Title: Earth Hour
Post by: Donzo on March 29, 2008, 06:58:13 PM
So.....what's everyone's big plans this evening for "Earth Hour"?

Will HTC be shutting the servers down for the hour between 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm (I hope not!)

Personally, I will have every light in my house that is visible to the outside turned on.  In addition to that I have a couple of 500 W halogen lamps that I will have plugged in illuminating the outside of the house.

I hope this contributes to "global warming", I'm tired of the cold weather.

The first I heard of Earth Day was today when someone called the TV station where I work at and wanted to know if we were going to shut down the transmitter for an hour. I spent 20 minutes trying to tell them that the power cost of shutting the thing down, cooling it, and then restarting it would be 3 times as much than if we just left it running at 75% power. Needless to say they didn't buy it and said that it was my fault Earth was dying. I really think they were just unhappy with cooking show we had running and they didn't know how to operate a TV remote.

Oh wait that's just the Microwave.

most of the heavily populated areas, containing the people who would actually do this, are supplied by hydro or nuclear power.

Relax all you liberal phobics. It is no conspiracy.

This earth hour is just a good intention spent in a stupid way. It is sometimes embarrassing how my fellow liberals "stupidfy" some issues in order to sell them to the public.

Indeed it was a stupid pointless exercise. The averred intention was to raise peoples awareness of climate change as if that particular subject wasn't already rammed down our throat on a daily basis.

Besides, I already had my Earth 12 hours when I had a power cut the other night.

Not integrated into a national powergrid?

Your comment was funny  :lol but i think you know that the entire earth hour thing is just to put it on the agenda, and not to acutally save anything.

Back to serious. I think its odd that even one single person on the planet thinks saving power is stupid. Fine, you may not belive that saving power does anything for the enviroment, but using less of it will have an impact on your wallet. Even a capitalist should get that ;)

if .2 % of the population observes EARTH hour it will take the energy equivelant of 14 hours to shut down and restart distibution stations, feeder plants, recharge transformer stations, system personel will have to work over time to monitor the fluctuations in the system at off hour times, hence overtime for those workers and extra gas to come in for work, extra hot water for the shower to wash off the disgust! and some alarming nights lack of sleep while they ponder how making all this extra work saved anything!

My celebration was an anti wack job protest! I turned on all my lights, electric appliances and fired up AH! We are supposed to protect the environment and go green then why is it that if my grass gets to high the city fines me $75 for not cutting it?  :(

Exactly. Just like all the rest of the man made global warming scare tactics. At least that's what Al Gore said.

No no take the fanatics out of the equation. I dont agree with either extreme ends on this topic.

Are you unsure, indifferent or do you have an opinion?

I think it could be possible for people to have an affect on our climate but I remain highly skeptical. Primarily I suppose because I believe the loudest proponents of mmgw have ulterior motives.

When results don't go your way, question whether or not the experts know what they are talking about:

Quote
Some 3,000 scientific robots that are plying the ocean have sent home a puzzling message. These diving instruments suggest that the oceans have not warmed up at all over the past four or five years. That could mean global warming has taken a breather. Or it could mean scientists aren't quite understanding what their robots are telling them.

That's pretty much what I agree with.  Until these people who shout about Man Mad Global Warming aren't anti-corporation to begin with, then they will NEVER have my trust.

That is until Earth suddenly combusts from all the methane we produced.  When that happens, I'll be the one in hell sitting there thinking, "Well, toejam."
