Title: What does the word "racist" mean.
Post by: mietla on March 25, 2008, 01:45:57 AM
Over and over the word racist is used and abused and as a result it lost all gravity and meaning.

What is your definition of a racist?

Obviously no one would argue the first bullet, and a very few would embrace the last.

What is your definition?

Obama. Has to be. Seen it said here so many times it must be true. Use him as your perfect example.  ;)

Arlo, you are just tiresome. Say something of substance or lay off.

And my original post is sincere. I'd appreciate honest and genuine post. The lame attempts on sarcasm are just that.. lame.

I'd say that none of your bullet points hit it...in fact they're way beyond what I'd consider base racism.
To me racist would be judging anyone, not having interacted with them, just based on their race.

Doesn't seem that complex to me.

would you apply this to other characteristics? like country or origin? a continent? man who wear mascara? women that are masculine? gay people? transsexual people?

Obviously, you are right, you can't (and should not) make a judgement on someone's appearence but what you should (if ever) go for)?

Something of substance or lay off.

Most here should know the definition of racist. Some here would like to apply it at their convenience and with somewhat of a double standard. May I never.

I've been color blind to race my whole life. :)

Not for "racism." Racism is a prejudice against a race. If what you're prejudiced against can be defined as a "race" then it's racism. Nascar an exception.

Dicrimination based upon the behavior of the individual is okay, otherwize we couldn't incarcerate bank robbers.

Discrimination based upon the behavior of the individual is okay in some instances, otherwise we couldn't incarcerate bank robbers.

Hope you didn't mind the edit/clarification (if it accurately describes your stance).

The word discrimination versus the word prejudice seems almost an exercise in rationalization. Behavior includes more than criminal behavior. And even defined "criminal behavior" can be immorally prejudiced.

"The word prejudice refers to prejudgment: making a decision before becoming aware of the relevant facts of a case or event. The word has commonly been used in certain restricted contexts, particularly in the expression 'racial prejudice'. Initially this referred to making a judgment about a person based on their race, before receiving information relevant to the particular issue on which a judgment was being made; it came, however, to be widely used to refer to any hostile attitude towards people based on their race. Subsequently the word has come to be widely so interpreted in this way in contexts other than those relating to race. The meaning now is frequently 'any unreasonable attitude that is unusually resistant to rational influence'.[1] Race, gender, ethnic, sexual identity, age, and religion have a history of in citing prejudicial behavior."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prejudice

" Discrimination on grounds such as race or religion, is generally illegal in most Western democracies, while discriminating between people on the grounds of merit is usually lawful. The latter is more commonly referred to as "differentiating." When unlawful discrimination takes place, it is often described as discrimination against a person or group of people."

Does accepting this:
"one who acknowledges that that are some genetic differences between the "races" (be it purely an apearence or deep inside like being immune to certain diseases)" make one a racist.

Anyway, I must be a racist, I absolutely loath neo-nazis :D
(And if my daughters get hooked up with one sometime far in the future, the poor soal is in for either a brainwash, or a flying lesson...down the stairs!)
