Title: About sound packs
Post by: Blammo on March 24, 2008, 02:40:30 PM
I am putting together a sound pack for myself based on the existing ones and other sounds I have found.  I see that some of the filenames will be something like "20mm_1.wav" or "reload2.wav".  My question is, when you have a series of item_# and action#, does the game cycle through those or does it only use wav files with just the "item" or "action".  For instance, do the 20mm_1, 20mm_2, 20mm_3, and 20mm_4 get played in sequence?  Does the reload1 get played sometimes and the reload2 get played next night?  Or, should I just have a file with the name 20mm.wav?

By the way, I used 20mm and reload as examples, bet there are a lot of other files names.

Part of why I am confused it because the 20mm, 30mm and 37mm all have the _# as part of their names, but the M2 starts at M2.wav.

Can anyone explain this to me?  Thanks!

Any ideas on this at all?  Trying to figure this out.  Some of the explosion wavs have a number as well, but seems like only one ever get's played.  Anyknow know how the numbers work with the wave files (or if they mean anything at all)?

Blammo,
Sounds for guns such as the 20mm, 30mm, M2, etc will all have multiple ones, I.E.: 20mm_1, 20mm_2, etc.  This goes for each gun on that plane itself.  If you have say a tempest with 4x 20mm's on it you will have 4 of those files listed.  M2's or machine guns start with M2 and then go to M2_2, M2_3, and so on.  I make on sound for each gun and find it works.  Not 100% sure if you can just toss in one sound or not and it will work, but I just go with my way because it works for me. (not telling you what to do)
As far as explosions, damage, gstrike & hits, you will have multiple ones of those because of the different explosions in the game, such as a plane blowing up or a building blowing up compared to a bomb or flak burst going off.  Damage is hits on your plane, which unless your like me and get one ping and die, you will hear multiple hits on your plane and they will all sound different.  Add different hit sounds to your GV's folder because it is hitting a hard metal/armor so it will sound different.
One of the best ways to do it is to 'listen' to the sounds in the game and when your working on your pack imagine what is going on and what sound you want to here.  That way you will start remembering what sounds come from what shot on your plane, or what explosion your hearing while dive bombing the task group.
If you need any more help let me know.  :salute

Awesome, Sketch.  I appreciate the clarification.  Helps me plan out a little better.

One other thing I wanted to make sure of is that different sounds in game will be based on the different sound files I have in my local sounds folder, correct?  In other words, let's say that I am in a Sherman and have a tankgun sound for it and the enemy is in a tiger and I have a different tankgun sound for tigers.  If I fire I will hear my maingun and if the tiger fires at me I will hear his maingun sound (the one I have for tigers in my sounds folder), right?  That same goes for M2, 20mm, 30mm, etc, correct?

Thank you again!

If an enemy tank fires, you will hear the tankgun.wav sound that is located in the soundpack, but not any individual folders.  It's a global sound for any other tank firing, no matter which tank.  Just how it is at this time.  If you drop individual tankgun.wav sounds into the various tank folders, it only affects the sound you hear from your tank.

To clarify what Ranger is saying.  If you have a sherman with a certain sound in it and fire you will hear that.  But if you have a different sound for a tiger in the tiger's folder, you will hear that.  It is always good to have different sounds for the gv's because you can tell by the engine sound on what is in the area when they are moving and you can't see them, as the gun sound helps as well.... but sometimes that is the last sound you hear before you blow up. :pray
Take the main tankgun.wav sound out of the main sounds folder and have individual ones in the gv folders themselves.
