Everyone should give the field guns a try.
Now that the Osti's view is less than useful, may I suggest getting in one of these instead of the ubiquitous wirbel when ground-based defense is in order? For the forseeable future, there will always be plenty of wobblies coming out of the VH, one might as well be different and get in a field gun before they are all taken out. I manned one awhile last night with good results, including one 5 kill sortie, in which NONE of the attackers were actually flying directly towards me. Hits included de-tailing an F6F flying overhead at 1.5k and credit for one kill and one assist on a formation of buffs that passed more or less overhead and were never closer than 2.5K, (and I'm far from being a gunnery god). That's REACH and power the wobbly can't touch. Don't believe what you hear, you CAN hit deflection shots with the 37mm, and unlike a wobbly, one ping means one kill. A wirbel won't usually be able to stop an accurate divebomber before he releases his egg, a 37mm boulder just might.
So give it a try, use Zazen's method, and just keep pumping plenty of rounds into the air at any target under 2.5K. You might be surprised how well you do.

Mhmm, when you're not looking, a good gunner hops in one of the manned guns and blows you away...

What the hell?? :huh

I managed 10+ kill sortied in a field gun the other night... it was one of the best times I've had on the ground in AH
-
last night i had a 8 kill, but it was in a ship gun. but i wasnt using the 5'', i was using the quad 40mm

I've had virtually no luck in a field gun when it comes to shooting down aircraft, but you would be amazed at their lethal range on gv's (excluding Tigers of course).

:huh
This emoticon really does fit you! :aok

Not to hijack this away from field ack but have you guys manned the 5 inch guns yet since the patch? They are absolutely deadly. One ping under 2K is not a kill, but a vaporization.

That's always been truth I thought. At least when Whels or the other insane gunners were manning them. Hell I think Whels got me from further than that on a regular basis.

13 gv kills yesterday in one sortie. Not even a tiger is a problem to it.

I've only ever been able to track a Tiger. The biggest problem with the field guns is that they're destroyed by not much more than someone dropping a sandwich on 'em.

i got a 14 kill yesterday in one and then had to reup because i was outta ammo lol
i love field guns

37mm field guns are good... 5" naval guns are LEATHAL! It now takes a coordinated effort to sink a task group. I think it adds more realism to the game when the ack can actually kill you, unlike the psudo-ack in days past. The best way to stop a vulch (i.e. break up a CAP) is to man the soft guns, up as many osties and werblewinds as you have defenders... and alakazamm CAP lost! It is easy to kill soft guns... as long as they aren't manned! A word of caution... bring lost of cheeze for all the whines you'll get on 200 after the vulchers "fun" is over!
