Title: Enola Gay Autographed Bombardier Position Photo
Post by: Halo on April 08, 2008, 05:49:39 PM
I'm a huge fan of airpower and regard it as essential for American and allies security, and I believe dropping the two atomic bombs was necessary to end WWII as effectively as possible, but I have to wonder about the appropriateness of an autographed Enola Gay bombardier position photo on sale by Acorn.

Enola Gay Photograph Signed by Navigator Theodore "Dutch" Van Kirk

When the Enola Gay left Tinian Island for Hiroshima, carrying the atomic bomb, Theodore "Dutch" Van Kirk was the navigator, responsible for keeping the plane on course. Historic black-and-white print features the glass-covered nose and the bombadier's position. Hand-signed by Van Kirk, matted and framed in wood under Plexiglas®. 14" x 12". Includes a certificate of authenticity.

It could be worth something on down the line to some war memorabilia collector.  I wouldn't be interested, but I wouldn't necessarily ascribe evil qualities to someone who might buy it.  I could envision a Japanese speculator buying that.  It does seem to trivialize the whole thing though.  Kind of like the satin lithographed pillows of 911, although there is magnitudes of difference btw the two.

I'd buy it and donate it to a museum of aviation history.
