Title: Ultimate FAIL
Post by: mg1942 on March 27, 2008, 03:28:31 PM
Quote
91%
of Algebra 1 students failed the end-of-semester exam

87%
of Algebra 2 students failed the end-of-semester exam

88%
of Geometry students failed the end-of-semester exam

Clark County School District (Nevada) students tested in January on their grasp of first semester material in high school algebra and geometry didn't just fall short of the mark.

The preliminary report on end of semester exams shows they missed it in a spectacular way.

This is just sad.

There must be an ultimate solution to this...

Considering that it's the 5th biggest district in the country, this fail seems pretty epic to me.

Hard to teach when the class is either not there or busy texting...

1, 2, 20 students fail?  Probably the students fault.

But when more than 87% of students fail at these three things, you have to start to wonder.  Maybe it's not just the students?

There is, teach the kids just what's going to be on the test and make the test a lot easier.  geez.

That's how they do it in most states.

CCSD should try this...

Give students incentives (money) when they complete the following:
* get straight-As
* pass all state/national examinations
* get a decent score on ACT/SAT test

Yeah it's ridiculous, but it works in New York :devil

The teachers should have passed out McDonald's applications with the failed tests.

Once upon a time you needed basic math skills to get a retail job be it McDonalds or anywhere :(

I'd chime in with a comment about the changing of teaching math and there being a right and wrong answer versus teaching math and as long as you try the answer is right method.  But then I'd be adding fuel to the fire and I shouldn't do that.

I was taught the right and wrong answer version, the teachers even used to walk around the class while we were doing stuff and help individuals who appeared to be having difficulty giving them guidance about how to make the equations work. We had big classes too, but I guess we had two things going for us, 1) We tended to have respect for our teachers and 2) because of that the teachers actually gave us the attention we required.
I wonder what has changed?

Most teachers are still like that. There are some who genuinly have no clue. More often than not its the students.

CBass, I am heartened to see the is the case. My youngest sister is an excellent teacher and she gets excellent grades from her classes :)
mietla, one can only get so far blaming the government, I am pretty sure it's not entirely the governments' fault that an alarming number of adolescents are growing up without the basic concepts of accountability and respect.

you are right, I was just sarcastic. It's a combination of factors. We can blame parents (for not being involved), teacher unions (for not striving to hire only the best and making it impossible to fire the incompetent) and the government for throwing money at the problem without any accountability, pushing idiotic concepts like no child left behind and forcing school to spend most money on the least gifted and least intelligent students. If the uniformity is more desirable than the excellence, you have to cater to the least worthy.

There is no reason to believe that suddenly the kids themselves are getting stupider. If anything they are probably smarter with each generation. It is us who teach them to remain uneducated and not to bother themselves with free thinking. Government knows best. "Equality/uniformity" above all else.

The biggest problem is our acceptance of the agenda that everybody is equally gifted, down playing or even punishing the genuine achievement and "dispensing" a self esteem equally to everybody regardless of their abilities, work and achievements.

I believe you've hit the nail on the head there.
Kids are getting exposed to more complex and advanced concepts at an earlier age and as such they need to be stimulated to use their intellects constructively or they will fall into cycles of bad behaviour. We are reaping the benefits of the current "one size fits all" education system.
I blame the PC crowd again (does this evil have no bounds?) for their unrelenting desire not to hurt anyones feelings.

How about those big wooden paddles? I still have a wooden spoon, size XL. Don't have to use it anymore, but it's there if ever necessary.
