Interesting...i read that several of these saw action in Malta. Don't know much more.... :eek:

Be sure, but not flown by the Germans. ;)
The one in the pic was an experiment to see what the performance was with a DB engine.

And it flew...very well.
There were DB powered Hurricanes as well, I think they flew with the Yugoslavians....

would be interesting to see any data on how it performed with the DB engine compared to the merlin or whatever

If my memory serves me it outperformed a standard 109 at the time. It may have been stripped to be lighter though. The test pilot was quite impressed with it, especially the climbing.

Some time since I don't read about that particular plane, but I recall reading that the cooling surfaces in the spit weren't enough to properly refrigerate the DB, and the plane had serious overheating problems. Other than that test pilots said the plane had a very nice handling with the DB engine, had a very high ceiling and superb climbrate.
