I forgot about this great quote...
In June 1998, Heston was elected president of the National Rifle Association, for which he had posed for ads holding a rifle. He delivered a jab at then-President Clinton, saying, "America doesn't trust you with our 21-year-old daughters, and we sure, Lord, don't trust you with our guns."

Don't give him the attention he wants Donzo. He obviously knows not a thing about Charlton. I know this much, last I heard about Charlton in 2002 was that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I also know he isn't suffering anymore.

Just goes to show how much Liberals hate true Americans.
I'd say his military service makes him a true American. Can't say i agreed with some of his political views throughout the years. Should i not say so just because he is dead?
-
Charlton Heston was an Indian?
I did not know that.
Heston was born in Illinois, not India. And the Native Americans were not originally from the Americas either.
Someone who just got their Citizenship and believes in the Constitution is more of an American then someone born here that doesn't support it.

I'd have to disagree... but hell, I'm just a veteran.
Measuring patriotism is just about as silly as measuring noodlees.
Back on topic... I watched lots of Charlton Heston movies as a kid. I always liked Omega Man even though it was rather silly. Can't say he did much after the mid-70's that I cared to watch.

He was a right wing loon but he also was a great actor. I've always appreciated his acting talent regardless of his politcal position, unlike some here who will denegrate a good actor just because of their political position.

Wow. Havent seen that many Skuzzifications in a long time without the thread being locked.
Guess either not everyone liked Heston. Or someone said something that really touched a nerve.
Oh well.
Regardless.
One of the last old school hero type, movie stars.
I kinda miss that genre.
Thought it was kinda creepy the amount of religeous type movies he made . But enjoyed them all none the less.

<S> to charleton heston. I'm surprised that no one has posted that before the civil rights issue became cause celebre in hoolywood he stood for the rights of all people and did so openly. the man was the personification decency, irrespective of his chosen profession and the pressures he must have faced for his views from his peers.

One of my deleted posts did. He marched with MLK and picketed for Civil Rights.

First off, its really sad see all the editted comments this morning. I can only guess that SOME of those comments that were editted were attempting to insult a political icon who's flagship was the 2nd amendment. That's very sad, and perhaps you should think before posting, what this man has done to keep our 2nd amendment freedoms in place.
Secondly, it saddens me to see Chuck leave this earth spiritually. May he RIP.

Yah, some guys ya just love their on-screen persona--Spencer Tracy WAS a great actor, and I always liked his movies (the original 3:10 to Yuma is my fav) No one would compare John Wayne with Sir Lawrence Olivia, but I never saw a movie a movie of his (or Heston's) which I didn't like. The modern day models--Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, the little short enviro-nut from Titanic....they are all selected FIRST and FOREMOST as models, then if they can perhaps act their way out of a paper bag, so much the better. Does anyone think Ernest Borgnine would be given a leading role in a movie today? Richard Widmark? Humphry Bogart.....so many others of their ilk would never be heard of today, sad

led.. I have no idea about what you said except that you didn't like his political views.
You are aware that he marched alongside the original civil rights leaders and was very active in civil rights?
He was a very well written man also.. it would serve you well to read some of his thoughts.. they do not differ much from mine. He was a lover of individual freedom. He was not himself toward the end which is so much more the tragedy.
He really was a perfect fit for such movies later in life like Planet of the Apes... Omega man and soylent green.

Johnny Depp's movies where he isn't redoing something that was origanally done by one of the Hollywood greats' aren't bad. However, his Willy Wonka portrayal in Charlie and the Choclate Factory Made me go out and buy the original to make sure my kids' saw how it was done right. Depp's Wonka was not good at all; I found Gene Wilder's portrayal much closer to the book. (Hijack: off)

Charleton Heston was a great actor and a great man. He will be missed by many, many people. He would be a suitable role model for many of the today's young people by the strength of his convictions and zeal for life. His life's accomplishments and the respect he commanded are truly to be admired.
To George Clooney, Bill Mohr, and Alec Baldwin: You publicly expressed glee at the news Heston had contracted Alzheimers. You were giddy that a fellow human being was going to die in such a slow horrible manner. Are you still happy today? How will you face your death when the time comes? Will you do it with diginity and character, or will you make the talk-show rounds, do Oprah, blame conservatives, and otherwise cry, whine, and wring every last molecule of pity, sympathy, and attention out of your situation? Nevermind. I think everyone already knows the answer to that.
Peace be with you Charleton Heston.

They just ran the Planet of the Apes on cable about 2 weeks ago. *no pun intended*
Kinda spooky now to hear of his passing.
I loved all of his stuff on the Bible.

A True Man of works and deeds.

George Clooney was later applauded by his comments by both Charlton and his wife, in terms of sincere apology. That fence was mended. But for Bill Mohr and Alec, it's baggage they'll have subconsciously for the rest of their pointless lives.

We lost a great man. :salute A man who wasnt afraid to stand for what he believed in. He'll always be a hero in my book for fighting to protect the 2'nd amendment. Chuck Heston understood that our right to bear arms is a fundemental pillar of freedom. Thats why our forefathers had the wisdom to write it.
-
i am very sorry to hear of his passing, he was a great man!!!!
now that he is gone, it wont be very long before the 2nd amendment is gone!
-
It amazes me to read some of the comments made, and the ones deleted for obvious reasons.
Mr Heston does not need my defense. But here it comes anyway. He was much more articulate in explaining his views with those he debated then those who he debated that opposed his views. Usually those debating him made tulips of themselves eventually by thowing insults and uninformed opinions and facts at light speed. During that Mr Heston kept his calm and composure and let his adverdaries self destruct. A wise man can guide the unintelligent to their own demise. He did that frequently in many debates in which he was involved.
Actors today are a joke....of course this is just my humble opinion. I miss Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Bogart and Tracy just to name a few.
Today seems all is required is a pretty face, with not much else behind it. I have no idea why actors such as Baldwin and Clooney amongst others feel their political views need to be made public? As actors they make money and have gained celebrity status but let's face it most of them won't be mistaken for members of a think tank. And how in the world do they feel they're more informed then the general public and more intelligent? My guess would be arogance.
Mr Heston was a great actor, a great patriot and a fair minded man. Can't really say that about any of todays so called actors. They're prone to jumping on Sofas while appearing on Oprah and threaten to leave the country when their choice for political office is defeated. Where's Gable and Stewart when ya need'em?
-

I looked at the post just above yours and flashed on....
Last picture I saw of Skuzzy he had a beard......
Reread what was above the picture...........
Reread Skuzzy post...........
OOOOOOOOHHHHH OWWWW
my sides hurt!
Got to say here IMHO Mr. Heston was one of the Greats.
I've enjoyed his movies and paid attention to his career and read his words and I have to say what many have already said. He was a man of honor that stood by his beliefs AND he IMHO had a sense of humor, poked fun at himself and several of his roles, and displayed it in several films.
Recall the one where that Croc Dundee guy meant God in a different film.....
It saddened me considerably when so many SEEMED to rejoice at his illness and said the things they said.
I even thought of those saying what they said as back bitting little dogs ankle bitting at someone that IMHO was so much MORE then they.
Not by his films but by his beliefs, they way he articulated them, and his willingness to stand by them no matter the cost.
AND he often stood and did these things BEFORE it became popular to do so! (his Marching with MLK)
-
can't say i agree with his views on some politics but a well spoken and good actor. <S> !
-
(Heston revealed in 2002 that he had symptoms consistent with Alzheimer's disease, saying, "I must reconcile courage and surrender in equal measure.")
It is truly a blessing that he has now finally past on. He has been bed-ridden and unable to speak for quite a long time. The family has not allowed anyone from the public to see him in recent years.
I remember well how Michael Moore ridiculed and made fun of Heston in his movie: "Bowling for Columbine" It was disgusting how utterly disrespectful of Heston Moore was in the film. It showed what a true gentleman Heston was, that he did not punch Moore in the face for all the insults he made.
Besides being an early marcher for civil rights in America ( he stood on the platform near Dr. Martin Luther King during his famous "I have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial ), he was also a Union President, having been elected head of the Screen Actors Guild six times. People who try to pigeon hole him as being some kind of loony one issue fanatic really don't know much about the real man, and what all of his life accomplishments were.
He was a real Renaissance man, and a true American.
.
-
I don't give a damn about the NRA one way or another, but Heston was a badass in "The Omega Man"
I saw that movie when I was about 8, and Heston's performance probably influeced my film and book interests more than any other single performance.
I can't say that I'll miss him, or anything like that, but I do sincerely have a ton of respect for what he gave me.

The man was in some great films - but your kidding yourselves if you think actors of his generation aren't playing the same roles the same way as stars currently on the screen now do...
A good actor and pretty good at what he did...anything outside film well that is debatable...
Tronsky
-
So are you saying that newer actors and the actors back then acted the same way infront of a camera? I think not. Huge difference.
-
No - I think if you look at the John Waynes, Robert Mitchums, Henry Fondas of the 50's and 60's - they played it pretty much like the Gene Hackmans, Clint Eastwoods of the 70's, and the Tom Cruises, Morgan Freeman of the 90's....they play it pretty much the same way - its themselves = same characterisation in differing roles...Heston was the same - it doesn't mean they're not entertaining - but hardly significant or groundbreaking like early Brando, DeNiro, Pacino or even Edward Norton etc...
I think modern actors actually do need to "act" (Brad Pitt can act btw) but theres still plenty around doing the same thing every film

My favorite. I don't have the 4 disk collector's edition. Even so, the special features on the single DVD version are outstanding. No one digs Ben Hur or that black and white movie where Heston and Orson Wells star?. Wells is a corrupt small town sheriff and Heston a Mexican DEA/Border agent.
-
nelson.. one of Hestons favorite films was "Will Penny" you really need to see that if you think that all he could do was "overact"
I would say the new breed of actors are the ones who overact.. they have anger fits over nothing and weep at the drop of a hat.
Heston carried himself with a dignity few modern actors can manage.
Those who think that they know his politics and don't agree.. here is a short speech by him.. probly more than you have ever heard of him except from some lefty making fun of him... it is a short read.
http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/charltonhestonculturalwar.htm
If you still don't agree with his politics then I would like to know why. perhaps it is because you see everything as a fuzzy, out of focus gray area and can't take a stand or tell right from wrong.
lazs
-
Well. right and wrong.
While disagreeing with Heston on some issues, I take my hat of for the character in the case of others, as well as looking at him as one of the great old ones.
(Jimmy Stewart being one, Gregory Peck, and on and on)
Sadly this thread has been hijacked .... now let it not be so ,so again, RIP Heston :salute
-
1. Enjoyed many of his movies.
2. The news said he went from left to right politically based on his support of civil rights in the 50's-60's and his 2nd amendment stance later on. I disagree. Civil rights and 2nd amendment rights are all part of the grand plan to promote individual freedom. This kind of activism is niether left nor right as far as I'm concerned, just necessary.
3. The walk of fame didn't "just" become cheap. I dare anyone to walk Hollywood blvd. and recognize over 60% of the names. Stars on the sidewalk have been a publicity attraction since their inception.

You've GOT to be kidding. Morgan Freeman is the only actor that comes to mind in comparison to the actors of the 50's and 60's.
I would like to see how badly Tom Cruise, George Clooney, or Brad Pitt would screw up a remake of Ben Hur. Oh thats right, thier last couple of movies have been bombs.

To add to this, the actors of that era HAD to get their lines right the first time, not many producers were patient enough to do more than 2 takes on ANY scene. You had to have a thick skin when it came to producers on the set. Today's mamby pamby spoiled offspring-of-the-60's actors/actresses would not have been able to hack a movie set/producers back in the 50/60's.

I think I'll go home and watch Ben-Hur-over, again, and again, and again.

If you want to gain a better idea of how diverse Heston's acting ability was....watch him in "A Man for All Seasons" which was a remake of an earlier movie starring Paul Scofield. Scofield really nailed the part of Sir Thomas More, but Heston did a fine job as well.
Heston also played the part of Mark Antony in a 1949 production of "Julius Caesar." I thought it was the finest performance for that role I have ever seen.
Another film that Heston considered one of his favorites was "War Lord." This is one of the better films in the genre of medieval history, where Heston plays a Norman war lord sent by the Duke of Ghent to control a coastal region troubled by Viking raiders. Although I thought Heston's performance was overshadowed by that of Guy Stockwell, it is nevertheless another good example of his ability to handle a complex character.

Karthoum with Olivier. Another keeper.
Tango, thanks for the title "A Touch of Evil" which aptly names the show. I count myself very lucky to have been old enough to view his films from the 50's. Yes I was still a kid, but old enough to realize what I was seeing was a story worth telling. Stories that highlight virtues. Vice is shown, and shown well. But not as some "oh, I guess this is what we've got to settle for," but to show how wrong "wrong" is.
Simple and true lessons.
P.S. Have to go back and review El Cid. Been to long for me to recall.
Thanks, Tango!

mt.. my views on civil rights have been up and down and can be considered from left to KKK to right. I first believed as Heston, that all men were created equal. I then became disgusted with the total abuse and whining and rioting the whole black power crap.
Now.. I am right wing again. I believe in equal rights.. not extra rights or rights based on reaching some outcome of equality of performance. I see exactly what Heston felt. I will fight to the death to see that everyone is equal under the law.. I will do all I can to see that no one is given extra rights tho based on race.

May he RIP.
Ditto <S> Mr. Heston, you'll be missed.
