Title: Going to offline practice crashes game
Post by: Blammo on April 08, 2008, 06:46:59 PM
Just downloaded and installed the latest patch.  Going online appears to work (although I haven't actually flown yet).  However, if I try to go to offline practice, it preloads all of the textures and right as it should be entering the arena, it crashes to a white screen.

I ran a scandisk, moved the sounds folder out of the Aces High 2 directory and deleted the cache.  It still crashes when going into offline practice.

Before the patch there was no behavior like this and no other change to my system other than installing this patch.  Again, the crash only appears to happen when trying to go into offline practice.

General Spec:

Intel EQ6700 Core2 Quad processor
nVidia GTS 8800 SSC with 640 MB RAM
2 GB RAM
Windows XP SP2

Offline crashes for me with patch 3.  I haven't gone online yet, don't feel ready yet.

Dell 1501 with AMD TL60, 2GB Ram,  XP SP2.

Deleted 2.12.2
Reloaded 2.11.3 from CD, downloaded patch for 2.11.3 to 2.12.3 to mydocs with Avast disabled.  Applied patch and still crashes when going to offline.

Will delete again and try downloading 2.12.3 complete.  If that fails I'll stick to 2.11.3 offline until I get new hardware.

Likewise... consistent CTD when entering Offline (the last message is "Terrain Complete") after installing patch 3.  Online is fine.

Installed patch in-game.  Vista.   Tried a couple of terrains - appears to make no difference.

Just flew for several hours online.  No crashes.  Like the other reports it appears to be related to offline.

Downloaded the complete 2.12.3 but it refuses to run/install, not a valid Win32.app.  :(

Redid download, install ran ok.  Offline practice still crashes as a white-screen.  A DxDiag is here http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,232456.0.html

Same symptoms as first post, game crash after textures load for offline play. Tried uninstalling then full patch with same crash issue.

Same here. Tried several different terrains (including ones currently up online), but crashed each time after texture loading. Online arenas are working fine.

Which terrain(s) are being loaded? (Go to 'Select Terrain' off the main menu and note the highlighted terrain name.)

Is it a crash or a hang?

I've been working offline and it gets to the end of the preloading and "freezes" for 20-30 seconds and then goes into the tower. If your patient it might work.

BTW I've loaded the TA, BOB, NDISLES, and MIDWAY just fine, except for the 20-30 second delay.

Whatever the standard default is since I've never changed it.

It crashes out to a white screen on the desktop.

I'm having the same problem when I try and go offline.

For me, the game just froze whilst trying to load the offline things (terrains, I think).

Offline:
Mine doesn't crash, but it freezes at Terrain Complete, and finally loads about 10 minutes later...(ndisles). When in offline I switched from A1 to P21 it took about 3 minutes, P21 tower to P21 hanger, 2 minutes...it is sooooooooooooooooo slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

I get a crash to desktop while loading Offline Practice (or trying to host LAN 8-player) with every terrain I have (I've checked all of them):

beta2
compello
coralsea
festerma
frac3
midway1
mmesa
montis
ndisles
smpizza

Don't know if it's useful, but here's the crash info from the Vista crash dialog:

Same here.  Aces High blah blah has encountered a problem blah blah.

Really frustrating, since I a trying to tidy up a skin for submission.  I don't like rebuilding cache every time I use skin viewer.

Please help.

I had same problem till I removed the check for skins preload.  Skins preload is crashing Offline.  Try it without Skin preload in video settings just before u click offline.

I have the option unchecked(though I couldn't check it if I wanted to for some reason) and it still crashes.

Interesting.  I just tried this and it worked for me.  I can get into the Offline mode now.  Strange the problem does not happen in Online.

Even with textures not preloading, I can't get into offline play. The last thing I see in that case  is "Terrain Complete", then a brief pause and: "Aces High has encountered..."

Likewise, preload textures has always been disabled for me (something to do with the video card capabilities perhaps? - GeForce 8400M GS in a Dell laptop) and I am still getting consistent crash to desktop after the terrain load when entering Offline.

Try changing resolution.  I remember I was able to go in 1 time before i figured out it was something with the skins preload on my machine.

Appreciate the suggestion, but no dice.  Tried every resolution available - crash every time.  I also tried, one by one, turning off Hardware Vertex Processing, changing the Max Frame Rate, and dropping the Max Texture Size to 512 (which caused a rebuild of the plane cache and the terrain cache).  Still a crash to desktop every time for me, I'm afraid.

The only remotely relevant thing I changed between being able to play offline and not was the installation of patch 3.  I've never been able to play offline since the patch.

I have same problem with my XP desktop which has always played the game well before patch 3. (with exception of a little fr drop since 2.12 release).

At the same time I have no problem with my vista laptop in offline. (weird because I have alot of problems trying to play online with this laptop.

Lagger87 & Bigjohnv (Squaddies) have had the program crash.

I believe they have sent e-mails to the powers that be (HTC) and have received no reply.

I have had no problems myself.

not sure if anyone mentioned this yet or not but

Mine always crashes when it is trying to load the terrain. Almost like the offline can't find the file for terrains. Online works fine though and like I said before my this only happens on the XP desktop. My Vista laptop plays offline very well. Don't know if it is specific to OS or not.

edit: new info this might be a memory issue or something causing it to be

here are some screenshots from after I get in. the first is from offline (which I got working after running fsautostart and stopping alot of programs and services). The second is after getting in one of the online arenas. I found this weird because my Vista laptop is just the opposite memory usage and fr are worse when in online than in offline.

I'm afraid I haven't had the patience to let AH run that long after it's stopped responding, but I'm running Windows XP Home Edition SP2.  I invariably wind up hitting the power button of my PC, as task manager won't open, I'm not able to switch windows, open the start menu, switch users etc...  However, the mouse will move around (certain) areas of the screen, depending on how many times I press "ALT + TAB" - so I think it actually is switching windows, but isn't showing me anything.

At a guess, I'd say that this is graphics related.  FYI I'm using an NVidia Geforce FX 5200, a Pentium 4, and I have 512MB of RAM.

Can't be the graphics.  I have had that problem since day one & have had several Nvidia Graphics cards since then.

I have had:

7100 GS

7600 GS

8600 GTS

& now I have the mother of all Nvidia graphics cards, the 9800 GX2

And still have had that happen to me.

Greetings,

I must say I am having the same problem.  I down loaded the FSO practice missions and attempted to practice - CTD.  So, I thought, well I must have saved a file in the wrong place.  Found the files, deleted, nada.  Changed terrain.  nada.  powered down. nada.  Deleted all my saved mission files (I know where to find them again!) nada.  Down loaded the new patch to the mission editor (Okay, so they could have been related).  nada.

I was hoping to show off this game to a family member who is to, shall we say, shy to fly online.  I hope this is not me or my machine, but would like to be able to fly off line again.

Regards,

Greetings,

I can play in the offline practice mode.  On the opening clip board prior to selecting offline practice, I opened the video settings and unchecked preload of both textures and skins.  The game appears to be working normally now.

Can someone tell me if you can setup your joystick when you go to the online arenas? I'm trying to setup my game again and I can't get to the offline practice area to setup my joystick. I don't want to pay for a subscription, and then not be able to play!

Thanks!

When I get this problem, the windows "has encountered a problem...." dialog box comes up, offering to send an incident report to Evil Empire Central. The contents of the report are in a txt file in a temp directory, but unfortunately it deletes as soon as the dialog box closes. I can view the contents inside a window of the dialog box, but I cannot select/copy/paste. It appears to show a long list of memory addresses and contents.

1. Would this data be helpful to HTC?
2. Does anyone know how to capture the data and send it somewhere other than E.E.C.?
3. Would HTC like to have those of us with the problem post or send DxDiag output files, to see if there's a common thread involved?

Any input from HTC would be appreciated.
