Title: Hurry Home Honey
Post by: JeepinAZ on March 23, 2008, 06:32:11 PM
Well, with a little nudge from Fencer, I've decided to do this plane..

To replace this:

Question is this, does anyone know if this plane was a D or a B? I've dug through all my stuff & this is the only picture I could come up with (Via internet)

I'd kinda like to do an all O.D. Ship, but the two tone is kinda neat. Only question about this is if anyone can tell me if the upper wings were bare or painted O.D. From the picture above (with the crew pointing at the nose) It looks like it was bare at one point but maybe it was O.D. somewhere down the line? In the second pic, I can see the tops of the horizontal slabs have a white line on them & look dark (like O.D) and it almost looks like the wings have a white stripe on them too, but from that angle it's hard to tell if they're O.D. or if it's just shadows..

Little help anyone?

The pic of the crew sitting on the wing looks to match the profile that you posted first, with bare metal/aluminum wing and a black stripe.

The pic IMMEDIATELY above seems to have the dark upper wing and white stripe. It's hard to see, but appears to be there.

Considering your work on the other 51's, I think you will do an awesome job!   :aok

This plane had a green upper fusalage and wings.

From what I understand Capt. Peterson flew the B model until summer of '44. The D model afterwards (which is pictured at top). I have some pics from a modeling site, if you would like them PM me. Can't verify them as an accurate source though.

So the picture with "Hurry Home Honey" not in cursive appears to be his P-51B.

I decided to go with the O.D. upper wings even though one of the pics shows bare & the other appears to be O.D.

Still need to do the underwings & some weathering (and elongate the vertical section of the T), but here is the progress so far:

Looking Good!  I love that plane, there was a show in the early 90s about the 357th that played on Discovery and History channel.  It had interviews with all the pilots still around and Mr. Peterson was a hoot.   :aok

Mr. Peterson was from Minnesota.  I had a chance one time while taking flying lessons back in the 70s to land behind him.  Bout as close as I'ver ever come to flying with a P51 pilot :)

Thinking the white ID bands on the tail are too far out towards the end.  Should line up closer to the wing bands.  Same width too.  And I think the tail band width looks tood and the main wing bands look a tad on the too wide side.

Think she's done. (I already fixed a few minor things I noticed in these shots. I.E. Invasion stripes on the belly.) But I think I've got her down.

Had to fudge a tad on the kill markings. I could either reduce them in size but they got really fuzzy because the way they are now, the little lines are 1px wide & reducing them made the inner 1px instead of 2px but made the opacity change on the small lines. Not perfect, but it looks better this way than some smudgy blobs.

Gonna submit it tomorrow unless someone sees something that needs fixin'.

Yaaaay! You fixed the "5." :D

I'm a bit disappointed in AmarilloUSAF over that. It's a great font, but the 5 and 7 that were used aren't done in the most common style for those two numbers.

Looking good, but the shading of the panel lines could probably stand some lightening up. That's the one thing I see in a lot of skins and plastic models is emphasis on the panel line detailing. But the thing is, you look at photos of real aircraft and this detail is very subdued.

A good comparison is these two images:

You may also want to stretch the "C" and "5" vertically somewhat. Note the "5" is taller on the bottom section than the top (ok, yeah, nitpicky, but I'm just a stickler for little details).

Ok, so thanks to Sax I noticed something else. My invasion stripes & squadron ID markings dont' meet the O.D. like they should. So I'll be stretching & moving those.  :furious

Guess it's good I let it sit for a while & came back to look at it.
