What kind of round can land in a bed and not explode?

According to the local news, it was a piece of metal..not a round. They were testing 120mm tank rounds that day.
Luckily the kid was invited to a sleepover so she was not in her bed when the object came through the ceiling.
On a side note, I've lived near Piccatiny since 1966 and this is the first time I've ever heard of something like this
happening.

An inert one.
If they were testing a 120 mm it might have been a sabot round but the description in the article was more like the penetrator used in a 105mm tank sabot round.

I recall in the mid 80s some NG unit overbagged a howitzer and put a crater in the local expressway. I can't remember which one.
And, at some point before my time (1984) someone overshot a range at Ft. McCoy Wisc. and killed someone.

1989 a Marine artillery unit training at Ft Sill overloaded a round in a M105 towed howitzer. Shot the round 3 miles over the impact zone and it landed in the middle of a squad of basic training recruits going through the night infiltration course. 3 were killed and almost a dozen wounded. This class of recruits were one week behind my class going through training and my best friend in high school was part of that unit that got hit. He and his squad had just gotten off the range. 5 minutes earlier and John might have been in the middle of it. As it was he helped treat and carry the wounded to the ambulances when they arrived. Was a pretty bad deal.

They were detonating a round and part of it went something like 2 miles beyond what it should have.
