Title: I hadda do it .. really!
Post by: Grayeagle on March 29, 2008, 02:45:39 AM
I had Xtreme Motorsports in Tempe put some Billy Boat bullets on the Vette.

Ear Candy.

Loud is a direct function of the pedal on the right. .. Very Loud is all the way down.
(it sent chills when I wound her up a bit today .. oooo .. . aaaaaa ... I *like* the sound of a nice runnin V-8)

Now I need a reasonable cam (and kit) .. for the lumpy idle of course.
(altho . cruisin at 40 in 3rd it has a little bit of the rumble beginnin and sounds *great*)

Off the line .. oh man.
I have *missed* that sound.

I find myself chirpin the back tires a lot more :)

A mid-life Chrysler with loud pipes running past me always makes me think, "Wow, he's not that bald at all, AND MAN, is he cool! I also wonder where he went to High School so I could find his classmates on MySpace and say "Check out Greyeagle! He is the bomb!"

And I wish those pipes were louder as if we were all 16 again when I'm reading a book acting 40 in bed. You should put on glass paks or cherry bombs! Ear candy baby! VVVVVRRROOOOOM!

I drive a rusty gray 89 Volvo with faded paint, hail damage, leaks stuff and 175,000 miles.  I wish it got 22 mpg; maybe if I took off the studded snow tires and big padded roof rack…

My sunroof crank doesn’t work, but I can still slide the roof open and closed.  Of course it doesn’t seal and rail drips on my head.  My radio doesn’t work and once my bumper fell off.

Yes .. Diablo and I should 'hook up' some weekend for a car show or just a cruise and compare notes :)

What year is it?

Well .. ok . since you asked, I have some pix taken before I put the trash cans out the back :)

'98 Z-51 with a 3.15 gear (performance axle ratio for that year), automatic so I can bracket race,
(http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q260/1grayeagle/my%20vette/Sunrise.jpg)

gets 30mpg at 70mph, even 24 in city drivin,
(http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q260/1grayeagle/my%20vette/IMG_0604.jpg)

goes hi 13's out here at Speedworld (alla mustang GT's are runnin high 14's out here ..altho an SRT-8 Magnum wagon ran a very cool high 12 against me durin time trials .. man that Hemi sounded good too :) (it wasnt stock) ..and there was a lil caged up Supra with a huge turbo stuffed under the hood goin 8's ..in the quarter.. parachute an all.

And for the crude remarks ..well .. I have to wonder if there's even any hair on their balls yet, because they sure don't 'sound' mature enough.

Anyone can drive a POS .. I choose not to.

an automatic???  so you can bracket race?

The excuses I hear from the old guys like me for the automatics in their sports and muscle cars is that they get "tired" pushing in the clutch.

I tell em.. "maybe you can hire a kid to drive the car for you like you hired all the guys to build it."

ROFL Laz .. my Duster was an automatic ..and for the same reasons.

A heck of a lot more consistent in a 1/4 mile, I made money with it almost every weekend.
Easier on drivetrain.
I can run right to the redline for every shift ..and never miss one.
Ever.
I can come off the line just as hard or harder than a 'stick' car.
I never have to replace a throwout bearing or a clutch disc.
For all that I give up 10-15hp.
Deal.
Next?

Creamo and AWMac should get a room, must be true love.
LOL.

well.. if all you ever did was bracket race the car as a professional.. I would tend to see your point.

I don't think that is what you do with the car even one percent of the time tho.  It is also a.... vette.

not a duster or even a mustang.. a vette.   Now, I know you must realize that it is meant to go around corners more than quarter mile once every few months..  I KNOW you know how much fun it is to drive a 6 speed through the mountains and around town.

I have a Lincoln Towne car and it has an automatic in it... very fitting trans for that car.. I escort the little mexicans in the car.(grand daughter in back seat girlfriend in front seat... only my head shows).

For fun cars..  I insist on a stick.   6 speed in el camino big block and 4 speed in old school small block Healey.. both are 12 sec cars.  I don't care about bracket racing..  I will race grudge night stuff straight up tho.  just like the old days.   I don't like any race where you lose if you go too fast.

Aye Laz .. I know how much fun a stick is.

I enjoy runnin the Vette up and down Yarnell Hill now an then for twisty fun :)
I use ..well ..not to put too fine a point on it .. the 'brakes'.. because that's what they're for,
instead of downshifting.. and the auto picks the correct gear comin out of the apex just as fast as I could have.

The guy in the Z06 went by me for sure .. he's runnin about a hundred more ponies to the ground out back
and he used them very well to pass me on a short straight :) ..it was a nice run and he got a lil sideways into the next corner but it's two lanes same direction of travel so he had the room to get straightened out while I backed off a bit, .. fun stuff :)

There's a 200mph club that I am gonna work on joining .. I have to do quite a bit to the car to make it happen.
Cam and kit so she'll take the revs to push past 200 ..cage for safety, the rest is in place already :)
They run on the hiway, closed off by the Highway Patrol for the day, out in Nevada somewhere I hear .. even some twisties to do..web site has all the info.
(search 200mph club ..for you bikers out there, take a look at the list .. umm .. not a whole lot of two wheelers listed, even at 150mph)

-GE aka Frank (been to 127 on my '78 Gold Wing .. frame starts to wobble at 120 or so..gets worse as you go faster .. been to 125 on my '88 1100 Shadow, wind drag/buffet is *rough* at that speed and that was with a shorty windscreen ..sold both of them long ago to go work at Kesmai, after puttin 180k miles on them, rode every day from hi-desert down to LA basin to work an back)

Keith Turk is a friend of mine from the modified Healey club and is in about 5 200 mph clubs.   Great guy.

Vettes have always made lousy drag racers.. especially after IRS came in.   the irs is weak and set up wrong.. the weight transfer with anything like stock suspension is horrible and..  why ruin a good car?

you want to put a live rear end in it 9" Ford say, and a 60's econoline straight axle in the front.. 4.88 gears and a two speed powerglide and 5,000 rpm stall converter.. then you have a bracket racer.

There is a reason you don't see the sports car club racers with those automatics that you say shift better than you do.   The transmission is not just a brake substitute.

Laz .. dint say better .. said as well as..

As for sports cars .. well .. Chapparal had a few that won LeMans .. Chebbies . . and automatics.

As for 'ruining' a good car .. -shrug- .. I been doin that for years.

I would be willin to bet there are some that tell you you 'ruined' that Healey puttin a chebby into it :)

Once again, I find it amusing what others should say your car should be.

GE is it the Silver State Classic you refer to?  I always thought that looked like a blast.  I think you will find you need substantially more than a cam and some valve train work to get to 200 though.

Well . . bein as how several club members have already done well over 200mph by puttin a cam and kit into the motor so it will actually rev past the 6k redline, and some heads that will flow decently at higher rpm ranges, .. it looks very doable.
The car tops out now at 187mph due to hittin the rev limiter.. -evil grin- .. and it doesnt take long to do it.
Used a heck of a lot of road in a hurry!

Fact: C-5 takes 50hp to do 100mph.
Simple aerodynamics says double the speed, quadruple the horsepower to do it.
I've 'already' got the horses at 350.
Not enough gear available to gear it to run 6k at 200 (they dont make 2.0's :)
..so .. have to mod the motor to turn more rpm.
(stock valvesprings are good for 6k rpm max ..Z-06 motor is a little better at 6500-7k I hear..but if I am gonna get cam and springs ima go a little more than 'stock' Z-06 specs .. I've always enjoyed cammin a motor up a bit past 'the norm' and workin a bit of magic on air intake to make it sing)

Then the computer needs to be told about the new toys .. and I'll be set :)
(well ..after the roll bar, belts, and other required safety bits :)

Plus.. you cant just sign up and go .. you have to work thru all the lesser speed runs first to verify your car and you are up for the deed.
All in all .. it will take awhile . . but .. yer right .. it looks like a BLAST :)

(in fact there isnt a whole lot of straights on the runs .. its mostly twisties I hear :) .. they just clock you for the 'Club' entries on the straights, and usually they are over a mile long :)

-Frank aka GE (learnin all about it from some that have done it .. we got a couple in the club in 'the Club' :)

OK, H/C/I now were talkin!

Please don't take this the wrong way as I'm not trying to be argumentative, just a bit confused.  Do you already have some work done to this car?  187 out of an early non-z06 c5 just doesn't seem quite right to me, especially one running high 13's.  I know AZ is hot and that track has a bit of altitude but it just doesn't jive in my head.  Granted I have been out of the car game for a while now so the memory is a bit fuzzy.
Title: Re: I hadda do it .. really!
Post by: Grayeagle on April 05, 2008, 02:17:15 AM
Ya .. the 13's I run at Speedworld would probably be high 12's at ATCO or some other decent tracks.
It's not that it's just hot .. the startin line is slicker than any street I've cut loose on.
I ran a 13.98 with outside air temp at 113 degrees -evil grin- ..spinnin the tires for a good 30 feet out, and spinnin a bit again when I hit 2nd.

The guys that are hookin up there are runnin 14" slicks and alla go fast toys.

Trap speed is right at 100mph .. and she's hits 3rd gear about the first mph lite.

3.15's and 26" dia tires ..I need 3.70's at least to use all of 3rd gear .. forget 4th all together.
To put the extra torque to the ground is another project ..
..tubs, stickier, bigger tires ..
..I hear there's a mod to use 15" wheels so I can hang 'real' racin tars out the back
-evil grin-
.. man ..
..I would love to back half the car, 4-link a Dana under there, and stuff 14x32's up under there ..

I mean.

You leavin the TC on and just mashing it, or do you turn it off and use your left foot on the brake to load the converter?
Title: Re: I hadda do it .. really!
Post by: Grayeagle on April 06, 2008, 08:37:27 PM
TC on, foot onna brake..no loading the converter at all.

I prolly should load it up a little to reduce the wheelspin
(hopefully ..street tires are pretty much a waste at hookin up unless they're drag radials or better on these cars I have read)

I've come off some stoplights at wide open throttle givin the vette all she's worth and not even a chirp some late nights and no traction control warnings at all .. after the tires are warmed up from a coupla miles of driving.

Speedworld is like a slick parkin lot on cold tires :)
Still fun to play . . still a second faster than most mustangs I see there -evil grin-

Just for chits and giggles give this a try.  Turn off your traction control, left foot on the brake, load the converter to the RPM just before the back tires start spinning.  On the third yellow lift off brake foot, keep gas foot where it is, the nose of the car will obviously come up just a bit and as you feel the nose start coming back down ROLL on the power.  Practice it in an empty parking lot or something first to get the feel for it and the timing down.  This is by far the most effective way I have found to launch, and although my car certainly doesn't compare to a Vette, it did come from the factory with 345 ft/lbs so it takes some finesse to get out of the hole quick.

Geary .. dood.

Great description of how to feather off the line.

Coupla things you may or may not know about my Vette .. with traction control off, it goes a tenth slower.
Gettin up on the converter, it goes just under a tenth slower.
It's just how she works at Speedworld.
 ..and..
I 'like' just punchin it :)

(remembers featherin it when the steering hit the lock as the Duster got all the way sideways in 2nd gear ..and ridin it till she hooked, then jammin 3rd and doin the same ..back when it was a 4-gear on street tires, scared the wife no end ..pure tire smokin fun :)

I will set the car up for doin just that ..will take awhile.
I bracket raced for a long time -decades-.. and street raced for even longer
(still remember the first street race I won like it was yesterday, 1968)
Got invited to the Bracket Finals 4 years in a row runnin for LACR long ago.

I am a gearhead from wayback ..
I can still tune a tunnel-ram w/two fours to come off idle and bend yer teeth back in an automatic car
.. only 'bog' will be time it takes for the tires to hook.

Alla gee-whiz formula's and tuner-talk about CFM required per cubic inch
..my motors were always 'over-carbuerated'
..would still come right off idle and wing to redline without missin a beat
..pull so hard they'd scare wimmens and chilluns
..too much is almost enough ..always.

-grin-
