Title: Old timer back for a ride :)
Post by: RRAM on March 28, 2008, 02:55:19 PM
Hello everyone.

Many of you might remember me, from the old times. Yep, RAM, the spanish guy who always flew 190s and was famous because of...erm...some "conflictive" things waaaay back ;). Those were fun times now I look back.

Thing is, it's been a LONG long while since I last flew AH. In fact the last time I logged in it was still AH 1, so you get an idea. Today I happened to be talking with a good friend of mine who is still flying AH and I got the desire to give it a try, and see how things have developend in the long time I've been away...so downloading the game I am.

I just stepped in to say "hi" and to ask all those who have been here since AH I, how AH II is, what has changed, and what will surprise me. I see there have been relatively few plane additions since I moved on (couple spitfires and the B-25s) so I guess most of the patches and evolutions have been related with FM and gameplay.
So, well some hints and tips on what has changed since back then will be more than welcome (mostly about the FM/gunnery/etc).

guess that's all. See ya in the skies! :)

RAM... you are going to hate the way the 190s are now.

Fly something else.  Anything else.

Other than that, the games about the same.  Some rides got tweaked (the runstangs worse, the 190s are worse, the 109s are better, the F4Us are amazing).  Some new planes, none that see much use.  Some new versions of old planes.

lol airspro. Yes, I'm back... I'm glad the 190s are modelled the same as before, BTW. They weren't perfect, they won't be perfect right now. But what am I going to do...I love them Würgers  :).

Hey Urchin!. Thanks for answering. Just curious, in which ways are the 190 worse than back in AH1?. Performance-wise the charts in the info pages haven't changed...guess it's something related with the FM and energy performances...well, I'll see it soon I guess.
Glad to know the 109 are a bit better now...the F4U was already a killing machine back in the times I was here...if it's even better now...well, wow :). It's my 2nd favorite plane of all time (guess which is the first :D), so I'll definitely give it a ride.

Widewing posted some comparitive pics of the 190A5's turning circle from AH1 to the revision of AH2 where they took the massive performance hit... think the turn radius got something like 20% bigger with flaps down.  It affected all of the 190s, not just the A5.

The 190s used to be tough to knife fight in.  Now they are impossible to knife fight in.  Medium bombers have better handling and smaller turning circles.

I would recommend indulging your secret desire to fly the new Spits instead :).

The 109s did get better though, the F4 is a mean plane in a knife fight, the K-4 (our old G-10) handles nearly as well and is still a mean energy fighter.  The 109s do have some godawful torque when you get slow with the nose up, so its better to just roll to the left instead of trying to force it to roll right.

Enjoy your time back - the DA usually has people just playing around fighting.. I find that more interesting than the MA most nights.

hm. I'll do a search to find that info, Urchin. Depends on the speeds we're talking about, I can agree with a bigger turning circle for the A5. The strong point in close fighting with Fw190s should be tremendous initial turn rate, degrading as speed goes down. That the A5 has a bigger turn ratius at low speed than in AH1 does not concern me as long as at high and medium speeds the turn rate compensates for it. At low speeds you were dead meat in AH1 with a 190, and I guess it will be only worse now. Nothing unexpected on this end ;).

With the A8 I'm a bit concerned, as it already was a terrible turner back in AH1. But I'll try to find the comparative you're speaking of before making up my mind (and of course trying the planes aswell).

The DA will be forbidden area for me until I get used to flying again. Other than very rare days with Oleg's games (I struggle to call them simulators), I haven't flown simulators for almost 5 years now, so I got a lot of rust to shake off before I can fly 1 on 1s succesfully :)

And again, thanks and hello to all those who greeted me back ;).

LOL Frodo!...nope, they never got an interest in planes or computer games. Difficult to get them playing something like AH...
Anyway, they're both happily married now, so they're out of range for you all dirty minded n00bs!!!!  :rock hehhehehe

I don't fly much anymore really, but the Mossie's CoG issue was fixed and it no longer bursts into flame when somebody looks at it aggressively.  Pretty tough bird now.

Once I get an internet connection back I'll play a bit.

Straighten up, pilot! Get your flight suit cleaned up and report for duty!  :)

Hey RAM! How you doing? Really long time no see. Now we just have to get Santas big bellybutton in the cockpit and the Wuerger will rule the skies again!  :rofl

Ah, well, the memories...  been tempted to come back now and then... but no rig (or place for that matter) to seriously fly any sim. But who knows what the future holds.

What a coincidences I thoughlessly typed www.hitechcreations.com into the browser just today...

The 190s are light years ahead of where they used to be.

It's not the turn radius. It's the stall handling and AoA at stall. Used to be even the slightest Gs at 250mph or so would snap-stall you. Made it very hard to try turning.

Now you can get slow with the rest (to a degree). I'm not saying to try and stall fight folks, just that your wing won't snap-stall until you ACTUALLY stall this time.

Much improved.

If you're used to the old cockpits, you're in for a rude awakening, though!

Well, did my first rides in the arena...lots of good impressions but for now I'm happy with taking off, flying here and there ,trying not getting killed and landing...

I'm so out of form it hurts, lol.

I've tried both the D9 and the A8. With the D9 I felt untouchable as long as I did no stupid things, and with the A8 I didn't feel clumsy at all. other than my natural clumsiness after so much time being out of play. I have to get tuned to the planes again anyway, as I don't really know how to push them to the limits any longer.

and yeah, krusty, I noticed the cockpits and have been quite a nasty surprise. But I guess they were a bit too permisive back in AH1, and with a good tuning of the views they aren't that big of a problem.

But the main problem is that ,if back in the time I used to play AH I was a terrible shoot, now it's even worse. I've missed straight shots on planes hanging on the prop and almost stopped in the sky. I'm quite embarrased, lol. But I guess I'll get better (I'm using a different control set I used back on the times, so that might explain it too.but still...)

I've seen some old hands online. Whels (who is a noob ;)) for instance. And I've got killed by grendel twice. One thing surprises me...no general channel anymore?...hard to say hello that way. But anyway, <S> for the kills, grendel, if you read this lines.

Kirin!!!!! pal it's been a LONG while?. Where's Santa?...and Hristo?...and all the old JG54 hands?. Would be cool to do a nice comeback in force; JG54 roaming the skies again, hehehehe. Those were good times doing free hunts all in A8s ;).

PD: Wilbus is a NOOB!  :rofl ;)

Gotta log for a while now. See ya in the skies :)

200 is the new channel 1.  Channel 1 got closed for abuse.
You missed Apar by a month or so, he just quit from burn out.  It sounded like he was done for good.

But the main problem is that ,if back in the time I used to play AH I was a terrible shoot, now it's even worse. I've missed straight shots on planes hanging on the prop and almost stopped in the sky.

AH1 used hit bubbles. I was regularly pinged by 50cal planes at 1k, and hispano armed planes at 1.2 (1.3 was the "safe" zone)

That's no longer the case. Luckily (much more realistially!!!!!) you can expect to get in to less than 400 yards for a decent hit, and 600 is really pushing it. Set your convergence to 350 and work for shots at that distance. You might eventually reduce it even more to fit your comfort zone.

thanks for the info, moot.

Krusty, I missed a corsair hanging on the prop, perfect plantform shot, firing a burst from 400 to 200 yards before pulling up. I didn't hit him at all.

I understand (and like) the change of hit modelling from hit bubbles to actual impacts on the plane, but this time I'm pretty sure it's not the game, it's that I SUCK!

lol
