Is it worth buying?
Also, what is this "Steam" they talk about having to install?
-
the game is fun. it has some cool tank fights but the other combat sucks
steam is a pain in the arnold

Steam is a program that acts as a medium for distribution, server finding, etc. It cuts out the most of the intermediates between developers and gamers..

I don't know about RO, most everyone I've heard says it's really good. Steam has been hit & miss for me. It lost the info on one of my old accounts, and there was no way to get it back.. They were probably just swamped with similar tech support requests and I must've fallen through the cracks. Some people have horror stories, others have never had any problem with it.
I only dislike it cause it seems to eat resources while on "standby" in the tray, but never really did the math. It doesn't seem to leave anything behind when you tell it to uninstall, so I'd say your best bet is to give it a try.
Someone with more experience will comment, but that's my data point for you.
E.G. of a PITA situation:
Payment issues
Due to Steam products' ephemeral nature and Steam's resultant susceptibility to fraud, billing details entered must match exactly with those held by the bank.[62] Similarly, certain types of failed transactions (such as chargebacks) will cause the user’s Steam account to be disabled until audited by support staff.

hes got it backward

Yup. The tank stuff is makes things interesting, but the infantry combat is great.
There are three mods out or coming soon for RO, including a Normandy one.

Its great fun and steam has always been good for me.

Love it & highly recommend it. One of the very best WWII FPSs out there. These are my screenshots(unmodified) right from the game.

I think TxDad plays that ~ and enjoys it.
-
I'm not sure if my computer is fast enough.
-
I guess my biggest question is about STEAM then...
having to have that seems to make me worry a bit. Is it hard to disable?
-
Oh, I think that the STEAM is why TxDad removed Red Orchestra from his computer.
It has quirks... like it changes the resolution of all your functions so it's enormous, blurry & unreadable.
He says it's still workable, and he enjoyed the game very much... but hated the STEAM.

RO's great - I play in the australian based [3rd] team and we do hang out on american servers from time to time (we're always looking for a game if theres a team/clan out there willing)
but the infantry combats excellent...the tanking has its moments - but some of the maps are awesome especially if the server has the MG mutator on...there is a new normandy based mod coming which looks good if it can deliver on its promises...
I've never had a problem with steam...so thats not an issue to me

Ive never had any issues with steam myself, but i have read that some do.
-
Never had one problem with Steam. I use them for RO, CoD4 & Counterstrike.
-
I use steam for doing most of my vegetables, never given me any issues unless I'm careless taking the lid off.
-
I've never had any issues with Steam (in fact, I love being able to pay for and download games, and never having to worry about CD protection, or needing to put a CD in the drive to play a game), and I used to play a lot of Red Orchestra. For WW2 infantry gaming, I'd say it's the best out there. No crosshairs, only iron sights. No bunny hopping. No ridiculous amounts of life, no health meter... if you get shot, you'll probably die. On their forums, the devs seem pretty dedicated to historical accuracy.
Give it a shot.

Is there a way to set it up so Steam only runs when I want to play RO, or is it one of those always there programs sitting there eating resources in the tray?
-
I'm pretty sure I used to do that, right click on the tray and tell it to exit. You could see if it's still running with task manager.
-
I think there is an option that makes Steam not load up on Windows start automatically. There is also likely a way to have it close automatically when you're finished playing RO, but it's probably simpler to just right-click the Steam icon in the taskbar and hit Exit when you're done.
-
I have about 30 games though Steam and haven't had any problems. Even transfered my account to another computer.
-
Just a word of caution - other than none-official add-ons, RO will not be getting updates. But it is still a good, fun game.
