Took the boys and one of their friends down to the Museum of Flight for lunch, focused primarily on WW1 aircraft(pictures near the end, I have a thing for aircraft noses....)
Quiz photo directly below:(Not a WW1 engine ;) )What engine is this picture of?

Looks like a jet engine.....possibly a Jumo?

Hmmm...Concord? Just guessing that since the engine is currently on display at the museum.

I would guess a jet, beyond that, no idea.
Whatever it is ... look at all those lines and hoses running all over the place. I don't think I'd like to work on that.

Bronco squid got it! :aok It's a J-58 for the A-12 (SR-71) displayed at the museum. 9-stage, axial flow, single spool Turbine: two-stage axial flow, thrust:= 32,500 lbs. with afterburner. Weight: approx. 6,000 lbs. Max. operating altitude: above 80,000 ft.

Yes, we went from the Curtiss OX-5 engine of 90 hp (pictured below) to the J-58 in some 47 years time. :O

Whats quite amazing to me is the inlet mechanism that keeps the compressor from stalling.
That or the fact this bird is nearly a half a decade old. Imagine what we could build (or have already) with todays technology. Its hard to think we havent improved on a the SR-71.

I think the threat of Communism and the nationalism we had "back then" was strong. The R&D costs were cheaper by comparison. Today, we have corporate exec's who were raised by the Peace, Love and Dope generation who think of nothing but their stock prices, so the R&D costs and production costs for anything out of the ordinary are atrocious. That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it. :)

There's a simple answer, besides what Rip said. There was only ONE Clarence "Kelly" Johnson.
-
Johnsons management style was top notch in my opinion. His way of doing things has gone by the wayside I am afraid.
Something wasnt right he brought his engineers a hundred feet down the hall and fixed it right at the plane.

Nice collection of WWI aircraft there!
-
Actually, there is a problem with the actual top speed, which is heat from friction.
And if you want actal photographs from WWI aircraft BTW, I'll email some of my own, free for distribution, for anyone that can host and post.
(And I do have some nice ones. RIP?)

wish they would pop for a few more light bulbs in the WW1 and WW2 sections. Too dark in there for good pics.
-
Very nice, the ww1 fighter pictures will come in handy for a project I'll be working on this year. I'm assuming the aircraft paint jobs are historically accurate?
I'll be doing some 3D modeling of some of those ww1 fighters, so the detailed close up images are nice. Will bookmark your site.

Watch it ... you're talking about Dubya peers and pals, there. ;)

the Peace, Love and Dope generation who think of nothing but their stock prices,
Yea, those dam hippies were all about the profit margin.

Actually, The "Dr. Spock" kids were taught by their hippy parents to think only about themselves, screw everyone else, "if it feels good, do it" and forget about your country, its evil since we bring war. Translation is a generation that thinks only about themselves. Glad we agree on something. :aok

Perhaps, but the Democrats are no saints in this regard either.
