during sortie = freeze, no matter if on- or offline.

Yeah, I also think it's the server being over burden.  I'm having the same issue with the mini-freezes.

I haven't played offline yet.

P.S.  Have you defraged your harddrive since the download?

Same issue here, first engagement of enemy, I get about a five second freeze, usually as I am within firing range. Also have had all my bases disapear off my maps!??

Here is what I have done so far: De-fragged the hardrive, changed all video settings to performance, changed my video settings for aces high to lowwer settings, set my video detail sliders all the way to the right in the game.

This did net an improved frame rate...a whopping 23 now, but, the freeze still happens. I have squadies experiencing the same thing, almost all of them have suffered from a frame rate loss as well.

I'm sure that we'll get it worked out. :aok

Lusche: This sounds a lot like the stuttering I had noticed.  Problem happens offline and generally the first time I do certain things (fire my guns, hit an enemy, they burst into flames, etc).  None of this happened before the update.

My system: Intel Q6700 Quad Core2 2.66, nVidia 8800 GTS SSC w/ 640 MB video member, 2 GB PC DDR2 800 (PC2 6400), Windows XP.

I run the textures at 1024, but again, no stutter before this update.

also have you players cleaned out your films folder or deleted your cache folder to let it rebuild with updated files?

these 2 things might be causing the mini-freezes.......

Cache deleted, no films. Also it makes no difference if I'm filming or not.

To delete the cache, just delete the "cache" folder in your Aces high directory

I got the same problem with mini-freezes first time I hit a target.

It looks like hit-sprite textures is no longer default preloaded in system memory.

For the time being I shoot a tree after takeoff to get the hit-sprite textures loaded into memory

This workaround doesn't work well for me. I frequently alt-tab out of the game for other stuff, partly because I have to, partly because I do a lot high-alt bomber interceptions where I don't see the need to stare for 15mins on a basically empty screen during climbout ;)
It used to give me no problems, but now it seems indeed as if the hit sprite textures do only get loaded when firing.

Well, let's wait for Skuzzy to chime in on that matter...

Having stutters with hits, and having problems with not seeing hit sprites sometimes, but seeing other effects that indicate hits.

Same here.  I also noticed something else: I now see my hard drive being accessed while runing AH and this may be associated with the stutters.  Prior to this patch, after the textures preloaded, I never saw the hard drive being accessed at all while flying AH.  On my system the stutters are minor and I can't hit anything anyway, so they have little effect.

I am also having the mini-freeze problems since the new DL as discussed here with Skuzz yesterday.
Skuzz suggested to reduce texture size to 256 to make a comparison if that will help anyone to diagnose.
I remember having this same problem after another version update along with many more. Also a lot of folks said they were having this problem yesterday ingame.
The last time this happened it just went away after a while for me. <shrug>

I get the freeze when I fire my guns on a con first time .

DueCore Duo 6600 , Nivida 7950 , bah bah bah .

Worked fine till this game update .

UPDATE :

I just tried this offline as well . First time I hit a plane with gunes frame rate went from a peged 60 to 49 with small freeze inbetween .

Second plane with no loss off fps as it stayed peged at 60fps . I "did" fire the guns before I shot down the first one but did that by accident as I was looking toward the ground at that time .

If you get a freeze when firing your guns, be sure to check the hardware acceleration of the sound card.  Onboard sound chips all should be set to 3/4 acceleration as there is no real hardware acceleration for them.  All the slider does is set the priority the CPU will give sounds to be played.

If you preloaded before and suddelnly now have disk activity, it very well could be due to the increase in textures added to the game for all the new and updated objects.  Reducing texure size in the game's "Video Settings" will confirm that theory.

No stutter when firing guns, just when actually hitting something first time during a sortie. Sounds are no issue (no onboard sound), but as stated before, I even got rid of all custom sounds.Neither 3/4 not full sounds acceleration slider setting does change anything. Also, like stated in my initial posting, I reduced texture size even back to 256.
Also, like stated in my initial posting, I reduced texture size even back to 256. Fully new rebuild & defragmented cache. No change.

UPDATE :First time I hit a plane with gunes frame rate went from a peged 60 to 49 with small freeze inbetween .

Like Lusche says , it seems to be when I hit a plane as I havn't tried a building yet so far .

I just checked , on this new pc I hadn't had the sound turned down to standard yet ( me bad sorry  :( )

Will check that out soon as I can see if that made any differance .

Busy day here Easter and all  :)

UPDATE : It helped some , FR only went from 60maxed to 53 now , with a smaller stutter  than before . Just to say
it has no stutter or FPS loss on the second drone I just shot down offline .

I also fired my guns prior to shooting the first one down so it seems "to me" that it's just the plane exploding , seems it's not the guns themselves like I first thought playing the game online .

I went into task manager and shut off a lot of stuff.Think I had 18 things running still.Went into the game and it ran better. But the freeze was still there.I shot at a tree and I got a freeze. After that I think it was ok seemed to run smooth. The first plane I shot after that may have freezed a bit.Something about it didnt seem rite.I think it may be the hit sprite thats doing it and not the actual sound.I cant be real sure of that. Not sure if this helps but there it is.......

I also fired my guns prior to shooting the first one down...

I think you have to shoot at something and see the hit-sprites to ensure they are preloaded in system memory - its not enough just to shoot in air.

The frame rate issue has to do with the update. I have cleared cache, defragged, and even reloaded onto a faster drive. My machine has a AMD64x2 4400, 2GB ram, video has 512Mb of ram. my machine renders doom4 at max resolution. I was getting 60+fps prior to the update, now it will go down to a studdering 12.

HELP!

I did clear my cache, de fraged and set vid settings down, and have a vastly improved frame rate of 23 to 45 depending on where or what I am doing, (was at 4 to 17) and as usual if I look up the rates shoot up to 75 which is normal. So cleaning things up and modifying settings does help.

It may help with general performance issues, but not with the very topic of this thread so far. I do not have any FR problems at all, but even with settings dumbed down to stoneage, I get the "hit-sprite" freeze. It makes no difference if i run this with 256, 512 or 1024 textures, sliders to minimum, sounds settings tweaked ect...

Honestly I tried all I could. But it's (in my opinion) no performance issue as such, too many players with decent machines are suddenly suffering from it, and no reduction could fix it yet. And I didn't have any other performance trouble, no FR loss or such. I even did a full fresh install of AH2, to no avail. It's still there and most annoying - it did cost me a 163 today  :cry

I see a lot of posts on this subject but no "official" answer as of yet. Does anyone from AHII have an idea. Right after the update I'm having the same issues. It almost appears that they system is rendering an AC "skin". I've noticed this in IL2 when certain planes would get in range the game would pause or freeze because it was loading the plane skin. It just didn't happen when loading a bandits skin but if a friendly came within range it would do the same thing. Once all skins were loaded (textures) then it would smooth out or not happen at all.

Could this issue be related?
It is a very fustrating issue.

I keep asking but I am not getting very much information.

I need the DXDIAG output along with the specific in-game Video Settings, and Graphic Detail settings, along with any specific video card settings (AA, AF....) from anyone having this issue.

I need it emailed to me.  Please do not post it.  It is too difficult to get through that information in posts.

One thing that has changed and will have a potentila effect on performance is the trees/clutter.  When we fixed the problems with the trees dropping out too early or when someone set the game to less detail, it caused the tress to be shown where they used to drop out before.

If you run with high levels of anti-alising, your system performance in the game could be dramatically impacted due to that change.

"No stutter when firing guns, just when actually hitting something first time during a sortie."

Yup!  When I first hit an airplane in my flight, the screen STOPS!  Then 1/2 sec later, it SPEEDS up, then 1/2 later the speed returns to NORMAL.

Maybe the new hit sprites aren't being loaded in the preload option???

This might sound stupid, but what is anti-alising and how would one change it to improve  performance...

this setting smooths the edges of the graphics....it can take a ton of caculations if its set high....... It under you graphic card settings.. If you have a Nivida card you should have a "NIvida control panel" under start programs

<S>

I have not had any of the problems others are talking about. If it helps i can send my computer info and we can see what the differances are ....It may be one way to find out whats going on....Pm if needed

Since the last update, I get some mini-freeze when I first hit any enemy during each sortie. .... AMD 64X2, Win XP, 2GB RAm, GF 7600GT

Lusche,
Not sure if you've fixed this yet, but I have a similar system and had this same problem. Like you, I'm running an AMD 64X2 with WinXP, 2GB RAM, GF 7600GT (x2 in SLI) and was getting screen freezes and severe frame rate drops when I first engaged targets. It happened when my hits would strike causing smoke, fire or explosion.

I tried a few things including dropping my AA to 2x and lower screen resolutions but these changes gave no improvement. Then I checked Preload textures into memory (left Preload skins un-checked) and left Hardware Vertex Processing, Optimize Objs and Terrain checked.

In Nvidia Control Panel I changed the following from the default in the AH profile:
Set all Anistropic Filtering to OFF, AA to 2x, Force Mipmaps to BILINEAR, Texture Filtering to QUALITY and VSync to ON.
I'm not sure which of these did the trick but the frame rate drop and screen freezes are gone now. I'm back to running 1024 textures at 1600x1200 res.

Maybe bilinear mipmaps is the key.. will try it later on both systems, as I had the very same problem on my wifes old AMD 64 3000 with GT6600 too.

No joy so far. :(

Had all AA and Antisiotropic off, Vsync on, Mipmaps forced to Bilinear, Texture Filtering to Quality, Preload textures but no skins... still freeze at first hit.

For those of you who have experienced mini-freezes when first firing ur guns, I had the same problem and have fixed the problem.  I have the GE Force 8500 GT video card by Nvidia.  I fixed my problem by adding the Aceshigh.exe command to  "program Settings"  in the Nvidia control Panel and  programed those settings instead of using the global settiings listed for aces High under the global settings tab.  For those of you who want to try this fix, this is what I did:
Opened nvidia control panel; opened 3d settings; selected "managed 3d settings"; clicked on tab "program settings" clicked on Add button and added the AcesHigh.exe command ( I did this by the copy command).  After adding the AcesHigh.exe command to Program Settings, I highlighted AcesHigh.exe and specified the settings (on the drop down menu) as follows:
Anisotropic Filtering - - Application Controlled
Antialiasing-Gamma Correction -- Use Global Setting (on)
    Antialiasing-Mod -- Application Controlled
    Antialiasing-Transparency -- Multi-Sampling
Conformant Texture Clamp -- Use hardware
Error Reporting -- Use Global Setting (off)
Extension Limit -- Use Global Setting (off)
    Force Mipmaps -- Bilinear
Multi-Display/Mixed GPU Acceleration -- Single Display Performance Monitor
Stereo - Display Mode --  Use Vertical Interlace Monitor
    Texture Filtering-Anistropic Sample -- Off
Texture Filtering-Negative LOD Bias -- Allow
    Texture Filtering-Quality -- Quality
    Texture Filtering-Trillnear Optimization -- On
Threaded Optimation-- Use Global Setting (Auto)
    Triple Buffering -- On
Texture Filtering --Anistropic Mip Filter Op -- Off
    Vertical Sync - Force On

You really should turn the transparency anti-aliasing off - will help alot around trees, ect....

Could we get some utility to create cache for all relevant files (skins, hit sprites, damage holes, etc)? I mean, with the amount of skins and new graphics I got to fly months before I get rid of mini freezes.

Didn't help. Still getting hit sprite freeze on both systems. Overall performance fine.

I used to climb up offline to shoot a drone , really you don't have to as the field ack causes the same stutter the first time you shoot one .

Tried the fixes , did not help any .

I only have 4 total skins on my pc and I don't download them also just for the reasons that Waffle stated . Didn't like when the new skin would load .

This stutter is something else IMO from that . I am learning to live with it , it's no biggie .

My data point: I get freezes only on the first hit sprites, from nothing else.  I did the stuff in Waffle's thread and it changes nothing.. I'm running 2x AA and have been for a year or so.  The freezes started with this version.  There was a small drop in fps, from the ground graphics change I guess, but other than that, it's all smooth.
I also defragged.

also have you players cleaned out your films folder or deleted your cache folder to let it rebuild with updated files?

these 2 things might be causing the mini-freezes.......
but ig to films in there that i like to watch..... lol, ill try that, im laggy as hell (sorry for my tongue, only thing that fit) since the new version came out

You don't have to delete your films, just move them out of the film folder in the Aces high directory. If you have too many films in the films folder it can cause problems.

Anyone figured out yet how to fix this when using ATI RADEON X800 Pro? I'm using the 2007.0320.2241.38712 Catalyst control centre.

I've only been seeing this pause since the update and I've tried everything else anyone has suggested and everything else I can think of. No joy, first time a shoot a plane, I still get the pause.

If anyone with a similar card has fixed this, let me know what you did please.

I don't think the fix is on our side in this case:

"Optimized how hit sprites are loaded and changed the texture size of the sprites."

See: http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,232236.0.html  :)

I noticed the same problem offline.  Hit a plane for first time and like 1 sec freeze after that it's fine.  It's like the hit sprites aren't loading into memory at first or something.  AMD 64 X2 Vista 32 bit 2 gig ram.

I was having them but never payed much attention ,as they were only a split second long.

They are worse now. I've just crashed when following a 190A5 low on the deck. Screen freeze, the game freezes for 5 seconds, CRAHS!-back to tower.

Have had 2 or 3 today. They are huge and quite more than a nuisance...
