Title: Flight control rack
Post by: jimson on April 07, 2008, 05:21:42 PM
I get wife ack for having this game on her PC, there is no room for me to have my own computer desk in this house, and you know if anything ever goes wrong with her pc it'll be "because of my game."

So I reposessed my borrowed PC put 2 gigs of ram, a cheap vid card and hooked it up with a KVM switch.
Now I see more ack on the horizon for my controllers being in the way, so at the risk of more ack for wasting time and money on anything that isn't important to her, I fashioned a solution.
With some scrap thin plywood and $20 worth pf pvc and screws I am embarrassed to introduce.................... .

THE UBERNERD FLIGHT CONTROL RACK  (patent not pending)

No more ineffective suction cups, no more steadying a joystick base between your knees.

FEATURES:
Fold down rudder pedal tray.
Velcro mounted powered USB port for one plug connection.
Lightweight portability, easily stowed in corner so as not to interfere with her important Ebay exploits.

Designed for the family man to keep the peace at home, at least until he can locate his missing pair of fuselage pylons lost to numerous flak bursts over the years.

Now, if only I could stop tinkering with hardware, I might be able to fly a few sorties.

Tell your wife to turn down the ack! If she doesn't you could always build one like <THIS> (http://airmafia.com/mafia/md_simpit/index.htm)  :t

Nice job on your rig !!  :aok

Looks pretty good.  You should draw up some plans so others can use it to build their own or start your own little cottege industry.

lol very nice.  If that's going to stay, you might think of running the wires through the piping to ease some of the cluttering, and of course to make it look prettier :D.

Why didn't you just use PVC glue instead of screws??  It would make for a much cleaner looking set up, or did you use screws so you could disassemble it??  My wife would have a fit if I brought something like that in the house.  :lol

Well lessee...
It's kind of a one off model, no plans to build anymore.
I used screws instead of PVC cement just to facilitate fitting and modification, once satisfied I could glue it, just haven't bothered.
As far as running the wire through the tubes, I might do that but this is the beta test model possibly subject to more mods and refinement. The beer holder might make it into the design.
Maybe it should be painted gray or OD.
At present, it lacks duct tape but it's only a matter of time.
I dont think plans would be necessary as anyone could build something similar from the photos. the only thing not straight forward are the pivot hinges for the rudder pedal tray, all I did there was file out the T-fittings so they would slip over the tube.

As far as the wife, she hasn't even seen it yet, I can only fly without interruption when she's not around anyway so the rest of the time it's stored in my shed.

Next time she pisses me off I'm gonna leave it in front of her desk though.

Thanks Jackel for getting the photos up, I couldn't figure that out.

If there really is someone else who would actually like to build this monstrosity and has questions feel free to shoot me a message or something.

Jim

Very Nice.  Camo Paint will make it Complete. :aok

I can see some company putting out a kit. I would buy it.

BTW. My wife of 26 years would just shrug her shoulders and laugh at the things I have come up with over the years. She knows how to not sweat the small stuff.

No, but since I don't have my own desk, this way I can have them mounted steady and still be portable, moved out of the way as one unit. Plus I think they are at a more comfortable, realistic position than suction cupped to a desk, and since I use a powered hub, I'm ready to go with one usb plug and one power plug.

i solved the wife ack thing by building her an officer of her own. GET THE HELL OUT OF MINE AND STOP MOVING MY CONTROLERS. hehehehehe. next project sound proof officer so i dont have to listen to her yell at the kids. then its add a bathroom in the new sound proof office. slowly i will have it to where i dont even have to see her unless its to spend time with the kids or eat dinner.

i truly hope you are messing around when you say these things if not, i feel bad for you that is no way to spend life, your wife should be the closest person to you!!
the one you can tell anything to, the one that will understand all your little idiosyncrasies, and not judge you for them!!
there should be only one you place above your wife and that is GOD.
because without him she would not be there.
i wish you the best!!

Paul, I think we all kid and exaggerate a little, but go ahead and feel bad for us. I only wish I had the kind of marriage you describe, and if you do....
God bless you, for you are a lucky man indeed.

Jim

my marriage is not perfect(not perfect cuz im a D@#K), but after 15 years, still going strong, i would die with out her. i am very blessed, the sad part is i forget how blessed i am, alot of times life goes by and i forget that my wife has stuck by me even when i was less than nice to her(<-------understatement), its only because God has given me such a forgiving lady, one that would die for me,and has fought to keep us together when i was going to give up.
im sorry if i offended you i truly did not mean to, i wish for every good person to have what i have, but in this world people have turned there back on God, or just outright dont believe. and i know its only because of our creator i have what i have.

ill right ill stop hijacking this thread.

Proof that any problem can be resolved with the judicious use of duct tape.

The ONLY way to make this set up better would be to use multi-colored duct tape.

There is still a lot too do to it, and I will likely change a few things, but at least I am making progress.

I actually prefere the side stick control like the modern fighterjets use.

No  :frown: About half way through I though...Ya know, I should have wrote all of this down!  :huh

It wasn't that tough, and believe it or not, it went pretty much in one shot from start to finish with very few changes.

LOL, I'm jealous(sp) I made a test rig out of pvc pipe, measured it, tested it a little, made changes, tested it, measured it, so on and so forth. That took three months. Now I'm using steel tubing and it is going a little faster than the pvc one, (because of all the testing and measureing) but I still have a couple of months on this one and it is still no where near done, I will say this I can break mine down and carry it in my car if I have to, although I haven't. I use my truck instead, steel tubing is kinda dirty you know. ;) When I'm done I will clean it all up, and I'm considering having it LineX, if that's too costly I'll just spray bomb it.

Hats off to you gents on your setups.Very  ingenious I must say.I will now tell you all how I have my setup deployed, and no pictures because it's easy to see in your mind as I explain my style, are lack thereof!I  must have my joystick in the middle,so I grabbed a wooden bread board, and I have my Fighterstick on the right side, and throttle on the left.My pedals are under my puter desk, and thats it.I use my keyboard tray to set the breadboard on.Been flying this way since Confirmed Kill.Whatever works, and yes I know I won't win any awards for creativity!

IronDog I use to fly with my MS sidewinder pro in my lap no seperate throttle, or rudder peds. Flew like that for several years then I modified a desk after I got my CH setup flew with that for several years, but was never really comfortable. There was always a compromise in either seating position, or control position, and as I get older I am finding it harder to fly for very long. Yes I'm getting to be an old fart.

I finaly decided to bite the bullet and build something just for flight simming shortly after I quite smoking. I needed something to keep me busy and had just finished my truck so here I am.
