Title: Colt Officers model question.
Post by: Maverick on April 10, 2008, 10:43:56 PM
I have a question regarding the officers model gun. I know that there was a weakness in the recoil spring cap retention design. I had been told some time ago that there was a modification to take care of that weak tab on the cap. Does anyone know what the modification was? I've been curious about it since hearing about the issue a while back.

I don't recall, but I hated mine.  I must have gotten a hold of the worse one that came out of the factory.

Mav, try these....

AO-Hell Link to someone's journal about the recoil spring plug (http://journals.aol.com/johnstranahanb/RebarrelingandHome-ShopMachining/entries/2004/04/15/colt-officers-acp-recoil-spring-guide-kit/208)
Reinforced spring plugs from D&L (http://www.dlsports.com/reinforced_spring_plugs_for_compact_1911s.html)
Firing Line Forum regarding this very problem (http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2760157) and a suggestion regarding the Ed Brown Reverse Plug mod.
Clark's Reverse Plug is mentioned here (http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=106584) along with the problem of launching both the plug and spring downrange.
Clark's Custom Guns (http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/clk1911pts.htm#guiderod) price list for the reverse plug mentioned in the previous post.

It's amazing what Google can find in two minutes. :D

Check the AO-Hell Journal entry. He talks about how and why it happened (to him) and has a few photos regarding the fix.

This guy (http://www.cylinder-slide.com/officerspara.shtml) does too, roughly half-way down the page. Typos and spelling errors galore, though.
url=http://www.mit.edu/~boojum/Oath/PC/Jim/Papers/smallarms.html]Problem #3[/url] he states the bushing shattering on his Combat Commander and sending his recoil spring and plug downrange. Also mentioned is the Officer's Model, as well as fixes for it.

From everything I've read, the sole way to fix this problem is to install a reverse plug. Unfortunately, it also requires a trip to a gunsmith or a lathe to cut a ring in the slide's dustcover. I haven't found anything regarding a way to reinforce the lock tab on the recoil spring plug. You might want to try asking on 1911 forums.
