Title: P-39 Skin
Post by: Majors on March 22, 2008, 01:04:03 PM
Hi Mates

I grew up during WWII, was in Elementry School during the war.  My Dad was a Navy Pilot.

So, I have had a special interest in WWII Aviation for all my life.  Unlike my Dad, I flew fixed wing aircraft in the Army in SE Asia in the '60's

Anyway, I have a large library of WWII Aviation.  I have always been specifically interested in paint schemes and markings of Allied Aircraft.

There is a paint scheme on a P-39 that flew in North Africa that was very interesting to me.  Unfortunately, I just recently had some abdominal surgery and cannot reach up to the book shelves to get my book on this.

The P-39 had British Desert Paint, had Cocords (stars) in six places with the yellow surround.  Believe it had a red spinner.  I liked this one in particular and built a 48 scale model of it back in the 80's.  I may have a picture of that somewhere.

Anyone familiar with this particular aircraft?  Give me a couple of weeks to recuperate and I endeavor to find it.

Would make a great skin for the P-39.

You chaps do a super job with these skins.  Keep it up!!

cheers

There were some desert camo birds flying with the 12th AF.  I think I know what one you are talking about.  There was a color profile of it in the squadron signals P39 in Action book.

I'll have to get the scanner going after work

Is this the one you mean?

Interesting to note, star insignia on both upper and lower left wing - does that mean it is on both upper and lower right wing surfaces too?

Also note yellow surround is apparent only on the fuselage insignia.

No doubt this a/c will be skinned.

Quick recuperation to you, Majors.

Cheers.

Mates

That is the one indeed!!  In North Africa our aircraft had stars in 6 positions, like this one.

Would make a very nice skin.

Many thanks for your response.

Hope to be up and at 'em soon.

Cheers

wpould be nice to do but as the picture shows its a m model

i dont know if htc would let us skin it on a d model.

AS for the stars they would be on both wings top and bottom.
i think the yellow surrounds should be on all of them but i am not surel

its the sort of skin i would love to do

Hi Rogerdee

I wouldn't think that HTC would have a skin problem with this aircraft.  Major difference in D was bigger engine, more horsepower.

It would indeed make a nice skin.

I have the USAAF Flight Manual on the P39.  Has all the models, with specs on each one.  P39 was a tricky little plane to fly.  Know to go end over end on occasion.  However, one of my favorites over in WB and sure it will be here too.  In early war, can outrun (which I do a lot of) all the enemy planes.

Cheers

In short, the M model is armed like a D model with the horsepower of the N and Q models.

We have P-38H skins on the P-38G, so I don't see it as a problem, except if you don't mind being down 270 hp....

My regards,

Widewing

Dan
would you have any information on this plane i think it was from the 93rd fighter squadron
81st fighter group but havent been able to find anything more, except another profile that is
of different colours!!!

i am hoping you might be able to shed some more light on the subject
i would think the top profile wodld be more in keeping with operation torch and the desert theme, what
would be your opion?

I'd say probably skin it for the Q. The M,N, and Q, were all very similar. The only difference is those wing guns.

Better on the Q than on the D, IMO.
