Here are a few screen shots....I really hope that the profile shows the right colors. Ive been thinking about it and its quite possible I saw what I wanted to see....a black poni. The more I look at Guppies picture I think it was really a brown or olive. The color is easy to change however so its not a total lose.
Profile...

The stripes arent quite right and the bottom was having major issues getting the colors to line up. After this I went all the way back to my panel lines and started over but this is a fairly good look at what it could be.

A profile shot...

Photograph of the same plane...

This is a revised version with out the stripes...
Its a work in progress but I thought I would get another persons opinion. I still have the rivet layer and markings to do yet. I dont plan on doing much wear because this would be a relatively new plane and it reflects my personality...
Be gentle.... :D

Your upper surface is awful dark, she looks black, but the aircraft was probably in Olive Drab. Try this for your RGB value: 46 50 17.
You also might want to copy the material file from one of the overall drab/painted Mustangs, as the glossy finish here may throw off the look of your final results, and tone the white down slightly with a very small amount of light gray and yellow.

Is it a olive plane or black?
On my screen it looks black...on the profile and the picture.
BTW...now that Ive unstuck my head from up my backside I realized how bad those profiles are in the screen shots.

I deleted the first 3 screen shots because.....well....they sucked. :lol
I still think the stripes are off a little. I think the horizontal/elevator stripes are a bit wide and the wing stripes might need to get moved around.
Heres the updated version with stripes, and panel lines.

Another angle

It still has some minor issues and final touches are still needed but its looking pretty good I think.

Add about 50 more hours and I'll fly it!
It reminds me of Nomde's Jug Skins.
:aok :aok
Seriously, I really like this skin.
Look at Nomde's skin for color examples.

for my tupence worth
the plane would be drab and depending on the paint and mixing it can fade and look totaly diferent pretty quick.
your panal lines at the moment look a little too bright against the drab just a little, maybe if you adjst the opacity a little it might look better.
Also have you done what was suggested with the material file as thedrab still looks a little glossy, but that might be as you proberly took the photo ofline with the sun at 1200 hours.Try adjusting the time so the sun is a a different angle.
All in all for your first attempt you are doing fine,my first attempt looked like a pigs ass.

You may also consider this for your panel lines:
Make one layer in a dark color, like black. Set the transparency level so you get more of an impression of the line than particularly obvious. Copy and paste this into a new layer, and invert the color so it's white. Move this one pixel towards the forward or leading edge, and one pixel in or out. Which direction you move it will depend on your vantage point from the cockpit.
IE, for the wings, I move the "highlight" layer one pixel outboard, and then one pixel forward. Anything aft of the cocking I move a pixel aft, etc.
Again, set transparency so your highlight layer is more implied than obvious. Remember, panel details are MUCH more subtle in the actual aircraft than is implied by many skins.
Use this same technique with your rivet layer, as well.
When I get home I can post an example from my F4U template to show you what I mean.

Saxman...The panel lines were grey in the second set. Since then I did exactly what you said and and did lighten them. I will post some more pictures when I get the rivets and markings close. Hows that grey and white look?
Rogerdee...I took those offline like you said. In the picture it looks rather glossy over the cowl area so I am undecided on what to do. When you mention material file I have no clue what your talking about. I know it will effect lighting and texture but after that......I have a hard time just changing the colors!
Kermit...I hope to get it done in about 2 days of work. With my son its hard to get adult time! If it some how (by shear miracle) gets in the game I will be flying it nearly all the time. My only regret about doing a poni is there are a lot of nice skins and heavy competion for slots.
Strip(er) Thanks for the help!

material file
ok the material file is what changes the shine and lighting affects.
if you open up the ah folder and open up the folder for the origional p51b you should find a txt document called
material.copy this file and paste it into the folder you have made for your skin. This should give you the same light refelction ect as for the origional p51b skin.

I used this http://www.simmerspaintshop.com/page-RGB-colors-USA.html (http://www.simmerspaintshop.com/page-RGB-colors-USA.html) to create a new palate in photoshop. They've even got a RGB value for faded O.D. You will also notice that the reds, yellows & whites aren't exactly "normal" red, yellow or white, but they use the Federal Standard color chips to get the correct RGB values.
Try using them & I'll bet you'll be impressed with the results like I was.
As for the material file, it's what you modify to change how glossy/flat a plane looks. I'll post my material file I used on this

Thanks Jeep....I saw your skin for a split second and thought we were doing the same one. :)
Those colors will be a big help and the material file will be too. If I see whats going on with it I should be able to figure it out. :salute

Here is the link to mine.. may help you see the difference in color & how the material file will get rid of your shinyness... I had the same problem with my first Jug skins. I'll post a picture if I still have them of before & after.

Jeepin, I'm gonna be picky on your skin.
The wing white ID bands are way too wide. The tail bands are a better width. Both should be the same. The tail white ID bands need to move in about the witdh of the tail band. They are too far out towards the tip.
-
They are the exact same size, I copied the horizontal stab stripes & pasted them over top the wing stripes as a guide. I narrowed them down from what I had before by about 25%.
[edit] I looked at that post again. The first set (picture from the top) is before I revised the stripes. If you scroll all the way down to the shot from underneath, you can see they are the same size. I'll take a shot from above when I get a chance to get your approval. I didn't dismiss your previous post in my thread, I take every gig & weigh it. Yours was justified (as well as Saxman's posts about my 5 that I've changed about 4,000 times now :furious)
:aok :salute
