Title: Damage model -- wingtip versus runway
Post by: Simaril on March 31, 2008, 08:39:12 PM
Anybody know the answer to this? Those nearly ground looped landings, where the wingtip touches and you hear the scraping sound...does the game treat that like flying through definitely exploded debris (clang, clank effect but no damage), or is the scraping actually causing non-catastrophic damage which would make it easier for gunfire to finish that "hit box" off?

I'm not certain, but I would say that it doesn't make it any weaker, or at least that's been the case in my experience.

I believe it makes it weaker. I've hit one or two runways and seen the damage decal on the wing. Usually it's hard to see unless you have F3 view.

I'm pretty sure it's damage, just not total damage.

Debris collision doesn't do any damage. :huh Hmmmm...I could have sworn I have been hit by a B24s wing after I sheared it off.

I swear I've been hit by debris and gotten a "you have collided message" :huh

depends if you hit the bit with a pilot sill in it or not.

Sim, good question, i have wondered the same before. if you scrape a wing on take off is it a good idea to auger and get a fresh one? i usualy die either way.

ON the debris question:

As I recall, the Coader himself has said that random debris is an effect, not part of the actual aircraft. On the other hand, anything attached to the enemy pilot IS considered an enemy object and is subject to collision rules. So, after blasting away and leaving only the cockpit -- you can fly through the wings and empennage, but if you hit the cockpit remains you've got collisions. Parachutes? Same thing.  Having spent

If you shoot off a bomber wing and "collide with it" the most likely thing happening is that the plane has rolled sharply to the weak side (less lift on bad side, good side rises). you're probably hitting the still attached wing root of the bomber that's rolled toward you, with maybe a little lag effect that throws off what you're seeing.

i have scraped & actually pivited on wing tip but my main scrapes with the ground has been my tail... causing dust/water trails.

i have flown away from them with no (apperent) damage but there  has been times that i hit a little harder & recieved damage

i belly in when landing kills & again the same....softly & no damage, flop to 1 side & recieve wing damage or tail damage.

i think there is prolly some sort of damage effect to aircraft at any speed but its more to do with force of contact.

then again im only assuming :)

I just don't know.  Be nice to find out for sure.  I don't use auto-takeoff and sometimes when I'm not paying attention I'll scrape a wing tip on takeoff.  I have not seen any damage show up in the damage list, but does it add up?  Should I land and get a new plane?  Be nice to know for sure.

As long as you don't do any structural damage, don't worry about the scrapes.  They'll buff right out.

Id be interested in knowing this for sure.  And about the debris pieces from buffs... i always thought they would cause damage, sure sounds like it when you clank into a piece!

Debris don't cause damage (unless you hit something that still has a pilot attached to it).
