Title: Spit14 drop tank
Post by: Noir on April 08, 2008, 04:32:44 AM
I'd like to see the spit14 being able to carry larger drop tanks like spits were actually able to, and thus having an advantage over non perked spits (at least one please !). Another reason is that the spit14 is a beast over 20K, and climbing up there is not an options with the current fuel loadout.

I 2nd that, upon reaching 15K from take-off at a 0.0 base a Spit14 drop tank is usually half or more gone.

I generally don't have range problems in the spit14. It's way better than the 5/9/16.

While it may use up the DT climbing to 20k, that means you still have full internal fuel up at 20k, and you're able to cruise at high speeds with very low fuel consumption. You can reduce RPM like mad!

I usually fly it for its range.

I wouldn't complain if the large-size DT were on, but I don't think it's a major failing point for this plane.

I say yes.
The added weight and drag from the shackles alone is worth it to me.
Not to mention the weight/drag of the Dt.

weee.  ;)

But hey, at higher alt the drag is less due to thin-er air.

I don't talk about major failure, just a bonus for the perk ride. With that DT we could do some real patroling like in a 190 for exemple, it would give the plane a role. I think the large DT is the same model than US rides, I need to check this out.

The drag/weight added isn't an issue to me, no need to fight with DT on except if you have a huge E advantage wich is likely to happen in spit14 )

If you were smart you'd just take a 152 with 100% and no DT  ;)

That gives you at least 40 mins at full throttle... much more if you decrease RPMs at your target alt.

Standard procedures with the XIV was to carry a 30 gallon slipper tank.  I don't recall seeing an XIV on Ops with a 90 gallon tank.  There were IXs flying bomber escorts for the daylight RAF buffs in the late summer and fall of 44 that carried that tank, but the XIVs ended up on the continent so it wasn't something they did that I can find anyway.

We'd be better served with having the 30 gallon slipper tank be avaiable for the Spit Vb we have.

That's what I use actually, but the spit14 is so.....a spit with a big engine !!! Like a hotrod thats barely under your control, with a crazy climbrate  :rock

Too bad, The info I've read was purely technical I guess.
