There's an incredible girl coming to see me just before I take off for Iraq. I need to show her an unforgettable time so that she's thinking about me as much as I'll be thinking about her while I'm over there. I've got 3 days... she flies in on Tuesday morning and leaves Friday morning.
Here's what I've got so far: pick her up from the airport in Austin on Tuesday, spend the day in Austin or maybe head to College Station, which she also wants to see. Probably head back to Killeen that night, as I have to go in to work for a few hours Wednesday morning. After that... we've got most of the day Wed, all day Thurs, and then I have to get her back to the airport Friday morning.
A bit about her: she loves road trips, camping, hiking, and generally outdoorsy stuff. She's an explorer, whether it's little New England villages, big cities, or out of the way parks. She wants to try a Texas steak and loves red wine, so I'm thinking I need to find a good steakhouse in Austin.
Besides that, I just need options. State parks, or anything else that's generally cool. Just throw me some ideas, please. It's important enough to ask on an internet game bulletin board. :)

Several good Steak Houses in Austin....
Take her to to Downtown....U.T. is there and you'll see plenty of "Differant" types down there. Zilker Park is pretty good. Colorado River is right down town. If time permits...take her to the Hill country...Burnet...llano...BB Q. THE BEST!!!!!

Sea Food try Captains....on I35 near Baby A's. GREAT BROILED CRAWFISH!!!!!
BBQ local...Elgin...Southside Market....
The Hill country drive would be nice...Lake Buchannan...
Lake Travis....Go out 620 tho...prettier drive....Highway 2222 to 620 would be REAL nice drive.
Baby A's has margarittas...pretty good....Carlos and Charlies out on the Lake...not bad....

Does she have a sister???

I've already been there, clerick, and I wouldn't dream of subjecting her to that (or going through it again myself).
Sorry Diablo, she's an only child. :)

What about San Antonio?
Riverwalk & all of the nice restaurants that includes are unforgettable. :) If you go there, Dick's Last Resort is a fun place :) Fredricksburg is awesome (includes the Hangar Hotel, which is worth a google search ~ you'd love that place too *grin*)
Don't be too stressed out about taking her to the perfect places though, Tarmac. If she's traveling to see you by plane before you leave, it's you that she wants to see... not the local sites. :) So no matter where it is that you choose to go ~ enjoy ~ and take a camera so you both have photos to take away with you of your visit with one another! :)
Oh, there's this awesome *pick your own* farm in Marble Falls, which is also some of the most beautiful country I've seen.
We pick blueberries & strawberries by the bucket when in season. They rotate fields, so there's ALWAYS something to pick. Also, they've got the most awesome pumpkin patch in Texas :) I'll have to look up the name of it later & add it on. Y'all youngsters don't get out & do that stuff... so it would be a nice change of pace :) and a surprise :)

You could build a fence.

Back in July of 1990, I spent 30 days in the sticks of Mexico. Best trip ever. On the way in, I went to the HRC on Lemon St.(?) [seeing David Gilmour's Black Strat was worth that trip in itself.] and 6 flags in Arlington. On the way back, went to The Alamo. Poured arse rain so bad, that picnic tables were being swept away by the current and a Semi trailer was under water on I-10(?), the water was up to the rim of the trailer.
For the hour we were at The Alamo, it stopped raining. Quite possibly the most "powerful" place I have been to. Envisioning what transpired over those 13 days is still tough to comprehend. Being outnumbered and still able to kick arse like that knowing "what the outcome will be" flows over. My father teared up as I (17 at the time) put $40 in the bin for them to help maintain it. I hope to take my son there in a few years and explain to him why it really is "The Cradle of Liberty". Every American should see this before "they leave".
I also remember there being a Pizza Hut right across the street with the then "new lunch buffet".

What's your point? Oh, you left out "nekkid".

Hey Tarmac, I've got a "fun things in central texas" book. There's lotsa places in there, with hours of operation, cost, contact information, and driving directions, etc.
If interested, you can have the book. I've got a couple copies, and wouldn't mind giving you a copy.
-
Yeah, txmom, I'd be interested in seeing that book. Even if not for this trip it would be a cool resource to have, as I need to get out and explore Texas more.
We've focused in on the area west of Austin. Sounds like there are lots of lakes for scenery and possibly canoeing, camping areas, hiking areas, a winery, and some other cool stuff over there.
Some things that caught her eye:
Canyon of the Eagles (camping)
Fall Creek Vineyard
Pedernales Falls state park
Lake Austin
New Braunfels (canoeing, kayaking)(as lizking said, weather could be hit or miss but canoeing could be pretty safe)
Any feedback on those, or any other cool stuff to see/do in that area?
-
Yep, book is divided by their direction from Fort Hood. :)
Off in that direction, there's info on:
West has Highland Lakes Air Museum
Sulphur Springs
Colorado Bend
Canyon of Eagles
Vanishing River Cruise
Lake Cruise
Lake Buchanan
Fort Croghan
Nightingale Archeological Center
Inks Lake State Park
Enchanted Rock
Longhorn Caverns
Reimer's Fishing Ranch
West Cave Preserve
Hamilton Pool
Krause Springs
Pedernales Falls
The Exotic Resort & Zoo
Johnson City
Luckenback TX
LBJ State Park
Fredericksburg (Adm. Nimitz Museum, Walk of Pacific War, Japanese Garden of Peace)
There are 5 other lists, depending on what direction you want to go in.

Would you mind if I borrowed that book, or can you tell me where to get it? Sounds like a good one to help pick some spots out, or maybe even bring along on this trip to thumb through.
-
I've got like 3 copies, so you can have one. I'll give it to my husband to take to work (III Corps bldg). I'll ask him to just keep it in his office. Whenever you can stop by there to pick it up, I'll PM you his ph#. Just call to make sure he's in the office when you stop by. :)
Sent the info by PM to you.
